2. Academic Content
Unit Description
This unit aims to present some techniques currently used on a large and complex scale in the scientific, business and administrative fields and to show how these are easy to
understand and employ on a small scale. Emphasis will be placed on problem formulation. Solution techniques will not be developed rigorously, but rather the student's intuition
will be appealed to. Topics include first-order linear difference equations (applications to finance and ecology), matrices (applications demographic and Markov), systems of linear
equations, graphical representation of functional relationships, and an introduction to calculus applications.
Learning Outcomes
1. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the topics covered.
2. be able to apply this understanding to problems in the areas covered.
Graduate Attributes
1. UC graduates are professional - employ up-to-date and relevant knowledge and skills
1. UC graduates are professional - use creativity, critical thinking, analysis and research skills to solve theoretical and real-world problems
2. UC graduates are global citizens - behave ethically and sustainably in their professional and personal lives
Personal Attributes
As students of the University they will develop the qualities of critical thinking, curiosity and reflective practice. They will use foresight, initiative and leadership, and be open to
alternative perspectives. As graduates, they will continue to learn and thrive in environments of complexity, ambiguity and change.

4. Unit Resources
The textbook
Scientific calculator. We recommend the Casio fx 82 AU Plus II calculator available for purchase (about $30) in the University bookshop. It has all the functions you will need
for this unit and many others. It also has statistical capability. Access to a calculator is assumed on Tests and on the Final Exam. Be aware that programmable calculators and
mobile phones are not permitted in Tests and the Final Exam. Nonprogrammable, scientific calculators only are permitted in these.
You will also need access to a computer with email, web browser and Adobe Reader (or other PDF reader software). The machines in the PC labs in Building 11 & the SRC are
suitable.

Will provide you with formative feedback as to how you are progressing. The three tests will be held during the normal lecture hour, Wednesday,
16:30-15:30 in 14B1 and will each be 50 minutes in duration. The permitted materials for each class test are:
1xA4 side of original handwritten notes,
a nonprogrammable, scientific calculator (assumed), and
a unannotated, non-electronic language dictionary.

Tutorial Quizzes
Due Date:Weekly
Weighting Percentage:15%
Addresses learning outcome(s):
1. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the topics covered.
2. be able to apply this understanding to problems in the areas covered.
Related graduate attribute(s):
1. UC graduates are professional - employ up-to-date and relevant knowledge and skills

Each week a set of tutorial questions will be given and many of them will be discussed during the Workshop. However, during the Workshop, one of these will be selected
for submission to your tutor and marked out of 5. The aggregate of these marks will contribute 15% toward the final assessment for the unit. Prior to the Workshop you
may be given an indication of which tutorial questions out of a list are likely to be nominated so these can be prepared by you beforehand. Your exercise for marking is to
be submitted to your tutor at the very beginning of the Workshop.
Mastery Test
Due Date:Week 4
Weighting Percentage:5%
Addresses learning outcome(s):
1. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the topics covered.
2. be able to apply this understanding to problems in the areas covered.
Related graduate attribute(s):

Even though the Verification Test contributes only 5% of the total assessment, you cannot obtain a passing grade in this unit without successfully
completing the Mastery Program which the Verification Test examines. The following criteria constitute successful completion of the Mastery Program:
Students must achieve at least 80% in the Mathematics Pathways module (i.e. the Mastery Completion test) to meet the pass requirements in this Unit.
Students may undertake the Mathematics Mastery Completion test any number of times to achieve Mathematical Pathways mastery. (Different values within
the problems are generated each time you undertake the test)
Students must sit for the supervised Mathematics Verification test which is a smaller version of the Mathematics Mastery Completion test.
Students for whom the Mathematics Verification test and Mathematics Mastery Completion test do not correlate will meet with their tutor to arrange a
follow-up Mathematics Verification test. Failure in this test will require a meeting with the tutor/Unit Convenor.
The Mathematics Pathways module comprisesthe minimum capability in entry level Mathematics required for a successful attempt at the required
Mathematics intrinsic to this Unit.
This Units Moodle site contains links to the Mathematics Pathways Module that operates via the Pearsons MyMathLab resources. Students must use this
module to gain access to the learning program and tests that are an essential part of this Unit.
Final Exam
Due Date:Exam period
Weighting Percentage:50%
Addresses learning outcome(s):
1. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the topics covered.
2. be able to apply this understanding to problems in the areas covered.
Related graduate attribute(s):
1. UC graduates are professional - employ up-to-date and relevant knowledge and skills
1. UC graduates are professional - use creativity, critical thinking, analysis and research skills to solve theoretical and real-world problems
The procedure described above for gaining a passing grade in this unit is contingent upon obtaining a satisfactory mark in the final exam. The notion of
satisfactory here is in part determined by academic judgment. However, if you score less than 30% in the final exam you are unlikely to be awarded a
passing grade in the unit regardless of your numerical grade.
The Final Exam will be 2 hours long, and will be held during the exam period at the end of semester.
The permitted materials for the final exam are:
2xA4 sides of original handwritten notes,
a nonprogrammable, scientific calculator, and
an unannotated, non-electronic language dictionary.
It is assumed you will have a nonprogrammable, scientific calculator at the exam.
Procedures (https://guard.canberra.edu.au/policy/policy.php?pol_id=3351)).
Assessment in this unit will mainly be via written tests and an exam. The only exception is the Mastery Completion Test which will be an on-line assessment item. The
instructions for submission of this on-line assessment will be indicated in due course.
Supplementary Assessment:
Refer to the Assessment Policy and Procedures (https://guard.canberra.edu.au/policy/policy.php?pol_id=3351).
Week 1 - Diagnostic Evaluation of Entry Level Mathematics Pearsons Site available via Unit Moodle site.
Weeks 1 6 Progress through online Mathematics Pathways module in Pearsons site.
End week 6 Undertake the Mathematics Mastery Completion test
(self-test - online) up to end of Week 6
Week 7 - Undertake the Mathematics Verification Test (invigilated/supervised)
6. Student Responsibility
6a Workload
The amount of time you will need to spend on study in this unit will depend on a number of factors including your prior knowledge, learning skill level and learning style.
Nevertheless, in planning your time commitments you should note that for a 3 credit point unit the total notional workload over the semester or term is assumed to be 150 hours.
These hours include time spent in classes. The total workload for units of different credit point value should vary proportionally. For example, for a 6 credit point unit the total
notional workload over a semester or term is assumed to be 300 hours.
6c Participation Requirements:
6d Withdrawal:
If you are planning to withdraw please discuss with your Unit Convener. UC College students must also seek advice from the College.
Please see Withdrawal of Units (http://www.canberra.edu.au/current-students/enrolmentinformation/determine_your_study_program_and_register_on_osis/withdrawal_of_units) for information on deadlines.
