Woodlawn shuts down Smith, Fair Park
By Kirk Copeland
Special to The Times

Woodlawns defense held Fair Park to

less than 200 total yards, and running
back James Anderson once again had a
banner night as the Knights celebrated
homecoming with a 28-20 District 1-4A
victory over the rival Indians Friday
night at Independence Stadium.
Both Woodlawn (4-5, 3-3 District 1-4A)
and Fair Park (6-3, 3-3) control playoff
destinies entering Week 10.
Anderson ran the ball 32 times for 155
yards and three touchdowns, including a
17-yard run with 1:30 left to seal a hardfought win for the Knights. The talented
senior, who started at quarterback for

Woodlawn last season, now has 12 rushing touchdowns on the season.

I wanted to do all I could to help my
team get a victory, said Anderson, who
cut back against the grain and broke four
tackles on his way to the clinching score.
We are a family on this team. When I
succeed, we succeed.
Andersons 32 carries were just six
less plays than Fair Parks entire offense
ran. The Indians finished with 191 total
yards on just 38 snaps as the Woodlawn
defense, led by ends Wesley Riser and
Jason Enriquez, put the clamps on quarterback SeDerrick Smith. Smith was
limited to 59 yards rushing and 109 passing, 60 of which came on one play that
ended with Corey Simmons losing a fum-

ble inside the Knights 10. Riser and Enriquez swatted down three of Smiths
passes at the line of scrimmage.
Our game plan was that we had to
contain SeDerrick, and we did a good job
of that (Friday), said Woodlawn head
coach Jerwin Wilson. Derwin (Wilson,
the Knights defensive coordinator) had
a good scheme against them, and our
players went out and executed it.
With Smith bottled up, the Woodlawn
offense helped out. Quarterback Treveion Youngblood had one of his better
games, completing 9 of 15 passes for 92
yards and a 12-yard touchdown to Riser.
I was in Tres ear all game, just telling him to keep himself settled down and
not try to do too much, said Anderson.

Im real proud of how he led us. We

needed a good game out of him (Friday).
Woodlawn had 21 first downs while
limiting Fair Park to just seven. Three of
the Indians first downs came on the final
drive of the game with the Knights holding a 14-point lead.
They just got after us on both sides of
the ball, said Fair Park head coach Mike
Greene. Theyre a big, physical football
team, and we just couldnt keep up (Friday).
Both teams wrap up the 2014 regular
season next Friday with playoff spots
and positioning on the line as Fair Park
welcomes North DeSoto to Independence Stadium while Woodlawn travels to
Messmer Stadium to face Loyola.

N. DeSoto posts
win over Loyola
By Jimmy Watson
jwatson@gannett.com

Obviously
relishing
the 20-3 win over a scrappy Loyola club, North
DeSoto coach Scott Abernathy postponed his postgame speech while his
team and supporters enjoyed the fireworks display just outside Messmer Stadium on Friday
night.
Abernathy was
grinning
ear-to-ear,
was
as
quarterback Delmonte
Scott
Hall, who
Abernathy
scored all
three of his
teams touchdowns in the
District 1-4A contest. It
was as if the explosion
was for the Griffins (7-2,
5-1), who can clinch at
least a share of the league
crown next week if they
can get past Fair Park.
It gives us an opportunity to go to Fair Park and
earn a high seed, so we
have a better chance of
advancing in the playoffs, Abernathy said.
This team has a chance to
do something special.
Weve had multiple years
in the playoffs, but we
want to advance further.
You
to
have
give Loyola
a lot of
credit.
They
played a lot
better than
Alan
we did for
Carter
most of the
night. We
were just able to make
some big defensive stops.
The Flyers (1-8, 0-6)
proved they were no pushovers, hanging with the
favored Griffins and still
with a chance to pull out
the win in the second half.
But Loyola was unable to
punch it in despite having
a first down inside the
North DeSoto 10 three
times in the game.
We are having trouble
in the red zone, making
mistakes that are costing
us, Loyola coach Alan
Carter said. But North
DeSotos defense made
some very good plays.
They blitzed us and we
didnt handle it well.
The Flyers took an
early 3-0 lead on their second series when Josh
Hawboldt booted a 24-

yard field goal. Hawboldt

would later narrowly miss
a 46-yarder, his first miss
of the season after hitting
8-of-8.
On their first drive of
the second quarter, the
visitors got the only score
they would need when
Hall capped an 80-yard
drive with a 1-yard
plunge.
Tonight was a big
night because it was a rivalry school, so we did
what we had to do we
came out focused, Hall
said. Our defense played
good. They had our backs
when the offense was
struggling. We always expect a physical game, but
that was a good defense
we faced one of the best
we faced all year.
The Griffins second
score came on their first
possession of the second
half on a drive that consumed half of the third
quarter. Hall made it 13-3
on a 9-yard scamper. Loyola looked as if it would
pull within a field goal
near the end of the frame
when the Flyers drove inside the 15. But a thirddown pass was intercepted at the goal line by Tim
Howard and returned 61
yards.
Our defense played
well enough tonight and
that was a big interception by Tim, Abernathy
said. It seems like every
game someone different
is stepping up every
game.
Hall finished with 92
yards on the night.
Delmonte is a super
athlete and he made two
solid throws tonight, Abernathy said. Hes just a
sophomore so he will keep
getting better and better.
Ray Shepherd turned
in a solid night for the Flyers with 59 yards mostly
on off-tackle plays. Under
duress throughout the
night, Loyola quarterback
George Bishop completed
four passes that went for
double-digit yardage.
Dennis Hall and Donald Rowlins also were solid for the Griffins with a
combined 59 yards.
The victory allowed
the Griffins to keep pace
with Benton and Minden,
who are also 5-1in District
1-4A. North DeSoto travels to Fair Park, Benton
travels to Huntington at
Lee Hedges and Minden
hosts Northwood.

Airline's Cameron Howell catches the ball for a touchdown during the first half of the Vikings win against Captain Shreve.

Vikes down Shreve

Airline defense dominates Captain Shreve in 1-5A victory
By Pesky Hill
Special to The Times

Harvey
Calhouns
9-yard
touchdown reception just before
halftime gave Airline just the
breathing room the Vikings needed.
Then Airlines defense made
the difference as the Vikings
overcame two critical turnovers
to stop Captain Shreve 26-16 in a
District 1-5A football game at Lee
Hedges Stadium on Friday.
Calhouns catch came with just
21 seconds left in the second quarter as quarterback Noah Hildebrand guided the Vikings 80 yards
in the last 3 minutes before halftime. That allowed the Vikings to
regain some momentum after the
Gators scored twice on defensive
touchdowns.
Our defense played tough all
night, said Airline coach Bo
Meeks. We had guys flying to the
football especially Tyler McCallister, Charlie Matthews and Deveal Granville.
Airline improved to 4-5 overall
and 2-2 in the district while
Shreve fell to 3-6 and 0-4.
The guys on our defense
stepped up tonight, Gators coach
Richard Lary said. We knew we
had to make some big plays on defense and we did. Our offense had
some good drives but we just
could not finish.

With Airline leading 20-0 after

one quarter, Shreve marched 74
yards on 11 plays. Airline held so
Chad Usry booted a 30-yard field
goal on the third play of the second quarter.
Solomon Burton made the first
big play for Shreves defense
when Burton picked up a Hildebrand fumble and raced 57 yards
for a touchdown. That came with
4:25 left before halftime and cut
Airlines lead to 20-9.
But the Gators defense struck
again on Airlines next possession
when Grant Ingram picked off a
Hildebrand pass. Ingram beat his
pursuers to the end zone for a 43yard interception return and
Shreve was within 20-16.
Thats when Meeks team put
together the critical drive just before halftime to get some breathing room.
Shuncee Thomas, the games
top rusher with 107 yards on 23
carries, got Airline on the scoreboard first with a 19-yard touchdown catch from Hildebrand in
the first quarter.
On Airlines next possession,
Thomas had a 14-yard scamper
just before racing 23 yards for a
touchdown that gave the Vikings a
14-0 advantage with 7:06 left in the
opening quarter.
The biggest offensive play of
the night came when Hildebrand
fired deep to wide receiver Cam-

eron Howell. Howell got behind

the Shreve secondary and collected the pass for a 67-yard score.
That gave Airline a 20-0 cushion.
Hildebrand, a sophomore,
completed 12 of 20 passes for 174
yards to provide balance for the
Vikings. Airline had 164 yards on
the ground.
We are excited to play a parish
rival, Meeks said of next weeks
regular season ending matchup
with Parkway. This was a good
win and we need to get ready for
Parkway.
