Chinas state media has slammed the United States for assuming a leadership role of countering global terrorism its
comments coinciding with the high profile conference at the White House that the Obama administration has hosted.
A slew of commentaries, run by the state-run Xinhua news agency, timed with the summit on Countering Violent
Extremism, have attacked the U.S. for having a long history of cohabiting with extremist individuals and groups. On
the world stage, the United States has assumed anti-terror leadership since the deadly Sept. 11 attack in 2001, yet
underneath its glossy surface, Uncle Sam seemed to have a secret identity as a terrorist breeder, says one such writeup.
The Chinese argue that instead of assuming leadership, the fight against global terrorism must be U.N.-run, premised
on global cooperation, based on the United Nations Charter and a unified standard, is necessary to jointly secure
regional and global peace and security.
Questioning Washingtons credentials, one of the write-ups alleged that many of the founders of al-Qaeda were
trained by the U.S. government. It added: Among many perilous and brutal terrorist groups in the world which have
been backed by the U.S. government, al-Qaeda is the one particularly exemplary to show that the U.S. foreign policy
is based on realpolitik and the short-term pursuit of narrow interests.
Referring to the Islamic State (IS), the article accuses the U.S. of complicity in the dreaded groups rise. It points to a
report by Russia Today (RT), which quoted Jordanian officials as saying that the key members of the IS were trained
by the CIA and the Special Forces command at a secret camp in Jordan in 2012.
Elaborating the surge in the influence of the IS, which has been recently accused of beheading 21 Coptic Christians in
Libya, and stoking the flames of a religious war, the commentary observes that the IS militants drew much of their
fighting experience from the West-involved war in Syria, where the Western bloc has supported rebels in their efforts to
topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. It goes on to conclude: To admit it or not, Uncle Sam has effectively played
the role of a terrorist breeder, when the war in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria turned the region into a burning
battleground with no peace, security and stability in sight. Xinhua accuses U.S. intelligence agencies of ingratiating
with extremists beyond the Islamic world, and along a time-line that can be traced to the sixties.
