L
ife, at its core, is an endless
stream of choices. Your brain’s
most important function is to
separate the successful choices from
the failures. This is true for every
member of the animal kingdom; from
humans to fruit flies. Making the
wrong choices means extinction, or at
least lousy singing. These choices in-
clude conscious ones like deciding on
the best songs to sing and unconscious
ones like when to blink. Some choices
were made for you before you were
born. The DNA in your genes dictated
the size of your larynx, based on the
mating choices made down your fam-
ily tree. Obviously, your time is bet-
ter spent focusing on the things you
can change. But the first step is often
missed by those anxious to improve
– choosing to sing better.
This may seem like a strange concept.
If it’s that simple then why don’t more
people just choose to sing better? They
could, but most people assume a desire
is the same as a choice. It is not. A de-
sire is a hope that things will improve.
It’s passive. A choice is an action for
change. You’ve already separated
yourself from those who simply desire
to sing better by making the decision
to read this article. What’s ahead of
you now are many additional smaller
choices; each another step towards
better singing. Most of these choices
have been invisible to you in the past. I
know it seems that your jaw just tenses
on its own when you reach for a high
note – it’s not like you asked it to. Yet
your brain does, in fact, choose to
turn on that tension every single time.
Exposing those unconscious choices,
and taking the effort to correct them
is how you will eventually rise above
the effort of singing and perform from
a completely different mindset.
What researchers have discovered is

doesn’t care what it’s being used for,
just as your brain doesn’t care that
you know the difference between a
hypo and hyper active thyroid or that
the Yankees won the 1956 World Se-
ries with the only perfect game ever
pitched in post season. Nor does your
brain care how well you sing. There-
fore, it is your mind you’ll need to
reprogram so your brain is better able
to choreograph all of the various body
parts required for you to sing well.
Right now is as good of a time as any
to choose to sing better. Go ahead,
say it to yourself. Notice one of two
things: You either didn’t say it or you
did. If you didn’t say it I would like
you to forgive yourself for merely
reading this article and not choosing to
sing better and try it again. The rest of
us will wait. Okay, now notice one and
only one thing: Nothing happened!
That’s right, no profound sensation, no
fireworks and your singing certainly
isn’t any better then it was a moment
ago. That’s because you simply made
a statement – and talk is cheap.
To really choose to sing better means
taking action in that direction. The
result you want becomes a corner-
stone that guides all other actions and
choices to come. Brick by brick you’ll
build yourself a heightened ability to
sing. Each brick is a mere split-second
reaction going on in the brain. As you
connect more and more of these reac-
tions together, operating them in sync
with the result you chose, your voice
will behave as a perfect representative
of your spirit. It will broadcast to the
world every little thought and emotion
you are experiencing at that moment.
People will call you a great singer.

New Wednesday Night Karaoke Hot Spot
Last Wednesday night I decided to
have a burger at Agave Bar & Grill.
It’s located inside the clubhouse of our
local golf course, Angeles National
Golf Club, in Sunland. To my surprise
they were having Karaoke. A young
woman was on the stage singing op-

singer sang “Thriller” by Michael
Jackson. Incredible! This couldn’t
really be Karaoke…could it? They
were so good! I finished by burger
and found myself staying for another
3 hours enjoying singer after singer.
The show is run by TJ Entertainment
Productions and hosted by Valerie and

to do shows in the 1990s under the
same business name and are now back
together at the Agave. Back in the day,
they were renowned for their phenom-
enal sound and style of hosting.
They still have that terrific sound sys-
tem and vast song selection but this is
Karaoke with a twist. Pat and Barbara
Dempsey, owners of TJ Entertain-
ment, are using the Karaoke venue
to help promote aspiring singers and
musicians. “I think Karaoke is a won-
derful avenue to bring people of all
backgrounds and ethnicities together.
We want to take Karaoke to the next
level,” says Barbara. Celebrities and
industry pros are coming in to hear
and critique the singers. Dot Todman,
vocal coach to American Idol con-
testants, Masahiko Kaneko-a music
recording executive, and Jacques Cas-
tro, a manager and talent agent, were
recently reviewing the show.
TJ Entertainment holds weekly audi-
tions during regular Karaoke for their
end of the month showcase, held the
last Wednesday of the month. Three
talented singers are featured dur-
ing the Dinner Showcase starting at
7:30pm. The showcase gives sing-
ers the opportunity to invite family
and friends as well as talent agents
and managers in the recording, film

perform live. November’s showcase
entitled “Perfect Gentlemen” featured

performing at the Hollywood Bowl.

of the “A Night Under the Stars”
project says, “We are very excited
about the Hollywood Bowl project. It
will be the first of its kind nationwide
with annual shows to follow. Each
year will be bigger and better. I first
thought of the idea after visiting the
Hollywood Bowl for a jazz concert.
I thought that it would be a wonder-
ful experience for an aspiring singer
to be able to perform under the stars.
And what a boost to their resume! I
shared this with Barbara, she agreed,
and we were on our way.” Barbara
states, “It’s a huge undertaking but we
have teamed up with the right people
and sponsors and things are moving
forward as scheduled.”
TJ Entertainment Productions is pro-
viding a tremendous opportunity to
aspiring singers and musicians to per-
form in front of a live audience. They
are using Karaoke as the stepping-
stone to help keep dreams alive.
Agave Bar & Grill has good, reason-
ably priced food and great drink spe-
cials ($2 draft beer on this particular
Wed night.) It’s a beautiful, unpre-
tentious, upscale location. The golf
course is open to the public. I may
not be a golfer but I will definitely be
coming back for dinner on Wednesday
Karaoke nights.

a huge part of what happens regularly
at the Palos Verdes Bowl in Torrance.
Of course, Willie Corso,
P.V. Bowl’s Bar Manag-
er certainly knows that,
too. Hats off to Willie!
Without him, Karaoke
at the Bowl may never
have been given a
chance. Willie saw
the potential in Ka-
raoke and jumped on
board to make it a success. He
helped promote and tended bar on al-
most every Karaoke night for the past
10 years, and has even been known
to sing one every
once in a while.
He has recently
retired and every-
one is sure going
to miss him.
But let’s not for-
get about Charlotte
Melsh, P.V. Bowl
manager, who was
the first KJ at the Bowl. Just one of the
many hats she continues to wear. P.V.
Bowl owner, George Brandt, has also
been a strong supporter of Karaoke at
the Bowl. He opened the doors and
staffed the Bowl around the clock for
five days straight to provide a place
to raise money for Hurricane Katrina
victims, while break-
ing the world record
for continuous group
Karaoke singing.
Now let’s talk about
the next ten years.

reputation of being one of the best Ka-
raoke venues in Southern California,
being nominated for “Venue of the
Year” at KaraokeFest for many years
and winner in 2006. The Bowl has
started a remodel which will include
a new stage, new plasma TVs, a new
large comfortable booth at the back
of the Karaoke room, “VIP” section,
a new DJ/KJ booth with easier access
for the costumers, a brand new touch
screen Karaoke system with green
screen capability and even a new pool
table and darts for the non-singers in
the bunch.

Let’s not forget about the
staff. The new bar staff
at Palos Verdes Bowl is
superb. Louise (the new
Bar Manager) is certainly not new to
the business. Growing up around the
family business has allowed her expe-
rience to bring fresh new ideas to the
Bowl. You’ll see live music along with
a lot of other fantastic entertainment
coming soon. She has also put her best
girls behind the bar on Karaoke nights
and even added a cocktail server when
needed, Stephanie (Friday
night) and Natalie (Saturday
night) have taken over with-
out missing a beat after Willie
retired. They are both loved by
all the regulars and strongly
support Karaoke.

Tony DeFazio is back hosting at
P.V. Bowl on Friday nights, where
it all began. Brand new on the scene,
KJ Jimmy D. brings his brand of host-
ing to the Bowl on Saturday nights. We

It is no secret that times are tough
and competition is fierce out there.
In a market like this the best defense
is going back to the basics (a good
offense). Pick up the phone; make
some calls to venues in your area.
They may be feeling the wrath of
the economy and may be looking for
ways to entice customers back into
their venues…alas, Karaoke nights!
Also make a true effort to keep in
touch with the venues you already
work at. Check often to see how
things are going. Offer special nights
or a contest to keep the Karaoke night
fresh. A good way to boost business
is to offer to make up flyers advertis-
ing that the venue does catering and
private parties for the holiday season
