a) A snail is climbing up the window-sill

Into your room, after a night of rain.
You call me in to see and I explain
That it would be unkind to leave it there :
It might crawl to the floor ; we must take care
That no one squashes it. You understand,
And carry it outside, with a careful hand,
To eat a daffodil.
I see, then, that a kind of faith prevails :
Your gentleness is moulded still by words.
From me, who have trapped mice and shot wild birds,
From me, who drowned your kittens, who betrayed
Your closest relatives and who purveyed
The harshest kind of truth to many another
But that is how things are : I am your mother,
And we are kind to snails.

But tis a wretched life to face

Hunger in almost every place ;
Cursed with a hand thats empty, when
The heart is full to help all men.

No doubt it is a selfish thing

To fly from human suffering ;
No doubt it is a selfish man,
Who shuns poor creatures sad and wan.

b) This life is sweetest ; in this wood

I hear no children cry for food ;
I see no women, white with care ;
No man, with muscles wasting here.

Can I admire the statue great,

When living men starve at its feet ?
Can I admire the parks green tree,
A roof for homeless misery ?
When I can see few men in need,
I then have power to help by deed,
Nor, lose my cheerfulness in pity
Which I must do in every city.

For when I am in those great places,

I see ten thousand suffering faces ;
Before me stares a wolfish eye,
Behind me creeps a groan or sigh.

c) Sufferings and struggles are often, painful because they seem meaningless.
When they are meaningful, they not only seem bearable, but are welcome,
because they will be fruitful. This is the hope that empowers us : not a hope
in a future reward, but an experience of present power and a hope of future
fulfillment not only in spite of , but in and through suffering. A child is sick in
the hospital. The worried mother is sitting by the child, watching it and caring
for it. In the process she forgets to eat, sleep and rest. But all these deprivations
are not only bearable. Her love for the child and her hope that her child will
soon be well makes her find some joy in such sacrifices. When the child

does get well, her love and caring are as responsible for the healing as any
medicines that the doctor may have given. The suffering of the mother is
creative and meaningful. It is no longer experienced as suffering. A soldier,
engaged in a battle, struggles hard and under goes various deprivations. He
risks his life and may even lose it. But he does not see it as suffering, but as
a sign of bravery, as a sacrifice for the sake of the others and of his country.
The meaning makes the pain bearable, welcome and productive.

d) Today business communication has become so important that many colleges

and universities, nationally and internationally, require the course for
graduation. It is becoming clear to all the concerned parties that communication
is critical to the effective functioning of modern business enterprises. Effective
communication is important both to the individual and to modern organizations.
A well-written resume and a cover letter, and a convincing interview can get
you the job you want even though more qualified people had applied for it.
And once you start working, you will find that good verbal and non-verbal
communication enables you to interact effectively with others and get work
done efficiently. Good communication skills can advance you socially, build
your self-confidence, enable you to help and lead others. Your ability to
receive, evaluate, use and pass on information gathered from inside and
outside the organization affects your companys effectiveness. Managers
rely on such information from their employees to take suitable and necessary
action. Communication per se can also help an organization by boosting the
employee morale. By keeping employees informed about what is going on
involving them in decision-making and getting feed back from them regarding
their attitudes and suggestions, managers can raise the employee morale.
As a result, employees are more willing to assume responsibility and support
the managements efforts.
