Derive a formula in finding the area of a parallelogram

Study and Learn

Belle cut a piece of cardboard in a shape of a parallelogram. She was


asked to find its area. She did not know how so she asked the help of her
older sister, Becky. This was Beckys explanation and illustration:

a. Look at the parallelogram below. If you draw a perpendicular


segment from one vertex to the opposite side what figures are
formed?
right triangle
and trapezoid

b. If you cut along the perpendicular segment and rearrange the two
figures as shown, what new figure is formed?
rectangle

c. How many units long are the base, length (b) and the height (h) of
the original parallelogram?
b = 12
h=6

d. What is the length and width of the rectangle?


length = 12
width = 6

e. How are base (b) and height (h) related to the length and width of
the rectangle that was formed?
b=l
h=w
By merely counting the square units, youll know that the area of the
rectangle is 72 square units.
We just put the right triangle taken from the parallelogram at the left
side which turned the figure into a rectangle. We did not subtract
anything from the parallelogram.
If the rectangle has an area of 72 square units, then what is the area of
the parallelogram?
The parallelogram and rectangle occupy the same amount of space.
The area is 72 square units.
f. The formula for the area of a parallelogram is the same as the
formula for the area of a rectangle.
Area of Parallelogram = b x h
12 x 6 = 72 sq. units
g. Let us find the area of the parallelogram using the formula.
A = bh
= 20 x 10
= 200
