Investigate

Introduction
I found that the toldo area has several deficiencies, as proof I created a survey,
when I collected my data I found out that: 26 out of 31 find the told too crowded, 25 out
of 31 think that the toldo gets too cold during winter and to warm during summer and
finally 23 out of 31 people thought that they needed more microwaves. To solve this
problem of an uncomfortable toldo area that isnt appealing Im proposing to change the
structure of the toldo to make it ventilated during summer yet insulated during winter
while not imitating the space even further to make it more crowded. I am also planning to
find a way to double the amount of microwaves to cut down the line.
Designs Specs:
The space will need to hold at least 50 people
Toldo will not be too hot during summer and too cold during winter
At least 4 microwaves installed, and 10 or more power sockets
Design Spec Tests:
Each person needs .90 m of space to sit down comfortably (Askville). I will
measure the space and make sure that each person will have at least .9 m of sitting
space
I will test my toldo during winter and check if the heaters regulate temperature,
and I will check during summer to see if the mist makers are helping regulate heat

I will make sure that my design fits at least 4 microwaves properly, and I will also
check that I have power sockets throughout the area

Design Brief:
The toldo area in front of the center stage and kiosk is. The toldo is a very popular place
where usually 10th 12th grade students spend their lunches. Even though it is one of the
most popular areas in the campus, the toldo has some problems that have to be fixed. For
starters the toldo is extremely climate sensitive, during winter the toldo area is really cold
while the summer makes the toldo area too hot for it to be comfortable. Therefore I will
redesign the toldo area to make it more resistant to climate, therefore keeping the
temperature at a more comfortable level that will lead into more and better use of the
area. Another problem that the toldo has is that there are only 2 microwaves in the toldo
and the lines for the microwaves are huge and can take up a large part of our short lunch.
Therefore I will also make 4 microwaves fit so the lines advance faster letting people heat
their food faster so they can enjoy more of their free time. A 3 rd modification that I will
do is to add electricity sockets on the sides of the toldo area so students can charge their
laptops and other electronics that they used during the day so they can have battery and
be fully operational during the last period of the day. Finally I will make sure to design
the told so its more spacious to avoid being clustered and uncomfortable. My goal is to
fit 50 people comfortably (around half a grade). To do this I will make sure the toldo area
has enough tables to full fill everyones needs while having space to walk.
Guiding questions:
How can I make the toldo warm in winter and chill in summer?

How can I fit at least half a grade comfortably (50 people)

How can I put plugs for charging electronics
How can I make the area more chill and appealing to students
Research
Question 1: How can I make the toldo warm in winter and chill in summer?
The comfortable temperature in summer is 15* Celsius while the comfortable
temperature in winter is 20* Celsius. To achieve this I will install 4 heat lamps. Having
heaters placed in the top corners of the toldo area will enable the heat to spread properly
and have the toldo area be warm. Summer in Lima can reach temperatures of 25 - 28*, to
achieve the optimum temperature of 20* Celsius I will install artificial mist makers to
keep the area cool. The mist maker will not get you wet unless you are standing closer
than 3 (feet) to the mist maker. By placing the nozzles on the edges of the toldo I will
keep the area cool while not getting everyones food wet because of the distance. The
mist because the humidity in Lima is over 80% the mist maker will be able to decrease
the temperature of the area by 10*. This will achieve the goal of having a temperature
during summer that is in between 15 - 20*
Question 2: To fit 50 people comfortably I will take all the current tables out and the
center microwaves. I will make sure that I will have a square table in the middle that will
fit 8 people while having 2 tables on each side that fit 24 people. On the sides each
person will have a bit over 1 meter for themselves. The tables will have a width of .90 m
giving each person .45 m to place their things. In the middle table 8 people will fit in a
square table that surrounds the center pillar where the microwaves used to be. The table
will be able to fit 2 - 3 people per side with a total ranging in between 8 -12 people. On

the sides people will sit on already existing stone benches but I will add a small pillow to
make seating more comfortable, while the opposite side will place the slightly pillowed
chairs that can be found in the DT classrooms. For the center table I will put benches so
accommodate everyone and have people have different types of seating so everyone can
choose what they prefer the most.
Question 3: I will make sure to have 2 electricity sockets each 3 meters under the side
tables, therefore having 8 electric sockets under each side table therefore having 16
sockets where students can plug their electronics during lunch. The middle table will
have 1 electric socket for each person (in a scenario where only 8 people are sitting in the
middle area). There will be 2 sockets under each side of the table. In total there will be 24
sockets for students to charge their appliances during lunch, break and other times of the
day. This will solve the problem of having uncharged appliances during the last period
and it will increase the enjoyment of the toldo area as students will be able to use their
electronics without the fear of losing too much battery.
Question 4: Making the area more chill is something that is relative to each person.
Even though chill means different things for each individual, there are some common
standards that one can apply to make an area more chill. The first thing I will do is
regulate temperature to a comfortable range in between 15 20* degrees depending on
the season. I will also make the chairs more confortable, as comfortable seating is a key
element for someone to enjoy an area and be able to stay there for prolonged amounts of
time. Finally I will also add new speakers that will be of good quality. This way people
can plug in music and have everything listening to music at the same time that will make
the area more chill and relaxing. Even though there are speakers currently, the current

speakers are not of good quality and the music that comes out hurts your ears and disturbs
the vibes of the toldo area with the chunky and cut-off sound.

-> This was an important source because in this site I found ways to make my toldo area
more relaxing and chill. Even though this web site was specially made for houses Im
inferring that most of the techniques used to make houses more relaxing can be used at
homes. A limitation of this web site is that I have not corroborated the information with
another site, therefore I cannot know if the information is true 100% true.

-> Home advisor was a crucial source as I used to to find ways to cool the toldo in
summer without using too many resources and not altering the relaxed, chill atmosphere
that Im aiming to create. Again a limitation is that I did not corroborate this source with
other web based sources therefore the information may not be 100% valid.

-> this source was probably the least important as it told me tips to fit people in an area
and it helped me calculate how big and how much space im going to need to fit 50
people. A limitation of this source is that Life Hacker is written by online contributors,

this means that the information may be biased and no always 100% true, because of this I
googled other random sites which gave similar information, therefore I was able to beat
this limitation.

Room_temperature>.
-> In wikipedia I found the most comfortable temperatures for my toldo. This was of
outmost importance because one of my design specifications was to have regulated
temperature in the toldo (not too hot or too cold). Wikipedia gave me all the information I
needed to be able to calculate the amount of heaters and mist makers Ill need to cool and
warm the toldo. A limitation of Wikipedia is that anyone can edit the page therefore I had
to search Google for other sources again to make sure that the information that Wikipedia
gave me wasnt fake.

-> Askville was important for my investigate because I found the average space needed
for a human to sit comfortably in this page. Even though I found the information I needed
I had to check that the information was real by corroborating with other sources because
Askville is a yahoo answers type web page where people ask questions and other people
answer their questions.
