Science Plan Eagle Mountain Middle

DRAFT (March 2015)

BIG Ideas

Grade 6/7
(2005 IRP)

Year A Topics
How water is foundational to life on
earth? Consider formations of
civilizations.
What do we need to know about
ourselves to have healthy body
systems?
What chemicals do we have in our
homes and what are their roles and
reactions?
Extreme Environments
Chemistry Matter

Year B Topics
What historical events formed the
earth over time?
How do biological ecosystems
maintain balance over short and
long-terms?
How to we sort and classify matter?

Diversity of Life
Ecology Ecosystems

Notes and Considerations:

Each year we should only plan for two major units this allows time for a third
integrated unit or a longer unit with a student designed inquiry. This also enhances
the goal of student created personalized learning
McConville, 2015

A two year cycle requires less materials and resources and allows a teacher to repeat
units every two years. It also takes into account the developmental differences
between students in 6/7 versus 7/8.
Topics from the current and proposed curriculum have been aligned to connect to the
big themes for each year
It is intended that there is a balance of the science disciplines each year (Biology,
Chemistry, Physics and Earth Sciences)
Environmental Explorers is an opportunity for students to spend and extended
amount of time in the local natural spaces doing science that is both integrated and
hands-on
