The production of this Teacher Support Material (TSM) has been made possible with the
assistance of the PA-PROBE RLMC VII Staff.

2.

Allow students 10-15 min to do the worksheet.

3.

Have peer checking of answers.

4.

Discuss answers with the class.

Angles of a Triangle

Teaching Hints
Activities should be presented in order (i.e. Activity 1 followed
by Activity 2 then Activity 3). Activity Card 1 will be done in
one session (40 minutes) and Activity Card 2 in the next
session. Activity Card No. 3 follows (another 40 minutes).
Encourage students to come up with a generalization.
The strategies are only suggestive. It is the teachers discretion
to decide the methodology to use for the effectiveness of the
teaching -learning process.

Evaluation
a.

b.

Ask students:
What generalization can you make regarding the sum
of the measures of the angles of a triangle?
Is this true for all triangles?
Students accomplish satisfactorily the worksheet.

Resource List
1 Booklet (for Teachers Use)
5 pcs. Activity Card 1
5 pcs. Activity Card 2
5 pcs. Activity Card 3
10 pcs. Protractor
10 pairs of Scissors (To be brought by the students)
1 laminated copy of the Worksheet (reproduce the
worksheets depending on the number of students in the class)

For Activity Card 3

Suggested Strategy: HOT POTATO
1.

Use the same groupings.

2.

Distribute Activity Card 3 and its illustrations. Also

provide the group with a protractor. The group
should assign somebody to act as a moderator. Time
allotment is 30 minutes only.

3.

In answering the activity, let one student measure one

angle and when you (teacher) say HOT POTATO
the next student measures another angle and again
say HOT POTATO then another student measures
another angle and so on. This goes on until all the
angles are measured. After measuring each angle, the
student who measured the said angle records it in the
table (also to be passed around). The activity card is
again passed around for the members of the group to
find the sum of the measures of the angles of each
triangle. Encourage the members to review answers.

4.

Let the group brainstorm on the answers to the

questions given.

5.

Allow the reporter to present generalizations to the

class.

6.

Discuss. Make sure to come up with a valid general

statement based from the activities done.

For the Worksheet (done individually)

1.

Since this worksheet serves as an application of the

concept being developed in the preceding activities,
provide each student a copy of the worksheet.
3

Preparation
Students should have the skill in using the protractor to measure
angles.
Let students bring their protractors and pairs of scissors
(protractors and pairs of scissors provided might not be
enough) before doing the activities.

Suggested Strategy: SMALL GROUP BRAINSTORMING
1.

Divide the class into five heterogeneous groups.

2.

Distribute Activity Card No. 2 and let students get

their pairs of scissors. Each student must have one
triangle to cut and connect. Time allotment is 20 minutes
only.

3.

Let the group brainstorm on the findings of each

member based on the questions asked.

4.

Ask the groups to present their findings to the class.

Users Guide
Description
This Teacher Support Material (TSM) provides students
opportunity to cooperatively investigate the sum of the angles
of a triangle. Cooperative learning strategies such as Think,
Pair , Share (TPS), Hot Potato and Small Group Brainstorming
are employed in the performance of the given activities.
This material consists of three activity cards and a worksheet
which serves as an evaluation.

Target Audience
First Year (SEDP)
Third Year (RBEC)

Subject Matter/Learning Competency

Demonstrate understanding of certain properties of figures
arrived at investigative procedures, among them the sum of
the angles of a triangle.

Duration
1 hour & 35 minutes

Objectives
Students will:
measure angles using a protractor
investigate the sum of the measures of the angles of a
triangle
make a general statement involving the sum of the
measures of the angles of a triangle
find the measure of the missing angle of a triangle

ACTIVITY CARD 1

DRAW & MEASURE

Materials
A copy of Activity Card 1
One intermediate/bond paper

Protractor
Ruler/any straight edge

Instructions
1.

Get a copy of Activity Card 1and a protractor from the teacher.

Then prepare one whole sheet of clean intermediate/bond paper,
and a ruler or any straight edge.

2.

Find a partner.

3.

Draw a triangle of your own.

4.

Exchange your triangle with your partners triangle.

5.

Measure the three angles of the triangle.

6.

Add all measures of the three angles of the triangle.

7.

Return your partners triangle and also get your triangle.

8.

Check the accuracy of the measures of the angles as well as the

sum.

9.

Share ideas with the other pairs (particularly on using the protractor
to measure the angles precisely).

Materials
One copy of Activity Card 2
A copy of the illustrations for Activity Card 2
A pair of Scissors

Instructions
1.

Select one member of your group to act as a leader.

2.

The leader gets a copy of Activity Card 2 and a copy of the

illustrations for Activity Card 2 from the teacher. Let each
member of the group prepare his/her pair of scissors.

3.

The illustrations will be passed around by the leader requesting

each member to do the following:
Cut a triangle from the illustrations. Then along broken
lines cut the angles of the triangle.
Connect the three angles you have cut.
Show the angle you have formed to your group.

4.

Brainstorm on the following:

What kind of angle is formed when A, B, & C were
connected? when D, E & F were connected? when G,
H & I were connected? when J, K & L were
connected? when M, N & O were connected?
What do you think is the measure of the angles formed? Do
they have the same measures?

5.

Share your finding with the other groups.

Instructions
1.

Select a group leader.

2.

The leader gets Activity Card 3, Illustrations for Activity Card 3

and a protractor from the teacher. These materials will be passed
around in this manner

One student measures any angle of the given triangles. As the

teacher say HOT POTATO, the next student measures another angle
of the given triangles. This goes on until all the angles of the triangles
are measured with the teacher saying HOT POTATO each time an
angle has been measured and recorded in the table (printed at the
back of the illustrations for Activity Card 3).

of the Triangle

Check the accuracy of the entries in the table by passing the Activity
Card, illustrations & protractor for the second time.

3.

Pass around the card again (waiting for the teacher to say HOT
POTATO) asking members to add the measures of the angles
of each triangle. If the angles have been added already, let the
rest of the members check the addition.

4.

Answer the following:

What is the sum of the measures of the three angles of

triangle DABC? DDEF? DGHI? DJKL? DMNO?

What conclusion can you make about the sum of the

measures of the angles of a triangle?

Worksheet
Without using a protractor, find the measure of the missing angle of each triangle.
