Lightbehavesbothasaparticleandasawave.SincethedaysofEinstein,scientistshavebeen
tryingtodirectlyobservebothoftheseaspectsoflightatthesametime.Now,scientistsatEPFL
havesucceededincapturingthefirsteversnapshotofthisdualbehavior.
Quantummechanicstellsusthatlightcanbehavesimultaneouslyasaparticleorawave.
However,therehasneverbeenanexperimentabletocapturebothnaturesoflightatthesame
timetheclosestwehavecomeisseeingeitherwaveorparticle,butalwaysatdifferenttimes.
Takingaradicallydifferentexperimentalapproach,EPFLscientistshavenowbeenabletotakethe
firsteversnapshotoflightbehavingbothasawaveandasaparticle.Thebreakthroughworkis
publishedinNatureCommunications.

WhenUVlighthitsametalsurface,itcausesanemissionofelectrons.AlbertEinsteinexplained
this"photoelectric"effectbyproposingthatlightthoughttoonlybeawaveisalsoastreamof
particles.Eventhoughavarietyofexperimentshavesuccessfullyobservedboththeparticleand
wavelikebehaviorsoflight,theyhaveneverbeenabletoobservebothatthesametime.
AresearchteamledbyFabrizioCarboneatEPFLhasnowcarriedoutanexperimentwithaclever
twist:usingelectronstoimagelight.Theresearchershavecaptured,forthefirsttimeever,a
singlesnapshotoflightbehavingsimultaneouslyasbothawaveandastreamofparticlesparticle.
Theexperimentissetuplikethis:Apulseoflaserlightisfiredatatinymetallicnanowire.The
laseraddsenergytothechargedparticlesinthenanowire,causingthemtovibrate.Lighttravels
alongthistinywireintwopossibledirections,likecarsonahighway.Whenwavestravelingin
oppositedirectionsmeeteachothertheyformanewwavethatlookslikeitisstandinginplace.
Here,thisstandingwavebecomesthesourceoflightfortheexperiment,radiatingaroundthe
nanowire.
Thisiswheretheexperiment'strickcomesin:Thescientistsshotastreamofelectronscloseto
thenanowire,usingthemtoimagethestandingwaveoflight.Astheelectronsinteractedwiththe
confinedlightonthenanowire,theyeitherspeduporsloweddown.Usingtheultrafast
microscopetoimagethepositionwherethischangeinspeedoccurred,Carbone'steamcouldnow
visualizethestandingwave,whichactsasafingerprintofthewavenatureoflight.
Whilethisphenomenonshowsthewavelikenatureoflight,itsimultaneouslydemonstratedits
particleaspectaswell.Astheelectronspassclosetothestandingwaveoflight,they"hit"the
light'sparticles,thephotons.Asmentionedabove,thisaffectstheirspeed,makingthemmove
fasterorslower.Thischangeinspeedappearsasanexchangeofenergy"packets"(quanta)
betweenelectronsandphotons.Theveryoccurrenceoftheseenergypacketsshowsthatthelight

onthenanowirebehavesasaparticle.
"Thisexperimentdemonstratesthat,forthefirsttimeever,wecanfilmquantummechanicsand
itsparadoxicalnaturedirectly,"saysFabrizioCarbone.Inaddition,theimportanceofthis
pioneeringworkcanextendbeyondfundamentalscienceandtofuturetechnologies.AsCarbone
explains:"Beingabletoimageandcontrolquantumphenomenaatthenanometerscalelikethis
opensupanewroutetowardsquantumcomputing."
