AAUWNATIONALCONVENTION

June 1821, 2015 | San Diego

LearnWhatItTakestoMakeaWomanLeader
March 13 2015 was the year that welcomed the most women in Congress ever, but womens representation is still dismal overall
in leadership realms, including politics and business. At our What Does It Take to Make a Woman Leader? plenary panel at the
2015 AAUW National Convention, well tackle important questions related to womens paths to leadership, how women are
treated once they become leaders, and how to empower women leaders in our local communities.
Join our moderator, Marianne Schnall, and our distinguished panelists as they discuss these topics and more.

Marianne Schnall
Marianne Schnall is uniquely positioned to steer our conversation. An accomplished
writer and journalist, Schnall has given her life to the advocacy of feminism and social
justice through her career as a media professional. Schnall has been featured in many
national publications and programs and is the founder and executive director of
Feminist.com.
Schnall is not only well-versed in these issues, but shes also connected with many of
todays prominent leaders, including Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinem, Nancy Pelosi,
Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, and more.
She has authored two books. Her newest, What Will It Take to Make a Woman
President? Conversations About Women, Leadership, and Power, explores the
obstacles that have held women back and what needs to change.

Don McPherson
Domestic violence prevention and feminism might not be the first things that come to
mind when you imagine a former NFL star. Don McPherson is on a mission to change
that: Hes spent more than 30 years using the power and appeal of sports to address
complex social justice issues.
McPherson has reached more than 1 million people through lectures, programs,
speaking events, and television appearances, partnering with organizations like the Ms.
Foundation for Women, the U.S. Department of Education and Department of Defense,
and the U.S. National Committee for U.N. Women. McPherson offers unique insights
about how to be a good male ally and what role men can play in empowering women.

Noorjahan Akbar
As a leader in Afghanistan, Noorjahan Akbar has steered several human rights campaigns, authored activism literature, and cofounded Young Women for Change, which focuses on fighting for gender equality and rights for women living in Afghanistan.
A 2012 NCCWSL Woman of Distinction and one of Glamours Top 10 College Women of 2013, Akbar studies journalism and
public affairs at American University in Washington, D.C. After graduating, she hopes to return to Afghanistan to continue making
change.

programs, college/university relationships,
