THE VTR CUP – SAM 35 RULES, 2009 Onwards

OBJECTIVE :
To provide a set of rules to regularise the competition first held in 2000 which celebrated half a century of Team Racing in the UK. The
principle aim is to reproduce as closely as possible the conditions for racing which existed in 1950, hence only designs which were in existence
at that time are acceptable. Authenticity, period dress and race performance on a handicap basis will decide the winner

1/ Models shall be built to the approved list of designs which were existing prior to January 1951. Additions to the approved list may be
submitted with suitable evidence for approval. The models shall not be modified from the original design except for those mods necessary to
allow a different motor to be fitted to that shown on the plan.(Widening bearers, deepening cowl etc). Built up fabric covered wings must be as
shown but it would be acceptable to use spruce spars instead of balsa to give a safer structure.

2/ Engines shall preferably be of the same type as shown or mentioned on the plan, however similar engines of the period are acceptable eg to
use a Frog 500 for a K & B Torpedo 29 etc. More modern motors are acceptable but will lose judging points. Replicas of vintage engines are
also acceptable.

3/ Models will fly on 52’ – 6” lines of 0.015” dia for 5cc motors and of 0.013” dia for motors of 3.5cc or less.

4/ Models will be judged for finish and authenticity before flying their heats.

5/ Heats will be over 5 miles and will be flown 2 or 3 up depending upon pilot’s preferences.

6/ The clothing and equipment of the pilot & pit crew will be judged and will contribute to the overall result.

7/ The team with the highest overall score will hold the VTR Cup until the next SAM 35 Gala.

8/Race conduct is to be as near original as possible. There will be no catching of models, which will be pitted where they come to rest after
landing. The start will be a Le Mans type, where, when the race is started, the pit man will run to his model.

POINTS SCORING :
Model : 100 points max, divided into 80 for construction and finish, 20 for the motor.
Flying : 75 points max, depending upon heat time.
Pilot/ Pit crew dress & equipment : 25 points max.

The 80points for the finish of the model are to be divided into 60 for the actual craftsmanship in the build and paint job including accuracy of
the build. 20 for the accessories eg prop, spinner, wheels, pilot. Additional extras such as appropriate decals SAM 35, SMAE, VTRSIG, Club
insignia, NGA etc is allowed.
The 20 points for the motor will be scored as follows:
20 points for any appropriate motor of the period; for later motors (post 1950) but of a type manufactured prior to 1957, 12 points.
Replicas of 1950 types 15 points. Others nothing.

Heat times will score on the basis of beating certain times as demonstrated in the following table :
