SIEVE ANALYSTS

Aim: To determine the grain size distribution of a given soii sample.

Materials and EquiPments:
1. Balances accurate to 1 gm and 0'1 gm'
2. Set of IS sieves (4.75 im,2.8 mm-, 2 mm,1 mm, 600 micron , 425 micton, 300 micron'
150 micron, 75 micron) with lid and pan'
3. Motorised sieve shaker.
4. Dry soil samPle'
5. S. Two traYs.

Procedure:
Take 1000 gm of air-dried soil sample'
2. Stack the sieves in a descending oider of aperture sizes (i.e. 4.7 5 mm at the top and 75
micron at the bottom) followed by a pan'
3. Put the soil sample on the 4.75 mm sieve and cover it with a lid.
4. place the set of sieves on a sieve shaker and then clamp the set of sieves with the help of
the upper bolt of the sieve shaker'
will keep the
5. Adjust the automatic time controller of the shaker
rnuihir. shaking continuously for 10 minutes before s

7. Weigh the soil retained on each sieve separately'

g. Make a semi-logarithmic plot, with percint finer as ordinate in ordinary scale and particle
size as abscissa in logarithmic scale'
