prophesied?
f Most o f all, Where does this leave the
future o f our country and our world?
For people grasping for answers and
searching for truth in the shadow o f jihad,
Ravi Zacharias puts in perspective why we
ask what we ask. God s imprint, says
Zacharias, is not only in the answers, but
also in the questions themselves.
If we find those answers, writes Zacharias,
they will spell life, steadying the soul even
though the heart still aches.

they did know the events about to take place and did
not alert us, what does it say o f their culpability?
But God knew, didnt He? W hy, then, didnt He
warn us or prevent it from happening?
That is the soul-wrenching struggle with the
question o f prophecy. W h at must we know in order to
live informed and meaningful lives, while not fully
knowing the future?
The Bible says much on this matter. But before I go
into specifics, it would be wise to see how the biblical
writers handle prophecy. I do so with caution because
this is an area where exploitation can be both a
temptation and a possibility.

the young lad and what the future held for him: He
w ill be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be
against everyone and everyones hand against him, and
he w ill live in hostility toward all his brothers
(Genesis 16:12).
Is this what we are seeing fulfilled today? Perhaps
Abraham was aware o f what God had told Hagar
about Ishmaels future and struggled with his fear over
what might happen in a conflict between the brothers.
W ith Gods promise o f such miraculous proportion
before him, Abraham yet pleaded in prayer that God
would not forget Ishmael. God answered him, saying,
Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and
you will call him Isaac. I will establish my
covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for
his descendants after him. And as for Ishmael, I
have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make
him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers.
He will be the father o f twelve rulers, and I will
make him into a great nation. But my covenant I
will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to
you by this time next year. (Genesis 17:1921)
In case you take issue with the Jews being given a
privileged role and say, W h at else would you expect
from the pen o f Moses, but to present Isaac as the
covenant son? I suggest you also look at the words of

years ago about the city set on a hill that w ill become,
as the King James translation puts it, a cup of
trembling to all who oppose it (Zechariah 12:2). This
city has seen enemies trample her underfoot, her walls
built up and destroyed, peace processes stalemated
because o f her, martyrs dying in her defense, her
streets covered with blood, and opposing factions in a
titanic struggle calling her home.
Scholars have raised serious questions about the
legitim acy or illegitim acy o f the Islamic claim that
Jerusalem is their holy city. For our purpose, I just
point out the specificity o f the prophetic voice in
reminding us that Jerusalem would be at the center o f
the conflict. No honest individual can read the Bible
and miss the prominent place Jerusalem holds. God
H im self said o f this city, See, I have engraved you
on the palms o f my hands; your walls are ever before
me (Isaiah 4 9 :1 6 ). One o f the psalmists, while in
captivity in Babylon, wrote, If I forget you, O
Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill. M ay my
tongue cling to the roof o f my mouth if I do not
remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my
highest joy (Psalm 137:56).
Truly, this is a city that cannot be hid and will not
be obliterated. It is not accidental that the eternal city
is called the New Jerusalem. Ownership o f this
embattled city has defined success or failure for

9:6-7)
You see, only the child was born. T he Son was not
born; the Son was given. He was not born because He
eternally exists. H is name is Jesus. He is the stone
uncut by human hands. He came to offer forgiveness
to us all and to teach us what it means to be part o f
His family and to honor one another. H um ility was
H is hallmark. Goodness was H is essence. W hen Peter
tried to keep H im from being arrested, He told Peter
to put away his sword. In H is life, in H is death, and in
His resurrection, He showed us what a perfect life
looks like. He built no earthly kingdom and refused to
be conscripted as a king, but H e raised up a
formidable group o f followers who, with H is message,
have conquered the hearts o f men and women
throughout history. He sought no political power
because control is not the same thing as reverence. H e
told us to set our eyes not upon bricks and mortar, but
upon a city whose builder and maker is God. H e seeks
to dwell not in buildings made with hands, but in the
hearts o f men and women. T he Christian faith is not
about land or a place. It is about a relationship.

Both talked about the self, but one denied it even existed.
Both felt the pain of human suffering, but each had radically
different responses to it.
Both addressed our deepest hungers, but one saw them as an
impediment, the other as a clue.
Both have earned a worldwide following but their answers are
worlds apart.
Jesus and Buddha agreed that Truth could withstand scrutiny. Listen in
as the Soul of Truth speaks with the Heart of Compassion. It could
