Even though still bundled up, Geoff and Melissa Ballenger of Moorestown enjoyed the warmer spring-like weather on Thursday, March

The Wesley Bishop Park in

Moorestown will be the place to
be on Arbor Day, April 24.
Moorestown will not only be celebrating its 25th year of being a
Tree City USA community, but it
is also where the 2015 State Arbor
Day Celebration will be held.
Moorestown hopes to plant
around 50 to 100 trees that day.
Im extremely proud that we
can bring the state celebration
here. Moorestown has been a
Tree City for 25 years. The whole
town believes in trees, and it is an
honor to have the celebration,
John Gibson, chairman of the
Moorestown Tree Planting and
Preservation Committee, said.
To help raise funds for those
trees, the committee is hosting a
fundraiser on Tuesday, March 24
with the Iron Hill Brewery, located at 124 East Kings Highway in

is one of her favorite things to
play on the harp. Recently, Dishong was inspired to turn her
love for music and using harp in
other genres into a CD.
Dishong will celebrate the release of her first CD, Little
Green Apples, with a concert at
the Moorestown Community
House Ballroom on Sunday,
March 22 at 3:30 p.m. This CD features her original pop-folk music.
The concert is free and open to all
ages.
This is where I live; this is
where I work; I wanted to have
the party somewhere where people could come and join in on the
celebration. Hopefully, people will
be excited and enjoy it, Dishong
said.
Dishong had been working on
the music and ideas for her CD
for years, but when she went to
record her CD at her home, things

werent sounding the way she

wanted. So she decided to go to a
studio to get the sound she was
dreaming of.
Her CD was recorded at Cedar
Street Studios in Philadelphia
and engineered/produced by Ted
Richardson of TED Audio. Her
harp is backed up by Darren
Keith on drums, her husband
Mark Dishong on keys, Michael
G. Ronstadt on cello, her daughter
Ellie Dishong on fiddle, James
Hamilton on percussion and
Richardson on keyboard bass.
Its kind of like my baby,
working on this for several years.
I finally found a place where the
producer was on board and excited about it. He helped me achieve
my vision, Dishong said.
All of her songs were written
on a mythological theme. She

Residents might be hearing

about a new Burlington County
program in the near future that
wants to promote local businesses. The county has created a program called Shop Burlington
County First, which encourages
businesses and residents to shop
local.
Moorestown Township Council
was given a presentation on the
program at the Monday, March 9
meeting by Dave Wyche, a sharedservices coordinator for the
Burlington County Office of Economic Development and Regional
Planning under the Burlington
County Bridge Commission. He
urged residents, businesses and

officials to make a pledge to shop

local and give the buy-local program a try.
If you were to spend $10 more
a month in a local business, it
would create a $20 million boost
to the local economy, Wyche
said.
Started in 2013, the programs
goal is to encourage businesses to
sign up and get residents to shop
at local stores. Its been a slow
start, which is why Wyche came
to the council meeting to try to
spread the word.
For a business to be accepted
into the program, the only financial requirement is for it to be a
part of the local business association. The Moorestown Business
Association has already accepted
the program, so members are en-

couraged to join. They just need

to go to the website at shopburlingtoncounty.com and sign
up as a member. When a business
signs up, it is automatically put
into the directory on the Shop
Burlington County First website.
Wyche is also encouraging the
public to be a part of the program. Members of the public can
visit the website and sign a pledge
to support local businesses. All
they need to give is their name
and email address. Every Monday, those who sign up will receive an email of the weeks Spotlight business. This business is
featured on the website and offers
a special discount or offer at the
business. As of last weeks meetplease see NEXT, page 14

As March blows in like a lion,
there are the subtle signs that
spring is fast approaching. With
intermittent warm days and flowers peeking out from under the
ice, registration for Parks &
Recreation spring programs is in
full swing! Our recreation nation
cant wait to welcome spring!
The longer days and the
warmer weather bring out the
best in everyone, and Parks &

For our youngest members,
there is Pre-School Ballet and Exposure to Sports. The outdoor

Want a lasting marriage?

The secret is simple get married, and live, in New Jersey
ver the last few weeks, you
may have read on this page
our request to have you send
in the story of your marriage proposal. March 20 is National Proposal Day,
and we are celebrating the under-theradar holiday by telling the stories
of marriage engagements of the members of this community.
Why do we do this? As one of our associate editors would say, we love
love.
And so, too, apparently, do plenty of
other New Jerseyans. A recently-released Census report shows that New
Jersey has the lowest percentage of
people who have married two or more
times. So, when we say I do, we tend
to mean it. Or, at the very least, we

dont intend to say it again if things

dont go right the first time.
Wed rather focus on that first point,
though. New Jersey has long held one
of the lowest, if not the lowest, divorce
rates in the nation, and experts are
never surprised to read this. Why? Because New Jersey residents typically
fall into categories that put them at a
lower likelihood to get a divorce:
We have a high level of education,
so we often delay marriage to a later
age, making us more emotionally and

financially stable. Money troubles are

a leading cause of divorce, and since a
good portion of our newlyweds are in
a better financial position than their
counterparts in the South and West
where divorce rates are higher we
tend to avoid the D-word.
Which circles us back to what were
really talking about here wonderful,
head-over-heels love.
We have already received plenty of
stories from the community about
their memorable engagement stories,
and we thank you for them. Your stories will be told in these pages in the
coming weeks. If you want to share
your stories with the town, please
send them in. We love love, all year

Police ask residents, businesses to register cameras

The Moorestown Police Department is
committed to the protection of our residents and business owners. Many business
owners and residents currently utilize surveillance systems. As crimes occur nearby,
they may not be aware that their cameras
may have captured video that could help
solve the crime. In turn, the department is
not always aware who may have this potentially vital information. Much investigative time can be wasted by officers going

door-to-door trying to track down potential

video evidence.
The police department is asking residents and businesses to register their privately owned surveillance camera systems
at Crime Reports utilizing the following
link: www.crimereports.com/camera_registration.
The site is secure and your information
is only accessible to law enforcement. Participants will be provided with a window

brate its accomplishments in

building a sustainable urban forest canopy and for being a Tree
City USA community for 25 years.
The event will be held rain or
shine.
I always say The best time to
plant a tree was 20 years ago. The
second best time is today. Trees
provide mostly good things. They
increase property value, provide
shade and create cleaner air.
Arbor Day is a good day to plant a
tree, Gibson said.
The whole idea and spirit of
Arbor Day is to remind everyone
to plant a tree because of the
many benefits of a tree for its lifetime. It will create a better environment for all of us, and for the
young it creates a wonderful

childhood memory that hopefully

gets passed along, Logue
said.
Although it is not final, there
are plans to include state, county
and township officials and have
speakers who will give a speech
and present awards. There will be
the planting of a ceremonial tree
as well. The committee is also
working with local schools to
bring children for possible poem
reading or musical entertainment. Refreshments, which are
donated by local businesses, will
be available, too.
Other than needing donations,
the committee is also asking for
volunteers to help plant the trees
it is able to purchase.
It will be a lot of fun that day.
Well hopefully have over 100 volunteers planting 100 trees,
Logue said.
We have all of the equipment.
People just need to show up and

help us plant, Gibson said.

The Give 20 Percent coupons
can be found on The Moorestown
Sun website at www.moorestownsun.com, and search Arbor Day
Fundraiser. Be sure to print it
before going to Iron Hill Brewery,
as the flyers will not be handed
out on the premises.
For those who just wish to donate, donations can be made by
sending a check to Moorestown
Tree Committee, 601 E. Third St.,
Moorestown, NJ 08057. Please
make checks payable to Township
of Moorestown marked for Arbor
Day 2015. If you would like to donate actual trees, please contact
the committee to coordinate delivery.
I encourage everyone to come
out on April 24, enjoy the celebration, plant a tree and help donate
to get a greater appreciation for
trees and what they do for our
community, Gibson said.

ing, there were 820 pledges.
New to the program are
Burlington Bucks Cards. It is the
same as cash, but in the form of a
gift card. Each card is worth $10
and can only be used at the businesses in the Shop Burlington
County First program. When the
money is used, the program reim-

burses the business.

They make great gifts, said
Wyche, who gives them to his son
to use in town.
The Moorestown Business Association has about $500 in
Burlington Bucks Cards and
there is a list online where you
can purchase them as well. There
are also window signs available
for businesses that say they sell
them there.
Members of the council
seemed in favor of the program.
Great program. Thanks,
Deputy Mayor Phil Garwood said.
I will remind everyone at the
Moorestown Business Association meeting to get into the directory, Mayor Victoria Napolinto
said.
In other news:
Members of the public came
before council during the workshop portion of the meeting to
discuss their thoughts on the
parking meters and kiosks.
Robert Paglee came before the
board giving it an example of

when kiosks had failed. He discussed his ownership/operation

of a large commercial building in
Mt. Holly during the 1990s and
how the parking meters and
kiosks installed, and subsequently removed, affected his property
and damaged many businesses.
He is in opposition to kiosks
being considered, feeling they
would wreck the Moorestown
business district just as he witnessed the wreckage they invoked
on Mt. Holly. No decision yet has
been made on the kiosks or meters.
Council unanimously approved an ordinance on second
reading authorizing Moorestown
to join the Burlington County Energy
Aggregation
Program,
which is expected to save
Moorestown residents a minimum of 5 percent in energy costs.
The next Moorestown Township Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 24 at 7:30
p.m. at the Town Hall with a 7
p.m. workshop.

Is it time to update that dated room?

Carpets

As an old married couple of 55

years, we are astounded at the
theatrical lengths to which
todays couples go to impress
their loves with spectacular public engagements. Ours was a bit
simpler.
As seniors in high school,
Baird and I were fixed up for an
almost-blind first date to the Haddonfield Memorial High School
senior prom; the almost is because we had known each other
slightly in junior high school, before my family moved to Indianapolis, Ind. When we made a
short visit back to New Jersey, he
was available because his band
gig had been cancelled. A mutual
friend arranged the date and it
was love at second sight. The
prom was Jan. 27, 1956. He was 16
and I was 17, and I knew he was
the one, even if he didnt.
During college, we maintained
a long-distance relationship between Rutgers University and DePauw University in Indiana, except for summers at the shore,
when the commute was easier.
We never actually dated, as our

limited time together was spent
at the home of one family or the
other, where he must have noticed that I did not cook. We
segued into the marriage question, knowing that that was what
we both wanted, without his making a formal proposal.

However, one hot and sticky

summer night before our senior
year of college, he stopped his car
in the Camden County Park
across the street from where I had
lived. He handed me a small
package. It contained Betty
Crockers Dinner for Two Cookbook, a prelude to the engagement ring that he then slipped on
my finger. He likes to plan ahead.
We were married soon after we
both had graduated from college
in 1960, and 55 years later, the
cookbook is worn, were well fed
and some nights he even fixes
dinner!

Dishong hopes music inspires

DISHONG
Continued from page 2
her in dreams and she was able to
make mythological connections.
Despite the stories being ancient,
Dishong felt the lessons myths
teach are still so relevant today
that anyone can connect to
them.
Its a timeless thing. People
often will overlook the old myths,
but they can be very current. Im
always finding inspiration in
reading old stories, Dishong
said. We are all fighting the
heros struggle in own way. We
can all learn from their struggles
and stories.
The launch party at the
Moorestown Community House
seemed to exactly fit Dishongs
want of having family and
friends come to celebrate and
enjoy her CD as well as other
members of the public. She wishes to share her love for music and
the harp in shocking genres with

others.
At the party, there will be
music from her CD as well as
cover songs. There will be
dancers from The Dance Lab in
Moorestown, desserts and apples
everywhere to go with the CDs
name. There will be no alcohol, so
people of all ages can come to
enjoy for free.
Dishong hopes those who listen
to her music feel inspired and empowered. Though the songs can
seem kind of sad, she would like
her audience to take away that
though life is hard at times, things
will get better as long as everyone
continues to try their best.
We all have our struggles, and
I think we can take away that
were all going through life, and it
can be challenging. But as long as
we persevere and do the best we
can, things will get better and life
will be good, Dishong said.
Little Green Apples can be
purchased at the release party or
at www.cdbaby.com. For more on
Dishong and her music, visit to
