School taxes
could increase
If preliminary budget passes, average
homeowner will see $244.29 increase
By BRIGIT BAUMA

In Moorestown High Schools Spamalot, King Arthur, played by senior Stephen Gross, and the Lady
of the Lake, played by junior Nicole Tsarouhas, come together at a Las Vegas-like Camelot during the
song Knights Of The Round Table/The Song That Goes Like This (Reprise). The MHS performances
of Spamalot run Feb. 26, 27, 28 and March 4, 6 and 7.

King Arthurs story with a twist

Moorestown High School presents comedic musical Spamalot
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
When you come to see MHS
spring musical, you will escape
to the magical land of Camelot
with King Arthur, the Lady of
the Lake and his knights, along
with loads of crazy fun other
characters. However, this is not
your regular King Arthur story.
MHS spring musical this

year is the musical comedy

Spamalot, based on Monty
Pythons film about the search
for the Holy Grail. This is one of
the first high school performances in New Jersey since its release from Broadway. Spamalot features dances, songs
and jokes of all kinds that will
appeal to all audiences, and with
such a talented cast, the night
promises to be a fun escape from

reality to Camelot.
It hasnt been done by a lot of
schools. There is only one that
we know of in New Jersey that
is doing this show, director and
choreographer Erica Scanlon
Harr said. Its completely different from what we normally
do. Its ridiculous, which makes
it a lot of fun.
please see OPENING, page 11

The
average
Moorestown
homeowner, with a home assessed at $446,500, would pay an
additional $244.29 per year in
school taxes if the school districts preliminary budget is
passed as it was presented at the
Feb. 17 Board of Education meeting.
The second preliminary budget
was projected at $65.6 million in
expenditures and $64.5 million in
revenue. The board said the projected $1.1 million deficit would
be made up for by using a Spending Growth Limitations Adjustment of $683,601 for health-care
costs as well as the use of $452,830
in banked cap from the 2012-2013
budget.
The SGLA is a spending adjustment cap that allows the district
to go beyond the 2 percent cap
without a need for a referendum.
Moorestown didnt qualify for
this in previous years but does
this year. The budget also assumes flat state aid of $3.7 mil-

lion. Final state aid numbers

were scheduled to be announced
on Feb. 24.
I just want to reiterate, this is
still a work in progress. The numbers literally change on an hourly
basis as we are going through this
process. So numbers changed
from the last time we met so I anticipate they will change again,
said
business
administrator/board secretary
Lynn Shugars, who made the
budget presentation.
The board said it has been in
talks with the South Jersey
Health Insurance Fund to try to
save some money. The districts
current plan with Aetna is estimated to increase by 22 percent to
27 percent. The fund has a maximum increase of 15 percent, so
switching the districts health insurance provider could help it
save $1 million, the board said.
Salaries and benefits account
for $52.6 million, or roughly 80
percent, of the total budget.

and Careers test, the new standardized assessment for New Jersey, Moorestown Township Public
Schools has updated its protocol
for test refusals and test day absences.
Parents or guardians who refuse to allow their child to take
the PARCC assessment should
submit a written statement as
soon as possible to the building
principal so officials can plan accordingly. Students whose parents have submitted a statement
of intent and attend school on the
testing day will be marked present and provided with an alternate, supervised setting in a nontesting room where they will be
asked to read quietly or work independently. Those who have not
submitted a letter of intent and
do not attend school will be
marked absent. Those who have
submitted a written statement of
intent will not be required to sit
for a make-up, while those who
havent submitted one will be
scheduled to sit for the missed
portion of the PARCC assessment.
Also, in the past, when a student refused to take a state-mandated test, the district was re-

quired to record the test as void

and include the students ID number on an Irregularity Report.
The district will follow the
recording procedures required by
the state Department of Education for the PARCC assessment.
Officials also assured parents the
state-mandated recording of test
administration would not affect a
students class grades or placement.
These procedures are in line
with one of the procedure options
issued by Strauss-Esmay, which
are the policy writers for the
state.
This update of protocol is in response to parent forums presented at the schools to talk about
PARCC as well as a Board of Education meeting where one parent,
representing those concerned
about refusals, asked the board to
provide what its policy would be.
Jack Fairchild, a Moorestown
parent as well as one of the parents
who
is
running
Moorestowns No More Common Core Facebook page, was
the one to address the board asking for an updated policy. Accordplease see TESTING, page 12

onday, March 2 is going to be

a different kind of day in
public schools throughout
New Jersey. Thats the first day the
long-awaited, and highly-controversial,
Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career test will be
administered.
PARCC, as its better known, is the
newest version of the annual standardized test that students have been taking for years. There have always been
debates as to whether standardized
tests do any good, or whether the results provide any useful information.
But the fact is that standardized testing has been around for decades, and
PARCC is just the newest version.
Sure, this version is taken entirely
on a computer, not with a pen and
Scantron, leaving many concerned
about whether students can perform
well. Todays students grew up with
this technology, though, so they should
have no issue adjusting to taking a test
on a computer; it may even be easier
for them.
Sure, this version only measures

performance in math and English,

leaving many concerned that it is taking away instructional time in other
subjects. The SAT has been testing in
only those two subjects for years,
though, and no one seems to have a
problem with that.
Its not just parents who have a problem with PARCC. The New Jersey Education Association launched online
and TV ads last week that, in one spot,
asked emphatically: what are we
doing to our kids?
Well, we are testing them, just like
we have tested them in the past.
Contrary to how this might read, we
are not in favor of PARCC, or standardized testing in general. We agree that
there has to be a better way to judge
students, and teachers, than a national
standardized test. But encouraging
students to not take the test sends the

wrong message, and teaches the wrong

lesson. We shouldnt be teaching our
students that its OK to avoid taking a
test because you dont agree with it.
Should they also say no to homework,
because they dont agree that it properly assesses their learning? Should they
not take a final exam in college because its taken on a computer?
Voicing opinions and concerns and
standing up for what you believe in are
good lessons to teach. But attacking
the schools, which have no choice in
administering the test, and teaching
students that its OK to refuse to take
the test are not the way to approach the
issue. Sometimes in life, we have to do
what we dont want to do and dont
agree with doing.
Take the fight to the legislators who
approved the testing. Lobby them to
change the rules.
While passing PARCC isnt a requirement to graduate high school
now, it will be starting with the class of
2019. And what will you do then prevent students from graduating because
they refused to take a test?

Free series on Feb. 26 will educate on ACL injuries

One of the most common knee injuries
for athletes and competitors is an anterior
cruciate ligament sprain or tear. Those
who participate in high demand sports
such as soccer, football and basketball are
more likely to injure their ACLs.
To help educate young athletes, parents
and coaches, Strive Physical Therapy and
The Field House are offering a free educational series on Thursday, Feb. 26 from 6
p.m. to 9 p.m. called ACL Injury Prevention. The event will take place at The Field
House, 605 Glen Ave., in Moorestown and

feature Dr. Sean McMillan, director of Orthopedic Sports Medicine at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County, as a special presenter, along with Dr. Lee Cohen
and Dr. Kristen Herbst. The event also includes ACL screenings by Strive Physical
Therapy staff.
The anterior cruciate ligament can be
injured in several ways, explains McMillan. These ways include: changing direction rapidly; stopping suddenly; slowing
down while running; landing from a jump
incorrectly; making direct contact or col-

liding, such as a football tackle

Female athletes in particular have a
higher incidence of ACL injury. Research
suggests it could be due to differences in
physical conditioning, neuromuscular control, leg alignment and ligament properties.
Treatment for an ACL sprain or tear depends on several factors, such as severity of
the injury and the athletes activity level.

FEB. 25MARCH 3, 2015 THE MOORESTOWN SUN 11

Opening night of Spamalot is Feb. 26

OPENING
Continued from page 1
MHS version of Spamalot
also features vocal direction by
Sergey Tkachenko, orchestra direction by Greg Connlain and
business management by Greg
Harr.
Lovingly ripped off from the
classic film comedy Monty
Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot retells the legend of King
Arthur and his sacred quest for
the Holy Grail. In this musical
comedy, Arthur, played by senior
Stephen Gross, joined by the Lady
of the Lake, junior Nicole
Tsarouhas; loyal servant Patsy,
junior Gwen Wilkie; Sir Robin,
senior Dylan Farnsworth; Sir
Galahad, freshman Rohan Wadhwa; Sir Lancelot, senior Rahul
Wadhwa; and Sir Bedevere, senior Liam Davies, encounters clas-

sic Monty Python characters

such as the Black Knight, Tim the
Enchanter, the Knights Who Say
Ni and Prince Herbert, not to
mention cows, killer rabbits and
French people.
It is great for first-time musical attendees because it is fun and
easy to follow. Also, if you know
the movie or Monty Python, the
show is packed with references
from movies and shows, Greg
Harr said.
I think its really great. It has
humor for people who normally
wouldnt come out for a musical,
but even if you arent a Monty
Python fan, which also draws in a
great audience, if youre into
comedy and sheer humor it is
great to see. It has great songs
that a musician would appreciate,
and if you listen to the lyrics and
scenes in between the songs, it
has humor for everyone,
Tsarouhas said.
The show appeals to all kinds
of humor, from British sarcasm

TESTING
Continued from page 2
ing to Fairchild, he attended a few
of the PARCC information sessions and noted the district was
going with a "sit and stare" approach to the refusals, so he,
along with other parents, engaged the media.
On Jan. 28, Fairchild said they
received a letter that stated,
"Presently, no law, statute or regulation exists that confers such a
right upon parent/guardians, or
for that matter, students, to refuse
to take such assessments or tests."
Attached to the letter were testing
procedures with procedure one
stating, "Students who attend
school, but refuse to participate in
the assessment, will be asked to
take it. Any student who continues to refuse shall remain in their
assigned seat until the last student taking the test is finished."
At that time, they sent strongly

worded letters to the administration, spoke to legislators and continued to engage the media. Then
on Feb. 6, they received the revised procedures, which accommodated refusals in a non-punitive way.
The new policy is exactly
what we hoped to see, and we
thank the board and administration for listening to the voice of
the people, Fairchild said.
Superintendent Timothy Rehm
said the board was not going with
a sit and stare policy, but did realize from feedback of the forums
about PARCC that the protocol
needed to be updated. The board
didnt want to put students in an
uncomfortable situation and decided to put them in a supervised
environment where they could do
educational work or read on their
own. This worked in favor of not
only those who refused to test, but
also those who are still taking the
test.
We kept in mind what we
wanted to do with our students,

since the state didnt really give

much guidance, and went with
the independent reading and
work that would be productive in
a separate environment. It also
preserves the testing environment for those who are testing. It
worked in favor of both students.
We dont have many refusals; I
would say about 98 percent of students will be testing, Rehm said.
He also wanted to remind parents that they are not using
PARCC as a measure for passing
or moving on to the next grade,
since this is a new test and they
arent sure how the data will be.
We have multiple measures to
place students until we determine
the validity of the test, Rehm
said.
Rehm as well as Fairchild
wanted to remind parents that
though there is no date refusals
need to be provided by, they are
asked to provide as much notice
as possible so the schools can
plan accordingly, as testing starts
on March 2.

abundance, an organization dedicated to ending hunger in the
Delaware Valley.
It is one of our biggest and
longest running charity events,
said MHS senior Saylor Brisson,
former Interact Club president
and advertising co-chair for
Soup for the Soul.
Soup for the Soul, though
hosted by MHSs Interact Club,
has additional supporters. The
group has been working with
local businesses, which were willing to help. Local restaurants donated the soup and bread that will
be served throughout the afternoon. The event also features raffle and silent auction items donated by local businesses and larger
organizations such as Happy
Hippo, Moorestown Running
Company, Philly Pretzel Factory,

Panera
Bread,
Philadelphia
sports teams and more.
Also at the event will be live entertainment. Music will be provided by local musicians and
there is a possibility that radio
station 104.5 will be there as well.
It is great to see everything
come into place. We start meetings in the beginning of the
school year and plan everything
up until the event, and have a lot
of work afterward. It is amazing
to see all of our hard work pay
off, Brisson said.
Tickets will be sold at the door
for $10 for adults and $7 for seniors and children. There is also a
new takeout option, where for
$10, you will receive a container
of your favorite soup, as well as
two pieces of bread. All proceeds
will be donated to Philabundance.
We think Philabundance is a
great charity since they are trying to end hunger. Soup for the
Soul is kind of a play off of soup
kitchens. Instead of giving soup

to those who need it, we raise

money using soup that we can donate to those in need, Brisson
said.
About 200 people came in years
past, but Brisson said the club
would love to see greater attendance each year. Last year, the
club raised more than $4,000, and
at $0.50 a meal, this provided
more than 8,000 meals for the
hungry
and
malnourished
throughout the Delaware Valley.
This year, the goal is $5,000.
Were hoping to keep increasing attendance. Its really great to
have as many people as we can,
Brisson said.
The MHS Interact Club would
love for families, friends, residents and others to attend on Saturday, Feb. 28. For just $10, not
only can you have an enjoyable afternoon, but also help those in
need. MHS Interact Club is dedicated to serving the community
and is sponsored by Rotary International.

PROGRAMS

p.m., Monday through Thursday
weekly. The Four Is Fun preschool program is located at the
Church Street Recreation Center.
This fantastic facility will offer
preschoolers a complete compliment of age appropriate learning
and activities.
The Summer Parks Program
begins June 22 and runs through
Friday, July 24. The Summer
Parks Program, known for its relaxed and fun atmosphere, will
again offer young people ages 5
through 12 the opportunity to
play, learn and grow with friends.
Locations for the Summer Parks
Program will be New Albany
Recreation Center (Jeff Young
Park), Roberts School and the
Moorestown Upper Elementary

School. Due to the passing of the

bond referendum in November,
Baker School and South Valley
School will be closed for construction purposes this summer.
Youth interested attending the
Summer Parks Program are welcome to enroll at any of the three
2015 locations.
Additionally, the Special Needs
Summer Recreation Program
will return again at WAMS with
an extension of services. Due to a
generous donation from the Sean
Fischel Connect organization, the
Department of Parks And Recreation is proud to announce the extension of the Special Needs
Camp to students ages 12 through
18. The Special Needs Summer
Program has provided services to
students up to sixth grade for the
last decade. This year, with the
help of Sean Fischel Connect,
these students who have aged
out of the original program are

now able to continue their summers in the loving and supportive

arms of the Special Needs Camp
and its staff. Special Needs Summer Program will be divided into
two specific age groups: ages 5
through 13, students transitioning from first through sixth
grades, and ages 12 through 18,
students transitioning from sixth
grade through 12th grade. The
Special Needs Summer Program
will run Monday, July 6 through
Friday July 31, Mondays through
Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30
p.m. and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 3:30
p.m.
One of the best aspects of the
Department of Parks & Recreation summer programs is the
professional staff that fills each
location. Professionals, certified
teachers, educators and para-professionals oversee each program
and are aided by trained and carefully selected counselors and volunteers. Each program boasts
the best combination of staffing
available. This combination with
the departments relationships
with local non-profits and organizations allows the Moorestown
Department of Parks & Recreation Summer Programs to be
among the best in the state.

Show suits this years cast

SHOW
Continued from page 11
show is also an equal opportunity
offender, making jokes about and
to everyone and everything.
Even if coming to the show
isnt something you normally do,
I highly encourage it. Not just because I am in the show and everyone is great, but its so entertaining for everyone. You dont have
to be a theater geek to appreciate
how talented these kids are,
Tsarouhas said.
This show is my favorite that
Ive done so far. There are jokes
everywhere, and that is just my
favorite part. Its a good show for
the group we have because we are
all very comical. When I think of
this show, I think pure comedy,
Farnsworth said.
People should expect to laugh.
I think theyre going to have fun.
It is just a fun show, Scanlon

Harr said.
According to Scanlon Harr, the
show was chosen not only because it is new and a fun comedic
performance that would appeal to
everyone, but because it really
suited this years cast. Theyve
been working on it since December, and Scanlon Harr felt the students have really progressed
throughout the rehearsal process,
even with missed snow days.
Were very fortunate. We have
a lot of strong and talented guys
as well as girls. This is a show
that lends itself to a lot of people
who are willing to take risks and
be funny, and we felt that suited
our program nicely, Scanlon
Harr said.
The director hopes those who
attend will enjoy it and see the
performance as a fun escape from
reality. She hopes they forget
their struggles and instead laugh
and dance along with the cast of
Spamalot.
Its going to be one of the

biggest shows of recent time in

Moorestown because it is such a
well known show with Monty
Python. My family is going to invite more friends than they normally would to see the show because it is just a great show to
come see, Gross said.
Performances will take place
in the Moorestown High School
auditorium located at 350 Bridgeboro Road on Thursday, Feb. 26;
Friday, Feb. 27; Saturday, Feb. 28;
Friday, March 6; and Saturday,
March 7. All performances are at
7:30 p.m. All tickets are $12. The
Saturday, Feb. 28 performance
will be ASL interpreted for the
deaf and hard-of-hearing. There
is a special matinee performance
for senior citizens on Wednesday,
March 4 at noon.
