Text: Physics (Volumes II), 4th Edition, by James S. Walker

Course Description: Physics 123 is the third course of a three-quarter, algebra-based introductory sequence
in physics. This quarter the primary content is electricity & magnetism, DC & AC circuits, electronics
(chapters 19 25) and atomic & nuclear physics (chapters 29 32).
Course Prerequisites: Physics 122 and 122L
Course Corequisites: Physics 123L (General Physics Lab)
Class Notes:
The notes for each class will typically be presented in Powerpoint format. The Powerpoint presentations will
all be available prior to class on the Blackboard site.
Grading:
Quizzes - 30%

Midterm - 30%

Final - 30%

Homework 10%

Final grades will be based on the following scale:

98.5 100 % (A+)
91.5 98.4% (A)
89.5 91.4% (A-)

88.5 89.4% (B+)

81.5 88.4% (B)
79.5 81.4% (B-)

78.5 79.4% (C+)

71.5 78.4% (C)
69.5 71.4% (C-)

68.5 69.4% (D+)

61.5 68.4% (D)
59.5 61.4% (D-)

Homework:
Several problems will be assigned from each section of the book. Homework is your chance to practice and
review the concepts we covered during class. If you dont understand the homework, you will have a hard
time with the quizzes and test. I will provide solutions to all assigned problems on Blackboard. In addition,
there will be several extra credit problems provided prior to each quiz. Students should also read the material
on the schedule prior to that class period.
Quizzes:
There will be four quizzes during the quarter. Make up quizzes will not be allowed. The lowest grade quiz
will be dropped. The quizzes will typically involve solving several problems similar to the homework
problems. An equation sheet will be provided.
Midterm and Final Exams:
In class closed book exams with an equation sheet to be provided.
Academic Integrity:
Cheating in any form is not tolerated and may result in a failing grade for the class. Students are expected to
be familiar with the university policy on academic integrity.
