Living Bravely: by Randy David
Reaction Paper
Realizations came across our minds about the simple yet very meaningful essay. In our world
today there are numerous arguments happening in terms of the different issues about human being.
We all know as individuals we are different from each other by our genetic codes and our own unique
characteristics which are our ability to think rationally, ability to interact with other people and making
relationships. As a human being, we are not only able to think rationally but also we have the
knowledge to decide and apply the things we learn into actions to reach our goals and to be a
successful individual. In order to reach our highest level of attainment which is success, we should
know morality and ethics. Today, morality and ethics are one of the common issues. Almost all of us,
including philosophers, are saying that morality is the same as ethics. But as for our group we see it
as different existing things. Morality and ethics are related to one another but have different
meanings. Morality consists of principles or habits with respect to right or wrong conduct. Why do we
do it? Because we believe in something being right or wrong. Meanwhile, ethics consists of rules that
we should follow. Ethics are dependent on others for definition. They tend to be consistent within a
certain context, but can vary between contexts. Again asking the same question, why do we do it?
Because society says it is the right thing to do.
The norms and standards of morality, ethics and politics are maybe ingrained in a society that has
gone beyond the basics of life, food on the table, education, employment, health, safety and security
of a family. We can dwell and apply in practice this morality, ethical norms and standards. Comparing
our existence in a world different as ours maybe a question mark until we achieve our basic needs.
Our society maybe educated, but only a portion is practicing these norms and standards. For the
thing that troubles us about the industrial economy is that it is not comprehensive enough, it tends to
destroy what it does not comprehend, and it is dependent upon things that does not comprehend.
National integrity is dependent upon ethical practice between people and business while it declines
so does the framework of human society. Given these things, philosophy will mean as much to us as
it does to philosophers.
In life, we ask questions to ourselves like how we must live for others or how we must live for
ourselves. The fact that we are born confronted with the standards and norms of the community, we
are being mold in a way that we could have been someone different from who we are now. We are
not being given a chance to choose freely because of this. We tend to become someone who will
question ourselves in the future. Living for others means that we have to be selfless and be someone
who prioritizes the needs of others before ourselves but choosing to live for ourselves does not mean
that we are against to anyone who opposes us but we just simply choose a path that we know that it
can make us truly happy.
We believe that each one of us has a choice in life in every little thing we do. We are driven up by
forces around us, whether we do this or that; various and numerous things like family, friends, and
self-consciousness on whether to decide things for yourself because you are afraid of what the world
would think of you if you would take the chance. Randy David discusses about how we should live
our life on how we would want it to be, not based on others would like us to do. In the article, Friedrich
Nietzsche was mentioned on discussing about how each one of us must create our own mode of life,
not based on past generations, or just be a merely act of duty. We should be pursuing things that we
want in life, not things that the society wants us to pursue. He also discusses how turning your back
against seductions of the marketplace and the political system, how it is rare to encounter people with

this kind of attitude. In our generation, many people are blinded by money and forget the actual
reason for doing things that they were trained for. They are blinded by their selfishness and selfinterest. It takes a tremendous courage to fight for something we know that we can make us be our
true selves when it seems like the world is against us. We salute those who have brave souls who go
through the battle even though they are against all the odds.
Freedom to choose is really important in our lives because it binds us into what we want to be or
what we want to happen. We have choices in life and it is our right to choose from them because it is
what builds us. Freedom to choose is our cornerstone in our calling because it builds a bridge where
we want to be.
We have different insights about life and how we are to build our own life. It is true that some of us
are forced to be in a state or situation that we do not like. If that is happening, it is similar to letting
people control us. We are not puppets to be controlled by people around us. If we are to choose who
we want to be in life, we should prove that what we wanted is for the good of all.
Lucky for people who are given freedom to choose because they can be who they want to be.
However, these people who have freedom should remember that the good must be done. They
should do what is right in order for them to respect their freedom. They should not abuse nor misuse
it because it has a bearing in their life. We must remember to make the right decisions that will make
us happy, because in the end it is what truly matters.
