Black & White Negatives

Scanning

2. Adjust Settings to what you see here

1. Open Epson Scan

3. Click Preview

5. Click Histogram
Adjustment

4. Check images you


want to scan

6. Click on each image separately and adjust it by dragging the


triangles to the edge of the Histogram, click Close when done

It will look too dark, thats okay - it will be adjusted later

7. Click on File Save Settings


8. Choose Other in order
to save to the Desktop,
name it and select JPEG

9. Click Scan

10. Open Photoshop

12. Convert to
Grayscale

11. Crop (C) and Rotate if needed

13. Resize image, uncheck Resample Image


and change resolution to 300

Editing
14. Create a Levels
Adjustment Layer

15. Adjust by
moving all 3
triangles in
the Histogram
until it looks
the best

Move the black and


white triangles in, slide
the gray triangle left
or right. Look for
contrast as well as
details in highlights
and shadows

Dodge & Burn


16. Create a New Layer
17. Fill layer with
50% Gray

18. Change layers Blending


Mode to Soft Light

19. Set the Foreground


and Background colors
to their default, black
and white, by pressing D

20. Select the Brush tool (B)

Switch between two


colors by pressing X

Adjust the Hardness to 0, adjust the Brush


size with the Master Diameter slider

Adjust the
opacity to
around 25%

21. Paint on the Gray layer


to Dodge and Burn

Using white Dodges (lightens), using


black Burns (darkens)

What
only the
gray layer
looks like
Go slowly, adjust the brush size and opacity when needed.
Undo (Z) or Step Backwards (Option Z) if necessary

When dodging and


burning you want
details in the
shadows and in the
highlights, use your
print as a reference

Dust Removal
22. On a flattened
image (only one layer)

Use the Spot Healing
Brush Tool (J) to
select dust that needs
to be removed.

Adjust the Diameter


as needed and make
the Hardness 0%

23. You can also use the Clone Stamp Tool


(S) for more specific editing. Hold Option to
select where you are copying from, then let
go and click to paste.

24. Adjust the Diameter and


Hardness like before but also
adjust the Opacity (I usually
leave it around 30-40%).

Saving
25. Save As

26. Name it,


make sure
the Format is
Photoshop
and you save
it to the
Desktop

27. Next, Flatten


the image
28. Save As, name it
as an edit, change
Format to JPEG

Resizing
29. Resize for uploading by
checking Resample Image,
resolution 72 and 10 inches
in the longest dimension

30. Save As, name it


as small, change
Format to JPEG

Rename your final files with


the name of the assignment

You now have 2 versions of your scan:

JPEG at 300 resolution

2. JPEG resized to 72 resolution for Mahara
