Project Graduation

Mad Hatter Tea Party

Annual Moorestown High

School celebration for seniors
in need of community support
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Moorestowns Project Graduation has been a huge event for
Moorestown High School graduates for about 27 years. What used
to be a fun, alcohol-free celebration for seniors has recently become more than just a one-day
event and has extended throughout the week, including social
media incorporation. However,
Project Graduation cant be done
without the help of the community.
Members of the Moorestown
Education/Project Graduation
are asking for businesses and residents of the community to make
a donation to help graduates have
a fun, safe, alcohol-free night after
graduation.
Project Graduation has been a
big part of our community. It is
such a great memory, and continues to be for me. Were asking
members of the community to
step in and make sure we continue to provide that same magical
experience each year ahead, said
Trevor Durham, a MHS alumnus
and a member of the Project
Graduation Committee.

Project Graduation is a nationwide initiative that began 36

years ago in Oxford Hills, Maine,
in response to seven alcohol- and
drug-related teen deaths that occurred during graduation celebration. Moorestown adopted
Project Graduation 27 years ago
as an annual community-sponsored event for MHS graduates.
The event shows teenage parties with alcohol-free and drugfree alternatives can still be a lot
of fun. Project Graduation not
only protects MHS graduates during this particular event, but also
serves as an example to the
towns children that celebrations
do not need to include drugs or alcohol to be fun.
"I would want them to realize
that they can celebrate an event
and have an amazing and spectacular time without a drop of alcohol or drugs," Robin Pendino, another Project Graduation committee member, said.
The desire is to have each one
of our graduates that we can provide for them a safe and fun-filled
week-long event that culminates
to an all-night long celebration,

Want to retire in New Jersey?

You must be out of your mind, survey says
k, so the survey in question
the Best and Worst States to
Retire, compiled by
Bankrate.com didnt exactly find
that youd be out of your mind to retire in New Jersey, but it did rank the
Garden State near the bottom of the
list of desirable places to spend the latter portion of your life.
This should not be a shock.
The survey ranks New Jersey 45th
on the list of best places to retire,
based on the fact that the cost of living
is high (45th), the community well
being is low (43rd) and the tax rate is
very high (49th). These factors out-

weight the low crime rate (eighth) and

the above-average weather and healthcare quality.
Theres a reason why so many New
Jerseyans retire elsewhere its
cheaper. And cheaper is better, because most people would rather see
their hard-earned money go toward
vacations than taxes, for example.

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

Many retirees go to Florida not just for

the weather but for the absence of a
state income tax.
Maybe if New Jersey was more affordable, more elderly residents would
stay at home, near their friends and
family. But since its not, many dont.
We are probably not the only ones
who laughed when we pondered where
in New Jersey other than, say, a
beach town such as Ocean City
would be a good place to retire. And
thats a shame, and a problem all at the
same time.
Our residents shouldnt have to prepare to leave when they retire.

Moorestown Council addresses water well concerns

Township manager says wells will remain closed until a treatment plan is in place
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
At last weeks Moorestown Council
meeting, an ordinance introduction on
abandoned properties and open space encroachment was tabled for the next meeting. Instead, a hot topic of the meeting was
once again the condition of the water wells
that were closed last year.
As of now, wells seven and nine are remaining closed until a treatment is identified. Also, the township has hired a new engineer and is thinking about hiring a scientist to evaluate the condition of all the
towns drinking water, according to township manager Scott Carew.
We will open the wells when we have a
treatment plan in place. We are working
closely with the DEP. I assure you we are
taking every precaution that is not only
legally, but responsibly required of us,
Mayor Victoria Napolitano said.
Adam Procopio, a scientist and
Moorestown resident, came before council
to express his concerns with the two wells

closed because of Trichloropropane (TCP

1,2,3) was found in the drinking water last
October. He wanted to know if the wells
would be turned on anytime soon and
questioned some of the other levels found
in the water that were publicly available on
the Department of Environmental Protections website. He asked that the wells remain inactive until a treatment is found.
Members of council assured him the
wells are remaining closed as they decide
what the appropriate treatment would be.
Township Attorney Anthony Drollas made
a point to mention that theyve been working on the wells and they closed them not
because they were told to, but as a precaution.
Weve been working on this issue since
last October. We are addressing any remediation issues associated with wells seven
and nine. Weve went over and above with
an abundance of caution to shut down the
wells, not because we were ordered to do
so, but because DEP suggested it. We
felt it was the right thing to do, Drollas
said.

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Carew then spoke about the maximum

contaminate level of the wells. He said the
DEP told him that nothing in those wells
exceeds the MCL and that there would
technically be nothing legally wrong with
turning the wells back on.
Ive been told by the DEP, and perhaps
they are wrong, that there is not a single
MCL that we exceed right now and that
there is no legal impenitent from turning
those wells back on, Carew said.
Carew also said a new engineer is working on the wells right now along with the
DEP to get the best recommendation on
how the wells would be treated. He mentioned that the township is looking into
hiring a scientist as well to review data
from the wells and tell the township what
he or she feels is best, based on his or her
expert opinion.
Napolitano assured those present at the
meeting that any new information on the
wells would be told to the public as it came.
As more details are available, they will
be delivered to the public, Napolitano
said.

cause of their outstanding

records of community service
and volunteerism.
Volunteer Center President
Kimberly Mattson said this is the
first time that the public has been
actively asked to participate in
the nomination process. But
thats not all unlike past years,
the Volunteer Center also is looking to honor as many as three
Burlington County residents at
its annual awards dinner in the
fall.
We are extremely proud of
our 16 past recipients, each of
whom was honored at our annual
awards dinner, Mattson said.
However, we also realize there
are many unsung, low-profile
community activists who need to
be publicly recognized, applauded, and formally thanked, for
their distinguished volunteer
service.
That said, we are asking county residents to bring to our attention their neighbors, coworkers
and acquaintances they deem
worthy of the Community Serv-

provide us with some background information, Mattson
said.
The nomination form can be
easily accessed at the Volunteer
Centers website at www.volunteercenterburlingtoncounty.org.
The form can be filled out and
submitted electronically, or printed and mailed to the Volunteer
Center at Burlington County College, Parker Center 122, County
Route 530, Pemberton, NJ.
Those seeking additional information can call (856) 894-9311, Ext.

The deadline for nominations
is April 14.
The Volunteer Center most recently honored Robert and Ellen
Healey of Lumberton, whose
unique equine program provides
education and guidance to children in need or facing personal
challenges. The Healeys also support charitable activities in other
countries, including the Ebolastricken Sierra Leone.

Band founded in 2012

Souls and other similar acts. Ransom Price plays punk rock that is
simple, without pretense and effective, he said.
Ransom played in bands for
about 15 years and has run Unable Records for eight years; he
felt it was about time he started
getting out his own music.
I wasnt making my own
music, and I wanted to change
that. So I formed Ransom Price. It
was just an outlet for me to get
back into making my own music.
I had a lot of pent-up energy that I
needed to get out, Ransom said.
The name My Kidnap Money
came about for a number of different reasons. First, he wanted
the album title to go with the
bands name, named fittingly for
Ransoms last name and his
wifes maiden name, Price. Also,
when he was younger, people
would always spell his last name
wrong. His father would tell peo-

lyrics. It was cathartic to me, sort
of a self therapy. Putting my feelings down on paper and being
able to get some perspective by
writing the album helped me to
move on, Ransom said.
Pre-sales of the CD have already begun through Unable
Records, and a deluxe version of
the album, complete with an
eight-page iTunes booklet and
instant gratification track, are
available for pre-order on iTunes
now.
Ransom Price was founded in
December 2012 by Ransom, formerly a member of the 90s punk
band Point Blank, and by former
Endless Sacrifice drummer Chris
Mazure. Ransoms songwriting
draws heavy stylistic influence
from bands such as Green Day,

Ransom hopes listeners create

own song meanings
RANSOM
Continued from page 20
ple on the phone, Ransom, you
know, like the kidnap money? So
he drew inspiration from that.
Other than choosing the name
just to stick with the theme, Ransom felt like a hostage to himself
at the time he wrote these songs.
A few years ago, Ransom went
through a two-year period where
he was struggling with depression, work and family issues, and
the loss of some friends. He decided to write down his feelings to
help himself through the struggle.
To be honest, it was a difficult
album to write because of the
subject matter, being so personal.
It was two years of really struggling and realizing my life has
changed. At the time, it was very
hard for me; that is why the
album is very, very good. The best
I have ever written, and I think it
is the fact that it is very personal
and means so much to me, Ransom said.
It took a few years after that
struggle for Ransom to take his
writing and turn it into an album,
but when he did, he was able to do
it within two years and felt like a
weight lifted off his shoulders.
It was a relief when it was all
done. I can move on and appreciate it for the music and song itself
rather than what I went
through, Ransom said.
Although the My Kidnap
Money album confronts some
significant topics such as depres-

sion, stress, marriage and the

passing of friends, Ransom hopes
listeners create their own meanings out of the songs. He honestly
wants people to relate to the
music in their own way and take
their own perspective. However,
he also would love for people to
just listen to the music and like it
just for the fun.
If you want to just bob your
head to the music or gain some
sort of perspective, Ill be fine
with it either way, Ransom said.
Ransom Price is a studio project for now. However, in addition
to preparing for the release of
My Kidnap Money, Ransom
Price is also in pre-production on
two separate music videos, both
scheduled to be released later this
spring. According to Ransom, it
could turn into more.

Well see what happens, Ransom said.

Prior to My Kidnap Money,
Ransom Price released two successful singles one in January
2013 (West from El Paso) and
one in July 2014 (Drink). The
former was the cornerstone of a
benefit project that raised more
than $1,000 for the Lung Cancer
Foundation of America. Both
singles, as well as the new album,
were recorded at 0x1 Sound Studio in Cherry Hill, by award-winning engineer/producer Jason
Ruch.
My Kidnap Money will be
available through all major online retailers Tuesday, April 7.

Project Graduation a week of activities

PROJECT
Continued from page 1
Durham said.
The week begins on Monday
with a senior picnic; and then,
throughout the week, seniors will
check Twitter where Durham
will tweet last-minute secret locations and activities that students
can go to or win prizes by going to
the secret location mentioned.
It is something we didnt have
going on, but we obviously had
such a strong Twitter presence, we
had to do it. We do spur-of-the-moment events. It allows for constant
contact and spur-of-the-moment
activities that really build up excitement for the week leading up
to graduation, Durham said.
On the day of their graduation,
MHS graduates will leave directly
from the high school, immediately following their graduation ceremony, and board buses headed to
secret locations where they are
entertained with games, food and

ALL NATURAL LOTIONS AND SCRUBS

prizes while keeping the celebration going all night long. The students, along with community and
school staff volunteers, return to
MHS at 5 a.m. the following morning tired, but safe.
Durham and Pendino said
their favorite part of the event is
seeing all the seniors come together. It doesnt matter their
background or what they were involved in, the students really
come together as a group to
achieve goals to win prizes and
have fun while doing so.
It is so heartwarming to see
these kids get along and have a
fun time. It doesnt matter their
background or their GPA, they all
get along so great and it is just
wonderful, Pendino said.
The cost of this event is more
than $150 per student, which is
funded through the generosity of
students families, local businesses and the community. To support
Project Graduation, you can
make a tax-deductible contribution at www.moorestowneducationfoundation.org or make a
check payable to MEF/Project
Graduation and mail it to
Moorestown Project Graduation
2015, c/o Moorestown High
School, 350 Bridgeboro Road,
Moorestown, N.J. 08057.
It really is a daunting task to

put on Project Graduation; any

amount is appreciated, Pendino
said.
Year after year, we put this
event on and celebrate our graduates each year. The donation portion is so important, from the
town and even from around the
country, to celebrate our children
and provide them a safe and fun
environment on their graduation
night. We are thankful for any involvement anyone desires to have
in the night, Durham said.
Also this year, Project Graduation is selling new lawn-signs in
support of the graduating class.
The sign says, Congratulations!
Moorestown High School Class of
2015. Graduates and parents of
graduates arent the only ones
asked to purchase a lawn sign,
but everyone is asked to buy one
to show their support of high
school students graduating and
the class of 2015. Lawn signs are
$25 each, and forms can be found
online.
As a community, it is a nice
way to honor our senior class.
Wed like it to become a tradition.
Even if youve already graduated...just do it to honor the senior
class, Pendino said.
If interested in volunteering,
contact Maria Giarratano at
maria.g@foxroach.com.
