BOE approves
preliminary budget
at March 17 meeting
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The Moorestown Board of Education approved the preliminary
budget to be sent to the county for
approval for the 2015-2016 school
year on Tuesday, March 17. The
average Moorestown homeowner,
with a home assessed at $446,500,
would pay an additional $237.28
per year in school taxes if the
school districts preliminary
budget is passed, down from the
previous number of $244.29.
As you know, weve been talking about our 2015-2016 budget for
quite some time now. It is a work
in progress; it changes from time
to time. It is an ever-changing
process, but one thing remains
constant, and that is maintaining
and sustaining an outstanding education for our children, Superintendent Timothy Rehm said.
Changes from the budget presented on March 9 are: the budget
was reduced by $100,000 with the

MHS varsity, junior varsity debate teams crowned top teams in South Jersey
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
You wouldnt want to get into an argument with the Moorestown High School debate teams because their game is on point.
With an almost undefeated season by the
varsity team and the junior varsity team
not too far behind, there is no debating
their skills.
The members of the MHS debate teams
capped an already impressive season with
two amazing wins. Both the varsity and
junior varsity teams were crowned South
Jersey Debate League Champions on Feb.
25.
The students were thrilled to win. They
have worked hard, and our seniors have
come a long way, debate team coach
Patrick A. Mooney said.
The MHS varsity debate team finished
the regular debate season with a record of

15-1 and in first place in the varsity league.

The MHS junior varsity debate team finished its season with a record of 20-8 and in
first place in the junior varsity league. The
Moorestown teams swept both championships on the final night of competition.
These victories represent the third straight
JV championship for MHS and the first
varsity championship since 2004.
The varsity team consisted of seniors
Olivia Bewley, Ryan Graham, Brian Sever
and Rahul Wadhwa. Bewley was named
the team's Best Speaker.
Mooney has been the coach for the debate team for five years. He knew the team
had some great talents and a good amount
of experience, but didnt know that it
would do this well. However, members of
the team were more confident than he, and
the team began strong.
The teams prepared by gathering
sources and knowing their sources for the

debate topic that season. The topic this

year was The United States federal government should substantially increase its
non-military exploration and/or development in the Earths oceans. Each team
had a side either for or against the topic
and had to debate why their side was correct.
Debate is a sport of agility, your mind
needs to move fast in order to keep up with
the debate and you don't want unorganized
sources to hold you back, JV Best Speaker
sophomore Bavish Gummadi said.
Both teams continued to do well
throughout the season, ultimately making
it to the South Jersey Debate League
Championships. All members felt nervous
going into the championships, but were
also very excited. They knew the competition would be tough, but they held their

ground and ultimately both
teams won their titles.
Winning was one of the best
feelings I've ever felt. We had to go
through eight weeks of debating
just to get there and winning was
such a great feeling, Sever said.
Although the team didnt celebrate its victory right way, according to Mooney it will have a

debate dinner banquet later in

the year at which it will be recognized.
Next year the debate team is
just looking to keep up the pace. It
will be replacing the varsity team
in full, but it has a lot of talented
speakers on the rise.
The topic has already been released The United States federal
government should substantially
curtail its domestic surveillance.
Things will certainly get interesting, Mooney said.

Salaries and benefits account for roughly 80 percent of budget

SALARIES
Continued from page 1
activities fee removed; the budget
was reduced in salaries due to
two retirements for $61,000; and
the maintenance budget was reduced by $39,000.
After hearing a lot of discussion and being open to discussion
from our community, staff and
students, we felt that at this time
we would put the activity fee on
the backburner for this year, but
not to completely dismiss the concept in upcoming years as we face
very difficult times of revenue,
Rehm said.
For the March 17 presentation

of the budget, the budget was projected at $65.4 million in expenditures and $64.3 million in revenue. The board said the projected $1.1 million deficit would be
made up by using a Spending
Growth Limitations Adjustment
of $683,601 for health-care costs as
well as the use of $390,339 in
banked cap from the 2012-2013
budget.
The SGLA is a spending adjustment cap that allows the district
to go beyond the 2 percent cap
without a need for a referendum.
Moorestown didnt qualify for
this in previous years, but does
this year. The General Fund State
Aid was $3,112,139 and the Debt
Service Aid was $463,735, which is
a decrease of about $864 from last

year.
It is not a secret, our state
funding has gone down. Our demographics have changed and yet
our state funding has gone down.
What disappoints me about this
state aid is there are certain lines
that we should be receiving here
in Moorestown, for instance the
equalization aid. Within Burlington County 37 districts received
$286 million, three districts got
none; we are one of those. There
is so much that we should be getting from our wonderful state. If
you do have extra energy and
time, write to our legislators and
let them know Moorestown deserves more aid, board President
Kathy Goldenberg said.
The board said it has been in

talks with the South Jersey

Health Insurance Fund to try to
save some money. The districts
current plan with Aetna is estimated to increase by 22 percent to
27 percent. The fund has a maximum increase of 15 percent, so
switching the districts health insurance provider could help it
save $1 million, the board said.
Salaries and benefits account
for $52.5 million, or roughly 80
percent, of the total budget.
Additions to the 2015-2016
school budget include resources
to provide support for special
needs students with either one-toone or related service support; a
full-time basic skills position to
address the need for reading and
math support at the elementary

level; and resources to support

the three-year technology plan developed to create a one-to-one environment for grades seven
through nine.
Cuts include an operationalmechanic/attendance
officer,
physical education teacher at the
middle school/high school and a
world language teacher at the
middle school along with the retirements mentioned above.
The board said the districts
main goals for the 2015-2016 year
are to maintain a curriculum for
all grades that supports excellence in academic achievement,
to continue to provide technology
resources to meet how society is

By KELSEY PRUITT
Special to The Sun
It was a beautiful summer day
in July, the sun was shining (finally) and the temperature was a
perfect 80 degrees when my life
changed in an instant.
Sean and I are both from
Moorestown and attended Baker
School, WAMS and Moorestown
High School one year apart from
each other. He played sports and I
was into music theatre, so our
friend crowd never really was the
same. We reconnected a few years
after college and after talking
long distance for about a month,
we were finally both in the same
place at the same time and had
our first date on his birthday. He
was living in Colorado and I was
living in New York City, and when
Seans job moved him to San
Diego, Calif., he asked me to come
with him of course I said yes!

MARCH 2531, 2015 THE MOORESTOWN SUN 21

Wedding is set for Aug. 29

on Long Beach Island
WEDDING
Continued from page 19
We had an amazing time in San
Diego and thats where our engagement story begins.
Sean had a business trip in San
Francisco, and asked me to meet
him a few days later so we could
go explore Napa and wine country together, something I always
wanted to do. I met Sean in Napa
and we had a wine tour planned
for Saturday morning. I was so
excited! Sean looked so handsome
and got all dressed up for our
wine tour. He wanted to bring his
camera along with him to capture
the day and said he was going to
bring his backpack to hold it in. I
thought this was weird because
Sean hates carrying things, so
bringing a backpack on a long
tour was an interesting choice to
me, but I didnt mind because
then I didnt have to bring a
purse!
We picked up some lunch from
Trader Joes on the way and after
winding up a huge mountain, we
finally arrived. Sean kept commenting on how bummed he was
that it was cloudy out, but at least
it wasnt raining. We went on this
incredible one-on-one tour of the
entire winery, into the catacombs
underground and got to taste a
ton of incredible wines. The tour
ended in a giant wooden room for
us to relax in with cheese and
crackers and even more wine. We
sat down there for a while talking
with our tour guide, and just enjoying the time relaxing. After
about an hour in that room, he
suggested we walk out onto the
patio and look over the vineyard.
He opened the two giant doors
leading outside and the landscape
almost looked Technicolor. It was
brilliant hues of pink flowers and
green vines juxtaposed against

the now purely sunny blue skies

a sight Ill never forget. We
walked up to the end of the patio
and Sean pulled a card out of his
bag. This trip was supposed to be
for our one-year anniversary and
he handed me my card. I felt bad
because I had left my card in the
room he didnt tell me we were
exchanging cards here! I opened
the card and started reading it, a
beautiful card talking about how
he wanted to grow old with me.
He didnt sign the card, instead
the last sentence had an ellipse
and when I looked up, Sean was
down on one knee with this beautiful ring in his hand asking me to
marry him. Of course I said yes
and cried and hugged and kissed
him! It was the most incredible
proposal, something that I remember so vividly and will never,
ever forget. Our wedding is set for
Aug. 29 on Long Beach Island at
the Mallard Island Yacht Club.

William Allen Middle School donates $4,000 to ARVF

Students raise money during lunch periods for Voorhees-based charity raising teen cancer awareness
In only four days during the
lunch periods, William Allen Middle School of Moorestown Township Public Schools raised and donated $4,000 for the Alicia Rose
Victorious Foundation during
National Teen Cancer Awareness
Week. WAMS Student Council
chose and elected to raise awareness for the charity.
On Friday, Jan. 23 students
chose to host a WAMS Bandana
Day to show school unity and
spirit for the foundation's mission, addressing the unique needs
of hospitalized adolescents.
"Teenagers with cancer sometimes get neglected, but this week
everyone recognized them for
their courage and strength. We
learned that civic responsibility
doesn't have to wait until were
adults, they can make a change
right now," said eighth-grader
Erin Cramer on Teen Cancer
Week at WAMS.
It made me feel great to know
I was doing something that I
would appreciate if I was in their
situation as a hospitalized teen,
eighth-grader Carlie MacMillan
said.
On Feb. 17, the Moorestown
Township Public School Board of
Education honored and recognized the executive board student
council leaders for their success

Special to The Sun

Teacher Tara Warner (left), student Josh Fong, principal Matt Keith, student Ian Thomas, student Logan
Donahue, teacher Ryan Kent, student Megan Carden, student Isabel Arvelo, co-founders of ARVF Mario
and Giselle DiNatale, and teacher Katelynn Dickstein attended the Moorestown Board of Education meeting on Feb. 17 where the WMAS seventh- and eighth-grade students were honored for raising $4,000 for
hospitalized teens battling cancer. Almost the entire student body and staff of William Allen Middle
School donated money for bandanas and wore different colored bandanas on a Bandana Day to raise
awareness for the unique needs of hospitalized teens. All proceeds went to the Alicia Rose Victorious
Foundation during Teen Cancer Awareness Week.

in raising teen cancer awareness.

Being able to come to school
and be part of something bigger
was something that I enjoyed. I'm
so honored that I could be a part
of this amazing experience that
informed students and staff in
our school of people our age
going through this difficult journey," said eighth-grade student
council President Isabel Arvelo.
ARVF was inspired by Alicia
DiNatale who lost her battle to a
rare form of cancer in 2002 at the
age of 17. In her honor, the foundation raises awareness and provides teen lounges and teen kits
for care and comfort for hospitalized teens during treatment. This
is a positive and inspiring event
where students and staff demonstrated their civic responsibility
to give back to our community
during National Teen Cancer
Awareness Week.
Gisele DiNatale, founder of the
foundation, attended the school a
week prior to WAMS Bandana
Day and informed students about
the foundations mission during
an assembly for all students. DiNatales conversation with the
children about the unique needs
of hospitalized adolescents had a
profound impact on our students.

Rice usually introduces new material at each show

RICE
Continued from page 2
has been working in New York,
making comedic videos, writing
sketches, modeling and of course,
doing stand up.
It came naturally for me; I just
like to make people laugh, Rice
said.
What was a springboard to his
career as a stand up comedian
were his shows at the Ella
Lounge, where he had his first
headlining show. He had three
shows at Ella Lounge, performing

in April, June and August, that

helped him get a lot of gigs.
Through that I was able to get
other venues and shows. It was
the first place to give me a shot,
Rice said.
The Delancey and Metropolitan Room shows are Rices
biggest shows yet. Both venues
are bigger than hes ever performed his stand up at, and hes
really excited for the chance to
show people who he is and what
he is made of.
Rice would describe his sense
of humor as ironic, random,
wacky and self-deprecating. He
feels that you should be able to

laugh at yourself. He also said his

jokes are a mixture of appropriate and inappropriate.
Theyre inappropriate at
times and appropriate at times;
inappropriate until I get yelled
at, Rice said with a laugh.
Rice doesnt have a specific
routine when performing. He will
usually have new material every
show. He does bits on his family
and upbringing being the third
child,
trying
to
be
a
comedian/actor in New York and
living in New York, and topical
things that are going on in the
news.
The hardest part for him, other

than being poor, he joked, is

preparing for each show. Since he
is always writing new material,
Rice has to make sure that every
joke is memorized and down pat
before he performs.
Rice would love for everyone
who can come to go to his shows.
When people come he hopes they
get enjoyment from his performance and leave laughing.
I hope they laugh a lot and
have a good time. I hope they have
a blast and arent worried about
my emotional state, he said jokingly.
For the March 28 show at The
Delancey, 168 Delancey Street,

Lyons George and Paul Schissler

will be opening for Rice. Doors
open at 6:30 p.m. and the show
starts at 7 p.m. For more information, go to www.thedelancey.com.
Theyre two comedians I dig a
lot. It will be a good show, Rice
said.
The April 25 show at the Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd
Street, will begin at 4 p.m. with
doors opening at 3:30 p.m. For
more information, see metropolitanroom.com.

his upcoming shows, go to his
