Texas State representative,
was charged with making
a special tribute to the late
McElroy, during the Presidents Day event.
We want to honor this
incredible woman for what
she did for Gonzales, this
county, the state and lets
face it the country, Green
said. She refused to go along
with the decay of our country. The best way to honor
her is to ask ourselves, What
are we going to do with this
legacy she left?.

A Yoakum man shot and killed his father Saturday night, but Yoakum Police
Department released him from custody,
within hours, on grounds of self-defense,
early Sunday.
Christopher Waligura, the 21-year-old
shooter, was at the Waligura family home
on Baldwin Street, in Yoakum, when he
shot his father, 46-year-old Darrell Wali-

gura, four times.

Police officers responded to the home at
approximately 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
Early reports from Karl Van Slooten,
Yoakum Police Chief, were that police arrived at the scene and found Waliguras
body was in the front yard, with multiple

New publisher named at Cannon

The Gonzales Cannon
recently
obtained
the
services of Michael S.
McCracken as its new
publisher.
McCracken, a third
generation newspaperman,
stepped in and helped the
staff at The Cannon after the
passing of former publisher
Dave Mundy back on Jan. 15.
The job was just temporary,
but McCracken, current staff
and management decided
it was a good fit for him to
remain on as the publisher.
I was born with
newspaper ink in my blood
and its just what I know how
to do, McCracken said. I
stepped down as managing
editor in Yoakum at the end
of the year to try some other
things, but that didnt even
last a month.

Michael S. McCracken
McCracken, who held
the sports editors seat at
The Gonzales Inquirer
from 1999 to 2005, served
as the managing editor at
The Yoakum Herald-Times
for the past seven years.
Prior to that, he worked
as managing editor for the
Madisonville Meteor and
Calallen Record as well as

held the sports editor tag at

the Jackson County HeraldTribune in Edna for about
five years..
Following a tour of duty
in the United States Marine
Corps after graduating from
Daingerfield High School in
1990, McCracken began his
newspaper career as a sports
writer/photographer for the
Four Star Reporter back in
1993 before heading to Edna
to work for his grandfather,
Bert West, who was the
publisher at the Jackson
County Herald-Tribune.
I owe a lot to my
grandfather, who taught me
this business, McCracken
said. It was hard on me
when he passed away a
couple years ago, but like he
used to always tell me, The

The Gonzales Independent School District will

be acquiring a new truck
shortly as the school board
of trustees voted to approve
purchase of a 2015 Chevy
Silverado for the districts
Maintenance Director during the regular meeting
Monday evening.
A few months ago, the
board approved getting a
new vehicle for the district,
GISD Deputy Superintendent Larry Wehde said. I
pointed out that several of
the maintenance vehicles
had around 100,000 miles
or more. Some of those vehicles were repaired but I

am now short.
He said it was a common
practice to provide a fairly
new vehicle for the maintenance director.
The district had two others choices besides the Silverado a Dodge Ram and
a Ford.
One of the reasons the
Silverado was recommended was because of its efficient V6 engine.
In other action, the
board:
Approved moving
Marchs regular meeting
from the 16th to the 9th due
to spring-break vacation.
Approved the minutes of the Jan. 12 regular
