COMMENTS
On compiling this booklet, I have extended the answers in such a
way as to encourage natural and contextual flexibility. I have also
tried my best to keep the original questions though some of them
really need modifying as far as accuracy is concerned. Common
misunderstandings as well as advanced extensions will be
discussed as follows.
(1)

Can you find other derivations of mix in addition to mixer, mixup, mixed-up, mixture? Be able to find more than 5 derivations.
(Those with inflectional suffixes do not count.)
(2)

The stem should be angle instead of rectangle. However, this

may cause unnecessary difficulties for students if they do not know
(6)
the Latin root rect (straight or right), which also appears in .
Advanced English by blogchuyenanh 2014 | Page 2

(3), (4)

The Latin root scribere (write, as in script, describe,

inscribe) appears in many combinations. Be able to find more
than 15 derivations of this root. (Those with inflectional suffixes
do not count.)
(5), (8), (9)

Further discussions have been prompted in corresponding

posts or past papers.
(7)

The Latin root vore or vora (eating, feeding on) appears

only in combining forms, which means it does not exist as a word.
The question is aimed at testing the prefix omni- (everywhere,
all). The better stem should be voracious or voracity.
(10)

The stem should be distinct. Be able to tell the difference

between indistinguishable and undistinguished.
(11)

Though delete and deleterious bear a striking resemblance to

each other in spelling, they do not share the same root, nor do
they share any sense of meaning. deleterious by itself exists as
one word, while delete is derived from the Latin root delet
(effaced, blotted out). The question should be rewritten so as
not to cause misunderstandings for students. Be able to find
derivations of delete.
(12)

We accept the answer nauseous seeing that it is close in

meaning to seasick though they do not share much of the same
root. seasick is a combining form of sea and sick, either of whose
roots exists as a word. nauseous is derived from the Latin root
nausea (seasickness), which bears a similarity to seasick in
spelling, but nausea is derived from the Greek root naus (ship,
not sea). In short, seasick and nauseous may share a sense of
meaning, but come from slightly different origins.
(13)

Can well-earned be used in this context? Is the word earnest a

derivation of earn?
(14)

Can self-hardened be used in this context?
