For Sincere Believers In a Young Universe

By Elton Camp

Creationists are persons who strongly assert that everything material

(heavens and earth) was made about six thousand years ago in six literal
days of 24 hours each.
In saying this, they think they are supporting the Bible, but they are not. The
first words of Genesis say In the beginning. How long ago that way isnt
explained, but it likely was 2.4 billion years for the earth, even as science
teaches. A careful reading of Genesis shows that the earth was a formless
mass, without life of any type. There was lots of material in orbit that
obscured the view of the sun and moon. Gradually, the earth cooled and
solidified and land appeared in the midst of water. The days of creation
are long periods of time of unspecified length. Evening is before Gods
purpose for each day was clear and morning is when it could be seen what
he had accomplished. In no way does this mean that they were 24 hour
days. Creationists cant rightly claim that was a literal evening and
morning since they assert that the sun and moon were created after the earth
so that there wouldnt have been evening and morning until they appeared.
Read Genesis chapter one and think about it.
As the earth gradually became suitable for life, plants appeared first and later
animals. This fits well with the fossil record and is in keeping with basic
biology. Humans appeared last of all which is also consistent with known
science.
Please notice that evening and morning isnt said of the seventh day.
Apparently, the day of rest is still continuing. In fact that it is continuing is
mentioned thousands of years later in the New Testament.
This could go on and on to prove that the earth is very old, not just six
thousand years, but here and now, I want to stick to one scientific argument.
Even the most rabid creationist is likely to concede that we know the
speed of light and that a light year is how far light travels in a year.
The nearest spiral galaxy is 2.5 million light years away. The fact that we
can see it means that at least that much time must have passed. If the
universe is only 6,000 years old, we would see only relatively nearby stars in

our own galaxy only--those no more than six thousand light years away. The
rest of the night sky would be black because light hadnt had time to reach
this planet. In fact, we can see countless galaxies that are much farther away
than Andromeda.

rebuttal, however. I believe in creation, but absolutely NOT in
creationISM.
