Japanese architect Shigeru Ban won the Pritzker Architecture Prize, world's most
prestigious architecture award, for the year 2014. He won the award for his creative
and inexpensive designs for disaster relief shelters.

Indian American novelist Jhumpa Lahiri's 'Lowland' was shortlisted for 2014
Baileys Prize, the UK's only annual book award for fiction written by a woman.

Karnataka musician Mathangi Sathyamurthy was selected for M S Subbulakshmi


Award 2014, announced by the M S Subbulakshmi Foundation.

British-American physicist Stuart Parkin won Millennium Technology Prize 2014 for
discoveries leading to a thousand-fold increase in digital data storage on magnetic
disks.

Famous Poet, Director and Lyricist Gulzar was been chosen for the prestigious
Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2013. He was earlier awarded the Sahitya
Akademi Award in 2002 and the Padma Bhushan in 2004.

India-born poet Vijay Seshadri won the prestigious 2014 Pulitzer Prize in the poetry
category for his collection of poems '3 Sections'. The 98th annual Pulitzer Prizes in
Journalism, Letters, Drama and Music were announced by Columbia University.

Randstad awarded the Global software giant Microsoft as the most attractive
employer in India for the fourth consecutive time followed by Sony India as the
2nd position. The award was won by Microsoft for the fourth consecutive year.

Caparo Group founded by leading NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul won the
International Business of the Year award 2014 at the Asian Business Awards
Midlands in Birmingham.

Famous Hindi writer Vishwanath Tripathi received the prestigious Vyas Samman for
the year 2013. The literary prize carries a citation and a cash amount of 2.5 lakh

Union Government raised the number of workdays under MNREGA (Mahatma


Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005) from existing 100 days to
150 days effective from April 2014

Corporation Bank won the award for lending to MSE (micro and small enterprises)
and to micro enterprises from the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium
Enterprises (MSME) for 2012-13

The queen of Britain conferred the rank of Knight Commander of the Most Excellent
Order of the British Empire (KBE) on former chairman of the Tata group, Ratan Tata
on 10th April. This honour is one of the highest honours given by the queen to
civilians.

Indian Bank won the national award for excellence in lending to micro enterprises
for 2012-2013. This was the second time the public sector bank has won the award.

The Central government decided to hike interest rates on fixed deposit schemes
offered by post offices by up to 0.2% today. The interest rate on Public Provident
fund, PPF has been kept unchanged at 8.7%.

KS Popli took over as the Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Renewable
Energy Development Agency.

Assam has become the first state in India to observe State Child Protection Day on
4th March.

US First Lady Michelle Obama presented the International Women of Courage


Award to Indian acid attack victim Laxmi after she won the same for successfully
leading the campaign against acid attacks on women in India.

International Women's Day was celebrated (8th March) around the world.

The President of India gave Stree Shakti Puraskar to six persons for their
distinguished services for the upliftment of women on International Women's Day.
The awards are named after six legendary women of India, Rani Lakshmibai, Rani
Rudramma Devi, Kannagi, Rani Gaidinliu Zaliang, Rani Ahilyabai Holkar and Mata
Jijabai.

Akhilesh Gupta, head of the Climate Change Programme at the Department of


Science and Technology, was elected as President of the Indian Meteorological
Society for 2014-16.

Allahabad Bank appointed Rakesh Sethi as its new Chairman and Managing Director.
Before this he was an executive director at Punjab National Bank.

Soma Mondal was appointed as the new Director (Commercial) of Navratna PSU
National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO).

The US has lifted a ban on oil and gas giant British Petroleum which was prevented
from bidding for US government contracts after the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the
worst in US history.

India's largest bank State Bank of India launched a payment intermediary


christened as SBI ePay, which will facilitate e-commerce or m-commerce
transactions among merchants, customers and various financial institutions. With
this, SBI becomes the first lender in India to start its own online aggregator services.

Politician, animal rights activist and environmentalist Maneka Gandhi, was awarded
"Green Crusader of the Year Award" for her contribution towards protection of
animals.

Prasoon Joshi, executive chairman & CEO McCann World Group India & presidentSouth Asia received the "Green Agency of the Year award" and "Campaign of the
Year Award" for its "Wake up, Clean up" project.

Gujarat was been ranked No 1 in terms of 'economic freedom' in a list of India's 20

The government launched an exchange-traded fund of central public sector


enterprises in order to raise Rs 3,000 crore for its disinvestment plan. This is an
open ended scheme, comprising of shares of 10 central PSEs including ONGC, GAIL
India and COAL India. It tracks an index fund, but trades like a stock on the
exchange.

Physicist Prof. Rajesh Gopakumar has been selected for the 23rd G D Birla award for
scientific research for the year 2013. He is presently working as a theoretical
physicist at Harish Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad and has made important
contributions on topics in quantum field theory and string theory

Indian journalist Shubhranshu Choudhary for his continuous effort to use the
internet and the mobile phone network to get voices of tribals from deep inside the
forests of Chhattisgarh across to the world outside in the local Gondi language, was
awarded a prestigious award for digital activism at the Barbican in London.

President Pranab Mukherjee gave away gallantry awards to defence personnel for
their distinguished services this week. 15 personnel were conferred Param Vishist
seva medals at a Defence Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
o Three Kirti Chakra awards were also given and the recipients are Lt
Commander Abhilash Tomy, Major Mahesh Kumar and Wing Commander
Darryl Castelino. Castelino was awarded posthumously for his role in
operation Rahat in Uttarakhand where his chopper crashed with 20
personnel on board after he had helped in rescuing lives of more than 80
people.
o Mahesh Kumar of Punjab Regiment got the award for his gallant acts in
counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir where he killed 4
terrorists in three separate incidents. Caption Abhilash Tomy received the
Kirti Chakra for completing world voyage on his sail ship non-stop and
without any external support in 151 days.

Famous Hindi author Govind Mishra was chosen for the Sarawasti Samman for the
year 2013 for his book Dhool Paudho Par which was published in 2008.

Bank of India launched Instant Money Transfer (IMT) scheme in Mumbai. This
scheme allows customers to withdraw cash without using either debt card or credit
card at the ban's ATMs which are enabled with IMT facility.

India successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable surface-tosurface Prithvi II missile with a range of 350 km, from a test range at Chandipur,

near Balashore in Odissa. The missile is capable of carrying 500-1,000 kg of


warheads.

Ajay S. Shriram, Chairman and Sr. Managing Director of DCM Shriram Ltd, was
elected as the President of CII for 2014-15. He succeeded S Gopalakrishnan of
Infosys.

Noel Naval Tata, brother-in-law of Tata Sons Chairman Cyrus Mistry, took over as

Mining giant Vedanta Resources group firm Sesa Sterlite appointed non-executive

New Zealand was ranked at No1 position among the 132 countries on the list of the
Social Progress Index 2014 compiled by US-based non-profit group Social Progress
Imperativ; in April 2014

India successfully launched the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C24 carrying
regional navigational satellite IRNSS 1B from the Sriharikota space station.

Indian PSU Company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) received the honour of
the most efficient Navaratna award for the year 2013.

World Health Day is celebrated on 7th April across the world to mark the
anniversary of founding of WHO in 1948.

Itanagar, Capital of Arunachal Pradesh, was placed on India's railway map with the
launch of first passenger train.

India successfully test fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Agni-I


ballistic missile with strike range of 700 km from a test range off Odisha coast on
yesterday night as part of a user trial by the Army. The key aim was to test its
success at night.

Admiral Robin K Dhowan took over as the Chief of Naval Staff.

Justice G Rohini has taken over as the first woman Chief Justice of Delhi High Court.

President of India Pranab Mukherjee conferred gallantry awards on 55 defence


personnel for their distinguished service and bravery. The awards include three
Kirti and nine Shaurya Chakras. Two Kirti Chakras were given posthumously to
Constable Brighu Nandan Choudhary of 205 Cobra Battalion, CRPF and Inspector
Lohit Sonowal of Assam Police for valiantly gunning down terrorists. Three Uttam
Yudh Seva Medals were given to brave soldiers.

India successfully test-fired its first indigenously-developed air-to-air missile 'Astra'


from a Su-30 combat aircraft.

President Pranab Mukherjee launched India's own payment gateway 'RuPay' today
which is equivalent of Visa and Mastercard and which works on ATMs and merchant
outlets like other Visa and Mastercard.

India's capital Delhi has been ranked as the most polluted city the world, as per a
new study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO). The air in the
national capital is filled with dangerous small particles of pollution

According to China-based research firm Hurun's 2014 global rich list, Bill Gates was
ranked as the richest person in the world with total fortune of USD 67 billion. He
was followed by Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffett (2nd) with a personal wealth
of USD 64 billion and Amancio Ortega of Inditex at 3rd rank with USD 62 billion
fortune. Carlos Slim Helu & family was ranked at 4th (USD 60 billion) while Oracle's
Larry Ellison was ranked at 5th position (USD 60 billion) in the same list.

According to China-based research firm Hurun's 2014 global rich list, Mukesh
Ambani was ranked as India's richest person with personal fortune of USD 18 billion
and ranked at 41st in the global list. Lakshmi Mittal is ranked at 2nd (Globally
49th with total fortune of USD 17 billion) and both Dilip Sanghvi of Sun
Pharmaceutical Industries and Wipro's Azim Premji were ranked at
3rd position (globally 77th with total fortune of USD 13.5 billion) in the same list.
Tata Sons' Pallonji Mistry ranked at 5th (Globally 93rd) with a personal wealth of $12
billion and SP Hinduja & family was ranked at 6th (globally 93rd) with a net worth of
$12 billion in the same list.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates regained No 1 rank in the list of the world's richest
persons, as per the annual ranking of global billionaires published by the Forbes
magazine. His total net worth is estimated as USD 76 billion. He is followed
by Carlos Slim (USD 72 billion) who dropped to second place. Amanico Ortega,
Spanish clothing retailer is ranked 3rd (USD 64 billion) for the second consecutive
year followed by Warren Buffet (4) (USD 58.2 billion), Oracle founder Larry Ellison
(5) (USD 48 billion), Koch Industries CEO Chalres Koch and David Koch (6) (USD 40
billion), Sheldon Adelson (8) (USD 38 billion), Christy Walton & family (9) (USD 36.7
billion) and Jim Walton (10) (USD 34.7 billion.

The world's largest economy, USA continues to have the highest number of
billionaires, with 492. Europe secured second place with 468 followed by Asia with
444 billionaires. India has 56 billionaires, led by Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL)
Chairman Mukesh Amabani with a net worth of USD 18.6 billion.

Singapore topped the list of the world's most expensive cities to live in 2014 which
includes total 131 cities globally, as per the report published by the Economist
Intelligence Unit (EIU). Singapore replaces Tokyo, which topped the list in 2013 and
followed by Paris, Oslo, Zurich and Sydney, with Tokyo falling to sixth place.

India's Low-cost carrier SpiceJet has appointed R.Neelakantan as its Chief Financial
Officer (CFO).

Global Internet Company Yahoo acquired a startup company named 'Vizify' that lets
users create infographics and videos out of social data.

Global mining giant Vedanta Resources has appointed Es Rio Tinto Chief Tom
Albanese as its new chief Executive Officer executive.

The European Central Bank (ECB) kept its benchmark interest rate at record low of
0.25%, in March 2014

Global aviation giant Airbus opened an Indian subsidiary and restructured India
operations in order to consolidate strengths and capture the growing market. It has
created a fully owned subsidiary called Airbus India by grouping its activities in the
country. Srinivasan Dwarakanath is the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and
Charles Champion is the Chairman of the new entity. Airbus India will manage the
company's Indian footprint spread across several sites. It will have customer facing
centres in Delhi and Mumbai.

Max Life Insurance has tied up with Toyota Financial Services India Ltd to provide
insurance cover to car loan customers. This alliance was formed to provide
insurance cover for car loan customers of Toyota Financial Services under a Max
Life group product called Max Life Group Credit Life Secure

Crimea will formally applied to join Russia after its people vote to split from
Ukraine. More than 97% of voters supported leaving Ukraine to join Russia.

Tomas Halik, the Czech Czech public intellectual, Roman Catholic priest, and scholar,
won the Templeton Prize for 2014.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree that recognizes Crimea as a


sovereign state and part of Russia on 17th March 2014.

Online travel company Ibibo Group, that owns portals such as Goibibo.com,
redBus.in and Travelboutique acquired 51% stake in online bus tracking and
analytics platform YourBus.com. The deal value was not disclosed. Ibibo, which is
owned by South Africa based Naspers, had acquired RedBus for Rs 780 crore last
year.

Founded in 2011, Yourbus is a GPS-based tracking platform, which solves problems


for both bus travelers and bus operators. Bus travelers can access real time
information regarding the location of a bus on their mobiles as well as online. Post
this acquisition, IbiboGroup will integrate the YourBus platform with its existing
online travel portals, redBus.in and Goibibo.com.

Famous Indian author and journalist Khushwant Singh passed away in New Delhi in
March 2014

British retail giant Tesco announced forming of an equal joint venture with Trent
Ltd, a part of the Tata Group.

Maldives' President Abdulla Yameen's coalition won majority in parliament after


bagging 54 out of the 85 seats today.

Saugata Gupta was appointed as the Managing Director and CEO of Marico Ltd, a
leading FMCG company in the country.

Global social networking giant Facebook acquired virtual reality gaming startup
Oculus VR Inc for USD 2 billion. The deal includes USD 400 million in cash and about
USD 1.6 billion in shares of Facebook common stock.Oculus' virtual reality head set,
the Oculus Rift, has already received 75,000 orders, according to the website. The
headset is expected to be out in mid-2014. Last month Facebook acquired the
instant messenger WhatsApp for about $19 billion.

Vinita Bali stepped down as the managing director of Britannia Industries after nine
years at the helm. Varun Berry, earlier chief operating officer succeeded her.

Norway's ex-PM Jens Stoltenberg was been appointed as next secretary general of
NATO, the 28-nation military alliance.

France's president Francois Hollande has named Socialist leader Manuel Valls as the
new prime minister of the country.

Marie-Lousie Coleiro Preca was sworn-in as the President of Malta on 4th April 2014.
She replaced George Abela from Labour Party whose term was completed on
4th April. She is Malta's ninth President and the second female President.

Indian two pharma companies Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Ranbaxy


Laboratories Ltd announced a USD 3.2 billion deal in which Sun Pharma will acquire
100% of Ranbaxy in an all-stock deal.

Global Internet giant Google launched a new tool as part of its elections portal
offering google.co.in/elections', called Know Your Candidates'. The new tool
allowed citizens to access relevant information about political candidates contesting
from their constituency and their incumbent Member of Parliament.

ERP giant SAP's Indian arm, SAP India appointed Ravi Chauhan as its managing
director with immediate effect.

India Infoline Asset Management Company appointed Prashasta Seth as its Chief
Executive Officer.

India's Software industry body Nasscom appointed Cognizant India Executive ViceChairman R Chandrasekaran as its Chairman for the year 2014-15

Viktor Orban was re-elected as Prime Minister of Hungary for the second
consecutive term for four years.

IT Services Company Cognizant announced that it has entered into an agreement


with itaas to acquire the company. Itaas is a US-based digital video solutions firm
headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

Japan's NTT Docomo decided to sell its entire 26.5% stake in Indian mobile service
provider Tata Teleservices Ltd (TTSL) to exit from the Joint venture it entered five
years ago.

Global software major Microsoft completed its purchase of Nokia's mobile phone
business for USD 7.5 billion. The deal was delayed due to late regulatory approvals.
Post this, Nokia mobile phone production unit will be merged with Microsoft and it

will end an era of Nokia brand. Nokia's Chennai plant has been kept out of this deal
as its assets were frozen by Indian tax authorities due to tax dispute.

Finnish telecommunications equipment maker Nokia appointed India-born Rajeev


Suri as its President and CEO. Before that, he was leading Nokia Solutions and
Networks, the smaller network equipment unit of Nokia before the company sold its
handset business to software giant Microsoft in a USD 7.2 billion deal.

Liquor firm United Spirits Ltd appointed Anand Kripalu as the Chief Executive
Officer.

The Washington Post and the British-based The Guardian newspaper won a Pulitzer
Prize for public service for coverage of National Security Agency surveillance
programmes, based on documents from US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden.

Google announced its acquisition of Titan Aerospace, a maker of solar-powered


drones which can be used to boost Internet access to remote areas. Titan's drones
are able to run for five years at an altitude of some 65,000 feet (19,812 meters).
They can perform similar functions to geostationary satellites, but are less costly.
Google is also developing Project Loon, which uses large balloons for transmitting
Internet signals to regions that are not now connected.

US pharma major Pfizer's third attempt to acquire AstraZeneca failed as


AstraZeneca has rejected its offer of USD 106 billion.

Ford Motor promoted Mark Fields to chief executive officer from chief operating
officer in April 2014.

Internet giant Google acquired Rangespan, a UK start-up that uses data science to
help retailers determine which products to sell and when. Rangespan was founded
by former Amazon employees in 2011.

The opposition leader and Panama's vice-president Juan Carlos Varela won the
Presidential election in Panama held in 2014.

Ahmed Maiteeg was elected as Libya's new prime minister after receiving 121 votes
in parliament on 4th May. He was sworn in and given two weeks to form a cabinet.
He won against political analyst Omar al-Hassi.

ING Vysya Life Insurance Company changed its name to Exide Life Insurance after
Exide Industries acquired 100% ownership of the insurance company.

German drug maker Bayer acquired Merck & Cos consumer care business in a USD
14.2-billion deal after outplaying rival bidders

South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) won the national election
with a big margin in 2014

India's largest spirits manufacturer, United Spirits (USL), planned to sell its famous
Scotch whisky Company Whyte & Mackay (W&M) for USD 725 million to
Philippines-based brandy maker Emperador.

National University of Singapore tops the chart among 250 universities ranked by
QS Asia Pacific University Rankings in 2014, followed by Korea Advanced Institute
of Science and Technology and University of Hong Kong

Volvo Buses India appointed VRV Sriprasad as Managing Director

India's largest online retailer, Flipkart.com, acquired fashion e-retailer Myntra.com


for approximately USD 300 million. This is widely seen as consolidation phase of
India's e-commerce market after aggressive push by global e-commerce giant
Amazon. However, it is not yet clear whether Flipkart will acquire only the Myntra
brand or its overall operations.

Low-cost carrier IndiGo retained the top position in the domestic passenger aviation
market in April 2014 after securing 31.6% market share. The airline also carried
11% more passengers in April at 16.8 lakh compared to 15.1 lakh in the same month
last year.

Jacob Zuma was sworn in as South African President for a second term by Chief
Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng in Pretoria. His party, African National Congress won the
national election held in this month with 62% of votes.

Micromax appointed Vineet Taneja as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Global tech giant Apple Inc announced that it would buy Beats for about USD 3
billion.

India's largest private company, RIL announced that it would acquire control of
Network 18 Media and Investments Ltd, including its subsidiary TV18 Broadcast Ltd
for Rs 4,000 crore.

Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil El-Sisi is the President-elect of Egypt and will be
the new President of Egypt.

Payment services company MasterCard announced that it would acquire Punebased electronic payment software firm ElectraCard Services (ECS for an
undisclosed amount. This acquisition will help MasterCard to expand its product
offerings.

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan was presented the prestigious IAA Olive
Crown Awards, Asia's only green award for communication, organized by the Indian
chapter of International Advertising Association (IAA) for creative excellence in
communicating sustainability in Mumbai.

Bollywood Megastar Amitabh Bachchan was awarded with the India's Global Icon of
the Year award at the NRI of the Year awards in Mumbai.

Koyal Rana won the 51st edition of the FBB Femina Miss India 2014 crown after
defeating 24 other contestants from across the country.

Anand Gandhi's debut film Ship of Theseus was named the best feature film at the
61st National Film Awards and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was named as the best popular
film providing wholesome entertainment. Jolly LLB was named the best Hindi film.
Hansal Mehta was named the best director for Shahid, again a biopic on slain
