She:kon Ian (Hello in Mohawk)
I am in receipt of you e-mail. I need to cover an issue that is very important to me and I am sure it will be with you. So please read the full contents of this email. Your response to this information will determine my future support of FBC and that of my many followers in social media. I cannot support Friends of Canadian Broadcasting. By extension I cannot support Fair Vote Canada. The reason is simple. The CBC, by policy. Supports active racism and the perpetuation of racist ideology and bigotry. They also support slander and libel of public individuals and organizations. I am sure your reaction to reading this is to think Another Internet nutter. This type of response will not serve your advocacy group or the CBC. The CBC online presence includes a facility for online readership to comment on stories that CBC selectively open for comments. The moderation platform uses the Viafoura system and a contract moderation centre in Calgary. The current CBC policy allows users to disguise their identity by using pseudonyms. I have monitored the CBC Aboriginal site and Aboriginal stories across their platforms for a couple of years now. The use of pseudonyms has encouraged a hard core of white supremacists, denialists, and anti-Indigenous hate mongers to become established on the CBC sites. It is important to examine the distinction between free speech and Page 1 of 10
opinions expressed through a pseudonym account. Free speech carries
the responsibility of being factual and and considered in the ideas expressed. This prudence is enforced by the knowledge that there are consequences of crossing certain lines. Accountability in this form is a mandatory component of free speech. Comments made through use of a pseudonym are not subject to the laws or rules implicit in accountability. The sample I provide herein will demonstrate the lack of accountability. I have contacted the CBC Ombudsman. They have declared the propagation of racist ideology on CBCs online presence is not in their mandate. They directed me to Jennifer McGuire, Director of News. I have written formally to her twice now and informally several times. She has yet to respond. I can only conclude that she is okay with providing a platform that supports racist comment and even the genocide of First Nations people. As a First Nations person, I take her position very seriously. It makes her and the CBC, part of the systemic racism that is institutionalized in Canadas governments and policies as noted by James Anaya, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Next week I will be initiating a social media campaign to call attention to the relationship between Friends of Canadian Broadcasting, the CBC, Canadian taxpayers and the policies of the CBC that continue to support racism and bigotry with public funds. I am providing links to my correspondence with the CBC on this matter. I have also included screen shots of a selection of comments that demonstrate my point. I have hundreds of screen shots capturing a wide range of racist ideology from various CBC sites. The possible actions that you as an interested party, might suggest to the CBC are: 1. Stop allowing comments on online stories. 2. Allow comments and establish a mechanism requiring real names in the way the Huffington Post runs their comment boards Page 2 of 10
Thank you for your attention to the issues I have raised.
