MCC hosts Michigan’s
‘First Gentleman’ Dan
Mulhern

Community College hosts a
presentation by Michigan’s
First Gentleman Dan Mulhern
from noon to 2 p.m. Jan. 28 at
the M-TEC in Greenville.
During his presentation,
“Change: Leading Across
Trembling Ground,” Mulhern
speaks to the everyday
leader and offers strategies
to improve leadership
skills, achieve results and
gain greater professional
satisfaction. The presentation
is free, but registration
is required by calling the
M-TEC at (616) 754-7706.
A limited number of boxed

each and must be ordered
when registering for this
presentation.
As Michigan’s first “First
Gentleman,” Mulhern is a
champion for the cause of state
volunteerism and community
service, as chairman of the
Michigan Community Service
Commission (MCSC). He is
an accomplished leadership
coach and organizational
development expert and is
using those skills to guide the
Office of Great Workplace
Development, whose aim is to
make the State government
a “great place to do great
work.” He has similarly taken
on the lead role in promoting
the practices of Michigan’s
companies recognized as
“great companies to work for.”
MCC Director of Workforce
Development Leslie Wood
recently heard Mulhern speak.
“I was energized by his
approach to the belief that
everyone can impact their
community by realizing their
leadership strengths,” Wood
said. “We are all leaders and
we all have the potential to
use our strengths to help our
communities grow and thrive
in today’s uncertain economy.”
Mulhern is a prolific public
speaker and recently published
a book titled “Everyday
Leadership: Getting Results
in Business, Politics and
Life.” This book illuminates
leadership lessons that help
everyday people lead better
every day. He shares his
personal experiences as he

writes about real people as
leaders. In his stories, Mulhern
explores and discusses both
successful strategies and
various misconceptions he
has observed in leadership

that stimulates the thought
and development of leaders

Census confusion could
cost Michigan funding
From Staff Reports
MECOSTA – Those who live
in Michigan six months or
more out of the year should fill
out their 2010 census forms
when they return to the state,
according to the Mecosta
County Commission on Aging.
The census information is set
to be distributed in February
and March, when many
“snowbirds” are already at
their southern addresses.
Just write “usual residence
elsewhere” on the document,
and return it without
completing the information,
reported the Area Agency on
Aging of Western Michigan.
Those who live in Michigan for
six months or more will have a
form mailed to their Michigan
address. They can fill out that
form when they return to their
northern home.
Because federal funding to
state and local entities are
based on census populations,
uncounted people could cost
the state millions.
It is a situation that could
be very costly for Michigan’s
senior services, said AAA
Executive Director Tom
Czerwinski. This could reduce
funding for the state at a
time when state dollars are
decreasing.
Keep Germs from
Invading Your Home
(NewsUSA) - If your home is
your castle, you need to defend
it from the invading hoards --
of germs, that is.
Family members can pick up
germs, such as disease-causing
fungi, protozoa, bacteria
and viruses, anywhere and
at any time. Germs can be
transfered from work, your
child’s daycare or a cough from
a stranger on a bus. And once
one family member becomes
ill, the whole house may very
well succumb to infection.
You can’t disinfect the whole
world, but you can take
steps to keep disease from
penetrating your home’s
borders. Luckily, one of the
best ways to stop germs is also
one of the easiest -- wash your
hands with soap and warm
water for 15 to 20 seconds
frequently throughout the day.
Teach children to wash their
hands for the correct amount
of time by asking them to
scrub for as long as it takes
to sing the “Happy Birthday”
song twice. If you’re not near
a faucet, use hand-sanitizing
wipes or gels to clean your
hands.
Take care not to touch your
eyes, nose or mouth -- it’s
an easy way to transport
germs from surfaces like door
knobs and keyboards to the
areas of your body that are
most susceptible to invasion.
Instruct your children to
avoid touching their faces,
but do remember that kids
will be kids -- they’re going
to wipe their noses and rub
their eyes sooner or later.
You can, however, kill germs
in the eyes or mouth before
they cause sickness. Try using
a non-alcohol anti-germ
spray, such as McClyns (www.
mygermspray.com). The gentle
formula can be sprayed into
the eyes, nose, mouth or any
other entry point, such as a
small cut or abrasion, to kill
more than 60 pathogens by
99.9 percent. Using the spray
after sitting next to a coughing
co-worker or after your kids
come home from school will
keep germs from crossing your
threshold.
If someone in your home does
get sick, make sure that they
stay home until they’re no
longer contagious. That way,
you won’t unwittingly cause
others to bring germs into
their own homes.

Enjoy Pregnancy Without
Foot Pain
(NewsUSA) - Pregnant women
often complain about aching
feet -- and for good reason.
Weight gain, swelling and foot
instability increase during
pregnancy, causing soreness.
Modern women also stay active
longer into their pregnancies,
putting more strain on their
feet.
“In the last five years, I’ve
seen an increase in pregnant
women with foot pain because
more women than ever before
are active, even running
marathons, during their
pregnancies,” says Marybeth
Crane, DPM, FACFAS, a
Dallas-area foot and ankle
surgeon.
But according to the American
College of Foot and Ankle
Surgeons (ACFAS), no woman
has to endure sore feet during
pregnancy -- the pain can
be treated. ACFAS offers
the following guidelines for
alleviating foot problems
related to pregnancy:
* Painful, Swollen Feet.
Pregnant women often
experience throbbing, swollen
feet due to excess fluid, or
edema, in the feet, caused by
the weight and position of the
baby. To reduce swelling, put
your feet up whenever possible,
stretch your legs frequently,
wear wide, comfortable shoes
and don’t cross your legs when
sitting.
* Arch Pain. Fatigue can cause
arch pain, as can a condition
called “arch fatigue” or “over
pronation,” in which the
arch flattens. Over pronation
happens when the ligament
that holds up the arch of the
foot faces extreme stress. To
prevent arch pain, stretch daily
every morning and before and
after exercise, don’t go barefoot
and wear supportive low-
heeled shoes.
* Foot Cramps. Pregnancy
increases blood volume and
progesterone levels, which
often result in cramping.
Increasing circulation to your
feet will help -- try rotating
your ankles and elevating your
feet while sitting. If cramps
persist, try a walk around the
block. Stretch your calf muscles
daily.
* Ingrown Toenails. As your
feet swell, your shoes get
tighter -; and tight shoes can
cause painful ingrown toenails.
Wear wider shoes during
your last trimester to avoid
ingrown toenails. If you do
experience an ingrown toenail,
seek treatment with a foot and
ankle surgeon. Trying to fix it
yourself can make the problem
worse.
You might need to buy new
shoes even after the baby is
born. “A permanent growth
in a woman’s foot, up to half a
size, can occur from the release
of the same hormone, relaxin,
that allows the pelvis to open
to deliver the baby.” says Dr.
Crane. “It makes the ligaments
in your feet more flexible,
causing feet to spread wider
and longer.”
