Title: Blue Pottery Vase With

Apples and Lemons

Artist: Elizabeth Blaylock
Size: 35.5cm 27.9cm
Medium: Oil on canvas
There is a bowl containing
apples and a lemon with a
cloth underneath which sits on
a hard surface. Outside the
bowl on the surface is one
apple and one lemon and a
vase. Brush strokes on the objects such as the cloth and fruit
creates a textured effect. In contrast to this, the bowl which has a
much smoother surface with less revealing brush strokes. The
colours of the items are reflected on nearby items and on the cloth
too creating a unified colour scheme. The emphasis is on the apples
and lemon as they are the only items with warm colours. The
composition is balanced as the items are centrally placed and
appear evenly weighted. Unity is formed as balance is reached and
there isnt any oddly placed items.
Title: Compotier, Glass And
Apples (Still Life With
Compotier)
Artist: Paul Cezanne
Size: 46cm x 55cm
Medium: Oil on canvas
Date: 1880
This painting contains a bowl
of fruit, like apples and
grapes, more fruit is
scattered around the bowl,
along with a knife closer to
the front and a glass cup in
the rear. Paul Cezanne has thick and visible brush strokes that
shows blocks of colors and gives the objects a solid feel to them.
The brush strokes are not messy but mostly in one direction. The
fruits are all placed on white surface because the white cloth
strongly contrasts the colors of the fruit. On parts of the cup, the
wall and the cloth green strokes are presented. This is because the
green fruits have their colors reflected onto those surfaces. Balance
is reached as the heaviest group of objects is placed in the middle
and there is a triangular arrangement, since there is a spread of
objects across the table and also a smaller group of objects sitting
above them. Unity is then achieved with this balance.

Title: Fruit Still Life With

Tapestry
Artist: Unknown
Size: 20 x 24
Medium: Oil Painting
Date: 2000
This painting includes fruit
like pears, apples and
oranges, some in a bowl and
some on a plate. They are placed on a cloth. This painting has an
earthy tone because the colors used are mostly warm colors such as
reds, yellows and browny oranges. The rough texture of the
complicated cloth pattern in the background creates a contrast
because the objects are less textured and the plain white cloth is
even less so. Tonal values are strong in the objects and cloth which
gives a sense of solidity and 3 dimensions, and the shadows also
help to acheive this effect. The triangular shape formed by the three
groups of objects helps achieve a sense of balance as does the
contrast between the smooth surface of the foreground with the
textured background. There isnt an obvious emphasis as all objects
are colored with similar tones.

Artist: Marie L. Allen

Medium: Watercolor and
acrylic paint
Size: 22 x 27
Date: 2008
This painting contains a vase
with a plant, a bowl of pears, a
pear, a teapot and a bottle.
This painting does not have
obvious brush strokes but still
has its colors in block form
which helps create the illusion
of 3D. The emphasis could be
on the pears because they have bright oranges and are in the
middle. The yellow on and around the plants and scattered further

to the right could be from the sunlight as the light source is from the
left. The compositional format is divided into 1/3, 2/3 with the
horizon line at the bottom one third of the composition. The vertical
surface has a lighter tone than the horizontal surface to create a
sense of depth, although this is very shallow. The composition is
balanced because the bowl of fruit is centrally placed and the
remaining objects are evenly spread either side. The leaves create a
small sense of movement to the static and solid looking objects.
