Annotated Bibliography
Primary Sources
Books
Davis, Allen F, and Mary Bryan Lynn McCree. Eighty Years at Hull-House.
Toronto: Burns and MacEachern 1969. Print.
This book is a primary source because it is recaptured through the eyes of
people involved with the first American Settlement: The Hull-House. Although
edited and occasionally narrated by authors, a majority of the book is written
completely through excerpts of books, letters, newspaper articles, invitations,
publicity, etc. chronologically. The source takes the reader and researcher
through the detailed timeline of the Hull-House from the moment it was
conceived. It includes a brief history of the founder, Jane Addams.
Commentary
Harrington, Margaret. "The Legacy of Jane Addams." Web log post.
Vtdigger. N.p., 31 Dec. 2013. Web. 16 Nov. 2014.
This is a commentary by the founder of the Jane Addams Peace Association.
She talks about the impact Jane left in the United States in the aspects of
social and political reform. Harrington also mentions how Jane Addams' work
lead to improvements in the democratic nation.
Magazine Articles
Hanning, Amalie. "Christmas at Hull House." Ladies Home Journal Dec.
1911: n. pag. Web.
This is a primary source because it was written by a magazine who
experienced the holiday and joyous occasion of the Hull House. The Hull
House held many dances and parties as a way of including the community
and especially at Christmas did thousands of immigrants come and visit. This
fits in with my category about the Hull House and its work.
Weil, Elsie F. ""The Hull-House Players" Theatre Magazine Sept. 1913: Xixxii. Web. 16 Nov. 2014.
This is a primary source that was written by a lady who experienced the Hull
House amateur theatre group. This article gives a detailed review of the Hull
House Players' tour across Europe and mentions the Hull House Dramatic
Association and the work it has done- a theatre group made up of immigrants
who perform artistically and beautifully.

Newspaper Articles
"Hull House Basketball." Chicago Chronicle. 25 May 1902: n. pag. Print.
This is a primary source written and published in a Chicago newspaper in
1902 and praises the invincibility of the Hull House Basketball Team. Although
it was not socially acceptable for women to participate in sports activities like
football and baseball, basketball was good exercise and graceful. This can be
included in activities at the Hull House that helped reach out to immigrants
as well as reach out to women who were athletically inferior.
Two Womens Work. The Chicago Tribune. 19 May 1890: 1-2. Print.
This newspaper article is a primary source because it is a publicity story
written about the Hull-House in 1890 about a year after it was founded by
Jane Addams. This piece was written as a result of a party held for Italian
immigrants to listen to music and talk with one another. The speaker was
shocked to see such charitable women have moral motives in helping the
community. This kind of positive publicity helped lead to the success the
social reformers would have in the community.
