Seri Mengasih centre is a special development centre for the special needs, located at near

beach of Tanjung Aru providing comprehensive training and continues rehabilitation training for
the student both aim to promote to meet the needs of living in society. It was first open at 1981
as a first disability schools in Sabah. Its a project that collaborated with Sabah mental
association to establish by the board of management. The footballers changing room is the first
class room for the 10 children aged between 6 to 12 years old. There have 3 staff and helper
and a CUSO (Canada) volunteer also a Principle of the school.
In 1983 the school moves to a better location in a government residence buildings which have a
spacious surrounding space with a very conductive surrounding placed area. The school have a
wide playground suitable for outdoor activities and not forgetting the beach just outside the with
school splendid scenery. It also located at a very quite area with less traffic safe for the kids to
cross the road or conduct any activities.
The school now has develop into a centre which can occupied more than 150 students with 25
staff to still can accommodated the need for the student here. Their mission for this is to seek to
raise the hope and dignity of the intellectually and developmentally disabled by providing for
their holistic development from the earliest age until, as far as possible, they have achieved
socio-economic independence and are successfully included and integrated into the
mainstream of community life. This can only be done through the combined effort of the staff,
parents and the general public. Their philosophy is (Where there is love, There is hope).(Where
there is integrity, There is integrity). Educating the society the public every disable person are
need respect equally treated, and not to base on stereotypically treated. Fair is not giving
everyone the same thing. Fair is giving everyone what they need.
The center proudest achievement is being the school to set up the first disabilities school from a
class at the footballer locker room that only have 10 student to a fully furnished school that not
only teach the kids academically but also being able to train the children in term of skill
workmanship like art and craft, bakery, to skills set up a car wash.
During our short period of placement, the centre main goal is assign us with different types of
cases. I myself have taken a client with Chereo-athetosis Cerebral palsy, the role is to identify
the types CP of cases and differentiate the types of CP. Second is to assess the client with the
use of case study and assessment sheet to find out any limitation and deformity of client. Third
is to hand in the report and present the case study to the therapist for evaluation and alteration.
We also done several assisting and conducting throughout the placement this included helping

educator to assisting in clients outdoors activities such as teach the client to do proper
stretching playing and during some occasion we help the kids in the class when we are doing
survey in the class. Some of the small contribution is we made a small amount of donation to
the center as contribution for all three of us.
Physiotherapy plays a huge role in the centre they are just like any other limb in the body,
without it you still can live but in the same times you have so much limitation doing things.
Providing quality of life in people and off course nowadays drugs can prevent or deliberate the
development of disease but as for physiotherapist our aim is to minimize disability and maximize
independence of people. In the centre physiotherapy treat mainly neurological or congenital
disease and with the kind disease need regular revaluation and continues intervention to
prevent any complication and long term treatable complication. Physiotherapy also helps to
keep the client fit and healthy with regular exercises in every morning and a specialist regime in
the Sensory integration therapy (SIT) which also helps in boasting their senses. In sensory
integrative therapy the therapists assess a persons sensory difficulties and then develop a
personalized treatment programmed in which they use the most appropriate techniques and
tools to overcome those difficulties. While in MSR activities the purpose to facilitate sensory
difficulties in person with stimulation from touch to hear which lead them experiencing self
control, increase self esteem, and induced relaxation. Through the process of the placement I
have humble up myself again, the process have taught me to see a wider picture of
physiotherapy service towards the society, even open up my hearts to learn things that we cant
learn in the class such appreciation towards life and to see the kids just to live in their fullest.
Sometimes in life we need to talk with a 5 year old so you can understand life again, despite
with their illnesses they didnt worry what future holds them, again with ourselves why should be
worrying while our all 4 limb is functioning well. I also have the chance to do full assessment
with the client and the therapist have corrected me with a lot of mistake and I also can observe
with the others doing assessment with other client with different illnesses, autism, down
syndrome. If Im one of the therapist there I will chose to give more hands on skills to the
student that come for placement and also because of the low student intake right now that
needed physiotherapy I think I can give open free service to the community to receive free
treatment for maybe starting with the parents member that need treatment. It also can make it
as a small side income by charitable donation by the people that procure the service. There is
ups and downs on my goal the good news is I was able to finished up some of my assessment
and treatment but the down side is I wish that I have sufficient time to learn more especially on
observing the client behavior and pattern to base on planning treatment intervention.

Our role of a health heath care professionals either serving in private and public sector be
required to able take responsible and fulfill the demand of the client, beside that being able to
care for the needed and treat with based their profession and understanding to give the best
service for the client. From this I to learn from to serve at different setting both private and public
sector to really differentiate the work environment, hours and practice.
Heath care professionals also need to be adaptable to various kinds of situation either working
in a interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and tan-disciplinary team in various kind of environment
like environment with insufficient or unfamiliar equipment, this can test our creativity in another
level. Personally I think me myself as an Partially introvert tend to have a bit of difficulties adapt
to place quickly, it took me some times to settle to a place. I think sometimes I have get out of
my comfort zone and start not to rely on parents that much, eventually can independent myself
hence I will learn more about the outside world or my comfort zone. Being part of mummys boy
I really need my parents to understand my situation and ultimately let me explore myself and
real world in my own perspective consequently I need a proper discussion with my parents
especially my dad to achieve this.
Seri Mengasih is a school ranging from pediatrics to teenage adult age (5-30) so difficulty will be
based from illness, age, neurological condition and maturation. For my case so far my client is
10 years old with cerebral palsy so there is already presence of difficulty in daily basis activities
with limitation. So it already opposes a difficulty already for me to keep him moving around. One
of the most difficult things for most of the pediatrics cases is keeping their attention in one place
or keeping their focus on the exercise hence you are tested with your creativity on creating an
exercise regime or assessment that is fun and interactive. This will make them more engage
and cooperate with all the activities that impose to them. So what are the differences between
ages of groups you ask well the older people based on my friend that work in a different centre
told me that older people will tend to be a bit more stubborn to worked they also have this
mindset that make them think that they know everything for example they state that they used to
walked and know how to walk before so atomically why should I listen to your advice. This is
back breaking sometimes, in the same time you want them to recover while not being rude to
them.

This experience has off course elevated me in another level or somehow opens up my eyes to
looks on things differently. Surely I would like to maintain my willingness to learn even on small

detail things especially thing I have taken granted for. I wish during my placement that I wasnt
all that cringe on asking favors that slows my work particularly on my assessment, to make
matters even worst I only have few days a week to meet him. Im also realize that sometimes I
somewhat am a stiff person and in my profession we must have charisma altitude that is not yet
fully develop in me. I as well wish to have more sympathy and empathy feeling towards the kids,
I believe this form of feeling can help me to understand them better. Personally I think this
simple placement should be existed in both semester one or semester 2 even a simple 3 day
placement will do the trick to boast the confident, or just to know what is this profession about, it
will give the student a clear idea and it can take it as a self evaluation by the end of the
semester to see whether the skills that we have learned can applied in a specific situation. Im
thankful to all staffs that given support throughout the placement therefore I want to give credit
to all the therapist there and teachers that scarifying, investing time and energy to make this
centre successful. Also I want to shout out to our therapist I will name them one by one, two of
the PT both Natalie and Silvia for giving us not only alteration and advice but also in life lesson,
not forgetting also Madam Elsa for the guidance and individual supervision of the from the
beginning till the end of the placement.
