Insulator are available. For example, washing with water or wiping with a cl o t h during
shutdown.
Adopt a n y method as appropriate for the actual situation. From the
standpoint of accident prevention, it is essential to periodically check whether or not the
arrester has sufficient o p e r a t i o n a l capability. There are v a r i o u s m e t h o d s o f checking
arrester ability to perform as shown below:
- Measurement of insulation resistance.
- Leakage current measurement through arrester.

4.2.1 Insulation resistance measurement with a meggar
Arrester degradation could happen by moisture ingression.

Resistance by a
meggar.

When using a meggar, take measurements periodically and

record the
atmospheric condition also (temperature and humidity).
Note :
a) Switch Off line and discharge the HV terminals before
meggarlng.
b) Clean the surface of the porcelain and take measurements on

meggar to reduce the influence of humidity
Allowable ranae of Insulation resistance Is not less than 1,000 M Ohms.

4.2.2 Maintenance in Heavily Polluted Area

Regular cleaning is essential depending on the degree and type of
pollutant.
To ensure that contamination on porcelain insulators on each arrester Is held
within the limit guaranteed by each arrester, wash or clean the porcelain
insulators by referring to the results of measurements taken periodically on sample
porcelain Insulator.
4.2.3 Over Voltages
Over voltage of any nature above the level guaranteed should not be allowed.
When conducting withstand voltage tests of equipment or devices other than
arrester, by charging voltage over the normal operation voltage, disconnect the
arrester from the circuit.
Note: Remember, voltage higher than MCOV for a long period of time adversely affect
the zinc oxide blocks, resulting in degradation of its characteristics.
