Notes on Wine Tasting

Its a good idea to plan to visit several wineries as every
wine-tasting experience offered is different. With so many
distinctive viticultural areas, one can easily taste many
of the worlds best varietials and winemaking styles
without learning the region. Listed below are five basic
types of tasting experiences. The experience will vary in
style from winery to winery.

Wine bar Tasting

The most common tasting experience is a Wine Bar
Tasting. You step up to the bar where typically a list of
wines being poured is displayed. Expect to pay a tasting
fee between $10-$40. Some tasting bars will offer you the
option to taste a library or reserve wine. Exercising this
option increases the fee, but will allow you to taste very
unique, old or rare wines.

Sit Down Tasting

A Sit Down Tasting usually requires an appointment
and there may be a slightly higher fee than a wine bar fee.
Seated in an elegant room, you are poured several wines
by your winery host. Expect your host to describe the
unique characteristics of each wine and how it was made.

Table Service Tasting

A Table Service Tasting, popular at sparkling wine
facilities, is a tasting experience where you are seated at a
table and the tastings are brought to you.

Walk Around Tasting

A Walk Around Tasting is a combination of a tour and
a tasting. Your host brings along several bottles of wine
on your tour, and may take you to a garden area of the

winery to pour the first round. Then you move to another

place within the winery to sample the next wine. This
experience continues until all the wines are tasted.

barrel Tasting
Another popular tasting experience that can be part
of a tour or a Walk Around is a Barrel Tasting. Your guide
takes a wine thief, a special siphon placed into a hole in
the top of a barrel to extract tasting samples of a maturing
wine. The sample allows you to taste what the wine is like
in the middle of developing its full potential.

Why make an appointment?

Some wineries are so small that they need to know
when you are coming so someone will be there to greet
you. Other wineries have permit restrictions that limit the
number of guests that can visit each day. Others have sitdown tastings that start and end at specific times. Its
always a good idea to schedule your appointments well
in advance of your visit because some of the more popular
wineries fill up their appointments weeks in advance.

Do the Math
One of the questions most asked when it comes to wine is how much of this does it take to make that, and so on. We wont
pretend that its simple, but here are some industry statistics that will give a pretty good answer to that query. As with
anything agricultural, of course, they are all based on countless variables when it comes to acre yields, but this is a good
starting point. The rest of the information varies little if at all.

A case of wine includes:

A single bottle contains:

a dozen 750 ml bottles

(or 24 half bottles)
or 307.2 ounces total,
which comes from
30 pounds of grapes.

750 ml of wine which is 25.6 ounces made

from about 2.4 pounds of grapes (39 oz.) and is
enough for four or maybe five glasses.

An acre of vineyard land can give the grower:

five tons of grapes (though it is also less,
depending on a variety of farming and winemaking
practices, and on the varietal and the vineyard
One standard oak barrel of wine holds:
location) which will give you 797 gallons of juice
295 bottles of wine (or 59 gallons) made from 740 pounds of grapes (or thirteen-and-a-half barrels) which is pretty close
which works out to almost but not precisely 24 cases of wine.
to four thousand bottles of wine.

What does all that information on a wine label mean?

XYZ Winery

The U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms regulates wine

labels and requires that information be given in a straightforward
way. Basically, you will want to look for the types of grapes grown,
where the grapes are grown and when the grapes were picked.

WINEOLOGY Intelligence for The Wine Consumer

BY LEN NAPOLITANO

What is Terroir?
The French term, terroir (pronounced
tear-wah), is the term for the conditions that
make a specific grape-growing site, and its
wine, distinctive. It comes from a
philosophy, originated in Europe, that a
multitude of influences in nature
surrounding a vineyard, or wine region,
create a wines character. These natural
factors include soil composition, day and
nighttime temperatures, the amount of
rainfall, the direction of the sun, just to
name a few.
Terroir explains why some of the best
California Pinot Noir, for example, originate
in the regions of Carneros and Russian
River. They may be separated by about 30
miles but they share similar soils and
experience the same cooling effects from
bodies of water nearby either the ocean, in
the case of the Russian River area, or San
Pablo Bay for the Carneros region. Both
regions produce rich and complex wines
made from Pinot Noir grapes that reflect
their similar terroir.
Over centuries of winemaking around the
world, it has been learned that the
uniqueness of a specific location is what
creates the personality of a wine. Although
the French word terrior has no English
translation, it has become a term used
everywhere to describe this interaction of
the many factors that influence a grapegrowing site.

The Soil Wall is part of The Terroir Tasting at MacPhail Family Wines
located at The Barlow in Sebastopol. See page 44 for details.

So, the next time you taste a great wine,

whether Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet
Sauvignon or Zinfandel, take notice of
where the grapes were grown. If a distinct
site is listed on the label as the origin of the
grapes, such as the name of a specific
vineyard or an official wine geographic
region (also known as an appellation) know
that you are tasting more than just the
grapes that made the wine. You are
experiencing terrior everything in nature
that makes that site or region, unique.

Heading to the Tasting Room

Do not be intimidated for
any reason. That is rule number
one (and there are very few real
rules after that). For the most
part, going wine tasting is about
the easiest thing in the world, especially here in Northern California where wineries and
tasting rooms abound. You can
find wineries specializing in red
wines of all types, those that are Twomey Cellars
famous for their white wines and
others who pour sparkling wine. It is a matter of doing a
little research and planning your day.
Most tasting rooms open around 10 a.m. and close between 4:30 and 6 p.m. As a rule sparkling wine houses are
opened the latest. Before you start off pack a few essentials: Water (plenty of water) and something to snack on
crackers or a baguette. Many wineries have picnic areas
and there are plenty of delis and bakeries that can make
up a lunch for you, or make your own. Which brings us
to eating and drinking, the kind that doesnt directly involve wine.
Be sure to nibble during the day and make sure you
make time for lunch. Two tips: drink at least twice as much
water as you do wine, and remember that you dont have
to drink everything poured into your glass. There is a reason tasting bars have dump buckets and a pitcher of water
to wash out your glass.
That said, here are some tips that have proven to be
helpful and are designed to help make the sensory adventure of wine tasting all the more enjoyable.
Dont be afraid to ask questions. Time and time again
I have heard knowledgeable winery workers say that there
is no such thing as a stupid question, and they mean that.
You can drink what you want, in the order you want.
If you only like reds, say so; if you dont like sweet wines,
speak up. But the idea of starting with whites, then going
on to reds and then sweet wines is a good guide.
Zinfandel is red. I am sure you know that but it never
hurts to remind everyone.
If there is a particular wine you want to try and it is
not on the list, ask. There might be a bottle around that
was opened for a trade tasting or by the winemaker. Most
tasting rooms are happy to pour a little if you show enthusiasm.
If you plan to take wine home with you, either in the

16

car or on a plane, buy a cardboard box with Styrofoam wine

inserts. Fill it during the day and
this keeps wine from rolling
around in the trunk.
Check out the smaller
wineries. It is a revelation.
Take notes on the wines you
most enjoyed.
Take advantage of tours
when the winery offers them, but
keep in mind that they take anywhere from 20 minutes to well over an hour, so one a day
is plenty.
Buy wines that you can only find at the winery. These
often include smaller (375 ml) bottles of limited production Ports or dessert wines. Dont buy a wine you can get
at a supermarket back home. Youll pay more, and besides,
whats the point?
Look for tasting rooms in towns. Many of these are cooperative tasting rooms, where in one place you might find
wines from a dozen or more small-to-medium premium
producers. They are scattered throughout the area and
more are opening all the time.
Dont give too much thought to ratings and vintages.
Its like art: if you like it, its a good wine. It is as simple as
that.
Remember that you dont have to do the driving. It
takes no more than a phone call to rent anything from a
Town Car or restored Packard convertible to stretch limos
and a 20-passenger bus. All have drivers that will stow
your wine for you and the local companies know the area.
As to taking that wine home, ten people sharing one of
those impossibly long limousines is fine and fun, but if
you all plan to buy a couple of cases the trunk which is
no bigger than a normal luxury cars is going to fill up
fast and youre going to find yourself filling the interior
floor with boxes and using cases of Cabernet as footrest.
Tell the transportation company what you have in
mind and listen to their advice. They know the territory
and the people and personalities.
Know your limits. If you get close to it let others taste
and you can listen. It beats ending the day in a blur, and if
need be calling a taxi is cheaper than the alternative.
And if at a seated tasting, dont be afraid to leave a gratuity. Its more than worth the five or ten dollars to get wisdom and wine and a great time.

Dry Creek Valley : : 19

Set in the heart of Dry Creek Valley is a special estate called

Truett Hurst. As you drive in, the sheep and goat pasture is the
first indication that this is not in any way your average winery.
Vineyards are flanked by habitat islands for birds and beneficial
insects, and there are bluebird and owl boxes. Maintaining
biodiversity and habitat are part of the farming philosophy here.
Our commitment to responsible stewardship of this property is
matched by the passion with which we handcraft awardwinning Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay,
Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel Ros.
The wines are made by fermenting grapes in small, open-top
stain fermenters. The grapes are punched down during
fermentation, rather than pumped over, allowing for gentle
extraction of color and flavor components, while avoiding bitter
tannins. Then wines are barrel aged in approximately 30% new
French oak, until the flavors and structure of the wine perfectly
balance. The result: big, bold, textured wines with lots of spice
and jammy fruit.
You can savor these wines in one of the most comfortable
and relaxing wineries in the valley. You have a choice of
Adirondack chairs down by the creek where you may see
Steelhead or Coho salmon. Or hang out on the patio and listen
to music while enjoying the sublime scenery of Dry Creek, or
enjoy a picnic or a slow lunch in the olive grove. If this is not

make you feel right at home in this inviting tasting room.

Dry Creek Valley : : 21

Enjoy a Vineyard and Olive Mill Tour with Wine & Olive Oil Pairing
Even as a young boy, Tim Bucher, owner of Trattore Estate Wines
and the Dry Creek Olive Company, was awed by the beauty of the Dry
Creek Valley. Bucher, who was born and raised on his familys dairy
farm in the neighboring Russian River Valley, would accompany his
father to help manage the cattle they grazed in Dry Creek and tell his
father that one day, he would live in Dry Creek Valley.
At the same time, young Bucher was discovering his fascination for
tractors and all things mechanical. From the time he was eight years
old, he would repair the tractors on the family dairy farm. His
entrepreneurial spirit was born early, too Bucher bought his first two
acres of land in Dry Creek Valley when he was just 16 years old, and
began making wine when he was 17.
Buchers mechanical aptitude and entrepreneurial spirit led him first
to a graduate degree from Stanford University, then to a successful
career in the Silicon Valley. But Dry Creek Valley was always calling to
him.
The Bucher family eventually returned to Dry Creek Valley and in
2006 started the Dry Creek Olive Company, which quickly became a
hit with locals and foodies for its estate, blended and flavored olive oils.
In 2011, they launched Trattore Estate Wines, featuring wines
produced from the familys 40-acre Dry Creek Valley estate just up the

ORGANic AND biODYNAMic WiNEMAKiNG AT iTS bEST

Quivira doesnt just make wine, it grows wine. Here, at the
estate located a few miles west of downtown Healdsburg in Dry
Creek Valley, each bottle of wine signifies the winerys mission to
elevate winemaking to a way of life that is truly sustainable and
respectful of the land through biodynamic farming.
Quivira owners Pete and Terri Kight bought the estate in 2006,
aiming to create a place that took care of its land and educated the
public on the power of biodynamic farming, which utilizes the
highest of sustainable farming methods by nurturing the soil and
tapping into natures power.
Touring the estate, visitors will encounter chickens, organic
vegetable and herb gardens, cows and beehives. All are participants
in the biodynamic method to fertilize the soil that grows the wine
grapes. Everything that comes from the vineyard goes back into the
vineyard. The result is a self-sustaining farm that is at once rustic
and ahead of its time.
The winery is a wonderful place for a picnic after enjoying a
tasting or tour of the grounds. Relax at one of the picnic tables with
your favorite bottle of wine and take in the tranquil surroundings.
Stroll among the vegetable gardens and dont miss the intriguing
stalk of tree kale. Wander over to the chicken coop, where several
breeds of chickens will be foraging.
A visit to Quivira will not only give you access to great wine,
but it will give you an intimate and unforgettable experience in this

If it werent for the sandwich board sign along West Dry

Creek Road, it would be easy to miss the turnoff for Martorana
Family Winery. But a wonderful wine country experience
awaits as you pull off the paved road and travel down the
gravel path that winds around organic estate vineyards to the
winery, which is built into the hillside.
Youll likely be greeted by Sauvignon Blanc, the winery
dog, and perhaps notice winemaker and owner Gio Martorana
fiddling around among the wine barrels. Wander into the
tasting room to find the welcoming face of Wendy Cox, who
will guide you through a tasting and offer a tour of the estate.
Though the winery has only been open to the public for
three years, the Martorana family has been growing grapes in
Dry Creek Valley for more than 30 years. Today, half the
grapes they grow are sold, and the other half are made into
Martorana wine.
Gio also makes olive oil from the more than 200 olive trees
growing on the estate. There is a limited production of the oil,
but it sells out every year.
Many come to Martorana for the small winery experience,
and it is a wonderful place to have a picnic. Wendy puts
together picnic basket lunches for visitors, who can sit at a
picnic table and take in the serene surroundings or pick up a
game of bocce ball.
Reservations are required for special savory tastings, in
which wines are paired with savory herbed cookies. Wendy
also recommends calling 24 hours ahead for a picnic lunch

The view from Armida Winery overlooking the Russian River and
Dry Creek valleys is expansive, impressive and inspirational enough to
prompt many wedding engagements. Yet its the playful and friendly
culture that really keeps people coming back to this special place.
Armida has been around for more than 20 years, launched by
brothers Steve and Bruce Cousins, who still run the winery today.
Bruce is the maitred of sorts, a jack-of-all-trades, who will be spotted
hand-sorting grapes during harvest as well as chatting up visitors in
the tasting room, located in one of several geodesic domes on the
property.
Armida may best be known for its playful, unconventional labels,
poizin, The Wine to Die For, and its ANTIDOTE, a Pinot Gris with
alluring aromas of cantaloupe and meyer lemon.
While they like to have fun, all of the Armida employees also take
their business very seriously, producing fabulous wines from some of
Sonomas best vineyards. Many of the wines come from a single
vineyard such as the Maple Vineyards Zinfandel, a famous old-vine
vineyard on the east side of Dry Creek Valley. Armida is also proud of
its 2012 Il Campo Estate Field Red, sourced from its estate ranch at
the winery in the western hills of Healdsburg.
Most of Armidas wines are only available at the winery, so dont
hesitate to take a picnic up to the winery, where you can enjoy the
view on the oak-shaded deck and indulge in a great bottle of wine,
making new friends on the bocce court. If youre lucky youll get to

De La Montanya Estate Vineyards was established in 1995

with the planting of the Home Ranch in the heart of the
Russian River Valley. Eight years later, in the summer of 2003,
owners Tina and Dennis De La Montanya opened the winery
and tasting room just five minutes from downtown Healdsburg.
At present, De La Montanya has a total of 270 acres of
vineyards planted throughout Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake
counties. The appellations include Sonoma Coast, Russian
River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, Redwood
Valley and Kelseyville Bench, and from these vineyards De La
Montanya has been known to make up to 18 different wines,
ranging in size from one barrel (24 cases) to 25 barrels (400
cases), truly specializing in small-lot winemaking.
The charming tasting room and winery at De La Montanya
Vineyards is known affectionately as The Barn, which is
located among the Felta Creek vineyard and apple orchard. The
Barn is where guests experience wine the way it was intended
to be, with good friends and family in a welcoming, fun and
beautiful environment. Just outside the tasting room is an
outdoor kitchen complete with a pizza oven, a gorgeous garden
picnic area and even a bocce court.
De La Montanya Estate wines are only available to wine
club members and through the tasting room. While the wine
business can be very serious, we strive to make it a fun
experience for our guests and wine club members, says Dennis
De La Montanya. We like to have a connection between all of
us at the winery and our guests, which is what keeps them
coming back each year.

MOONDANCE

Russian River : : 33

Located in the verdant, rolling hills of rural Sebastopol, Moondance

Cellars is an experience not to be missed. The wines are excellent and fairly
priced, the people, dog and horses are friendly and welcoming and theres
not an ounce of pretension to be found anywhere on the property. You will
come a visitor and leave as a friend. I certainly did.
The whole atmosphere at Moondance Cellars is one of warm,
unpretentious fun. Owners, David and Priscilla Cohen invite visitors to
share in our love of life, and when you visit, you certainly will. Maury,
Australian Shepherd and Greeter Extraordinaire will politely ask you for a
treat, as will the horses (two Quarter Horses and an adorable, talkative
mini-horse).
The tasting room is the most unpretentious, friendly and rustic tasting
room Ive ever stepped foot in and Ive stepped foot in more than a few in
my long, wine-drenched career. There are cases of wine stacked along the
walls, the bar is two wine barrels, topped with a thick plank of wood and
the whole room has a crazy tilt to it. I loved it. I loved the wines, too.
Moondance Cellars has a sister brand called Orchard Station (mostly
white wines) and the wines are equally stylish and tasty. Both brands are
available for tasting and purchase in the tasting room and on the website.
Every wine I tasted was excellent, but I only have room to write about a
couple, so Ill write about my favorites:
2013 Sauvignon Blanc, Russian River Valley ($24): This tasty, super
aromatic wine is almost too easy to drink! Aromas and flavors of
grapefruit, freshly cut grass and savory green herbs abound, all wrapped
up in a zippy, fresh mouthfeel. Long, juicy finish.
2013 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley $46: Mouthwatering aromas of
cherry, vanilla, rose petals and spice lead into a silky, sexy mouthful of
consistent flavors, which linger through the long, delicious finish.
Mmmm.

Balletto Vineyards & Winery is conveniently located on the outskirts of

Santa Rosa and the perfect stop as you wend your way through the Russian
River Valley. Why? The staff is friendly, engaging and knowledgeable, the
Balletto family are great people, the surroundings are beautiful and the
wines are wonderful and reasonably priced.
The tasting room and winery are housed in a large warehouse-like
building, but once you are inside the tasting room, it feels like you are
inside a Tuscan villa. The walls are painted warm mustard gold and a long
concrete bar spans one side of the room. A tasteful selection of wine-related
gifts is displayed around the room.
In 2002, the Balletto family worked with Sonoma Countys Agriculture
Preservation & Open Space District and generously donated a portion of
their estate (the winerys western boundary) to the Laguna de Santa Rosa.
This vast wetland habitat and major tributary of the Russian River is home
to numerous species of birds and animals. It is a local treasure it is open
to the public and offers miles of beautiful hiking and biking trails.
Along with preserving natural habitats, the Balletto familys altruistic
tendencies also include their staff they may be the only winery with a
regulation-sized baseball diamond on the property, built because the
vineyard crew asked John Balletto to sponsor their baseball league. John
not only sponsored the league, he custom built a field of dreams for
them. Games are on Sundays during spring and summer.
Balletto Vineyards & Winerys first commercial vintage was in 2001.
Now, over a decade later, the wines of Balletto are still going strong
consistently garnering good press and winning multiple medals.
As proud as the Balletto family is about their agricultural heritage
and environmental practices, their true passion is in sharing their wines
(and I can personally vouch that the wines are amazing!).

The apple doesnt fall far from the tree, er, grapevine at Graton Ridge
Cellars. This charming, family-owned winery has roots that go three
generations deep in the charming apple-and-grape-infused city of
Sebastopol.
Graton Ridge Cellars is owned and operated by the Paul family. They
have been inviting visitors to the location that now houses the winery
since 1945. Back then, the family sold apples and juice made from locally
famous Gravestein apples. Graton Ridge Cellars still produces a bit of
apple juice, but it is either made into their amazing A-Plus Apple Port or
shared with their visitors. The main focus is on wine now, and the wines
are really good!
Wander in to the tasting room, taste a few wines and share some stories
with the friendly, knowledgeable staff. Chances are good that a family
member will be on hand to pour wine and visit with you. At harvest time,
the friendly folks at Graton Ridge welcome visitors to get their hands dirty
with winemaking. If youve never punched down fermenting grapes
before, or even if you have, its an experience not to be missed. Tours and
barrel tasting are available by request any time of the year.
This small, estate winery (four and a half acres) is friendly in every
sense of the word, from the redwood shaded picnic area and bocce court
to the big friendly smiles and delicious wines in the rustic tasting room
and art gallery. Bring your dog (friendly dogs on a leash are OK). Bella, a
gorgeous four-year-old Border Collie, will greet you and your guests.
Greeting visitors is her favorite job, after chasing tennis balls, of course.

Located in the heart of the Russian River Valley, Olivet

Road has been home to the De Loach family for 35 years.
Cecil De Loach was a firefighter in San Francisco for 16
years and in 1970, he and his wife Christine bought their
first 24-acre vineyard in Sonoma County and started second
careers as winegrowers. Five years later they made their first
wine and they went on to build one of the countrys most
successful, popular and iconic wine brands.
In 2003, with the De Loach Vineyards brand one of the
biggest in the country, the De Loach family decided to start
over. They sold their eponymous winery and concentrated
on Hook & Ladder, which theyd started 20 years earlier
with a Port. In 2004, they opened Hook & Ladder on Olivet
Road on the first property the family purchased, next to the
historic Barbieri Ranch.
Cecil retired from firefighting in 1982, but there are lots
of firefighter themes at Hook & Ladder, including fire
department patches and t-shirts from visiting firefighters
decorating the tasting room. Now, three generations of the
De Loach family keep Hook & Ladder to just 35,000-case
annually.
As part of their philosophy of keeping it simple to help
keep prices down, the informal and friendly tasting room
occupies a part of the winery itself. As to the wine? Medals,
loyal followers and enthusiastic newcomers to the wines are
further proof that the De Loaches are still making great wine
after all these years.

Martin Ray Winery is an ambitious amalgam of labels and

wines, all housed in one of Sonoma Countys most historic
wineries. Founder/Proprietor Courtney Benham is a thirdgeneration San Joaquin Valley winemaker who knew he wanted to
some day own a winery himself. In 1990, he discovered a treasure
trove of old library wines with the label of Martin Ray, a Santa Cruz
Mountains winemaker. Courtney bought the rights to the Martin
Ray name and in 2003 purchased the historic Martini-Prati Winery
in western Sonoma County; now home to the Martin Ray line of
wines.
One common thread between Courtney and Martin Ray is the
firm belief that vineyard location is crucial to character and quality
of the wine. There is a special emphasis on mountain-grown wines,
a conviction that mountain-side elevation provides cooler nights
during the growing season which result in superb fruit ripeness.
Diamond Mountain in Napa Valley, Sonoma Mountain in Sonoma
County and the Santa Cruz Mountains to the south are three of the
most prestigious vineyard locations for Martin Ray grapes.
Wines available include fruit-forward, picnic-friendly Angeline
wines, Martin Ray wines that have elegant structure and vineyard
character, the vineyard designated reserve wines and Courtney
Benham wines that are limited-production offerings from some of
Californias most interesting wine regions.
At the winery, picnic tables and chairs outside the tasting room
overlook verdant hills and vineyards. Lush, colorful landscape and
flowers surround the tasting room. The friendly and
knowledgeable tasting room staff can suggest interesting wines to
taste side-by-side, so visitors can compare a Cabernet Sauvignon
from Sonoma Mountain with one from Alexander Valley. Its not

Taft Street Winery

2030 Barlow Lane, Sebastopol, (707) 823-2049
Open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekends until 4:30 p.m.
The term Garagistes originated in Bordeaux, France in the 1980s and
referred to a group of innovative winemakers who produced exceptional
wines in their garages rather than a grand chateaux. Like the renegade
French Garagistes, Taft Street began in a garage in 1979, stressing quality
without pretense. The winery continues in the Garagistes tradition to this
day, producing limited production, handcrafted wines from select Sonoma
County vineyards. Taft Street makes great wine, available at a fair price,
and has a fun time doing it sharing that joy daily with visitors.

Wine GueRrilla
6671 Front Street (Highway 116), Forestville, (707) 887-1996
Open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
With its maxim being The Art and Soul of Zinfandel, theres no
mistaking where its at for Wine Guerrilla. Made entirely from Sonoma
County-grown grapes, and distinctly bottled with the splendid musings of
artist Sean Colgan adorning each label, these popular Zins make it worth
a trip for a taste. Enjoy lunch on the charming outdoor patio (gourmet
boxed lunches can be ordered and delivered to the tasting room for $15)
along with your wine purchase.

The Macphail Tasting Lounge invites you to make a day of it at

The Barlow, an urban center that brings together the best winemakers,
food producers and artisans to share their local products and love for
Sonoma County, and make a deep connection with their customers.
James MacPhail, founder and winemaker, shares his passion for
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay by focusing on vineyard-designated,
limited-release wines from Californias finest growing regions, including
the Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley, Green Valley, Anderson Valley,
Sta. Rita Hills, along with the Eola-Amity Hills (Oregon).
A friendly staff takes wine lovers through the nuances of a good
Pinot and Chardonnay by offering an array of seated tastings in an
open, spacious and relaxed setting. Tasting options include: The
Introduction to MacPhail ($20 per person), The Single Vineyard
Tasting which includes a selection of wines, usually Pinot Noirs, from
different appellations ($30 per person) and The Reserve Tasting which
includes a flight of older vintage library, vertical or reserve wines from
the MacPhail Vaults($50 per person).
In addition, guests can now experience one of the most unique
tastings in the wine country. The Terroir Tasting. Inside their Tasting
Lounge, Winemaker James MacPhail has created a Soil Wall showing 8'
cross sections under glass of four vineyards Toulouse, Pratt, Sundawg
and Mardikian. Here they discuss the four key components to James
award-winning Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays soil, clonal selection,
vintage and winemaking style. Everything you wanted to know about
winemaking is bottled in this wine tasting experience. ($30 per person).
The MacPhail Tasting Lounge is a great way to spend your day with
family, friends and local artisans.

Chateau Ador is conveniently located just north of

Santa Rosa on Old Redwood Highway, down the road from Willis
Wine Bar in my humble opinion, one of the best restaurants in
Sonoma County and is easily accessible from Highway 101.
When you pull up to the winery, your first impression is of lots
of white latticework at the gate. The white lattice theme is
continued with a large white trellis-like structure, which shades the
picnic area. A goodly handful of black wrought iron picnic tables
and chairs are scattered about under the trellis, creating a relaxing,
welcoming ambience. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic,
grab a bottle or six of wine and relax and stay a while.
Once inside the winery and tasting room is where visitors may
see (and taste) what makes Chateau Ador different from other local
wineries. A long, granite-topped tasting bar spans the back of the
room. A variety of wines and medals from various wine
competitions are proudly displayed around the room. The overall
atmosphere is bright, cheerful and colorful.
Lets talk about the wines. The 2012 Chateau Ador Chardonnay
is varietally correct, with abundant aromas and flavors of baked
apple, citrus and buttered toast, all wrapped up in a juicy, richly
textured mouthfeel. The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon has received a
Gold Medals in each of three wine competitions. At the 2014
Sonoma County Harvest Fair, Chateau Ador 2012 Pinot Noir and
2012 Chardonnay Estate Reserve each received a Gold Medal. Gold
Medals were also garnered for their 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon and
2009 Merlot at the 2014 China Wine Spirits Awards (CWSA). In
2013, Chateau Ador 2010 Sonoma County Chardonnay, 2009
Sonoma County Pinot Noir and 2009 Sonoma County Merlot each
received Silver Medals.

Brenda Lynch of Mutt Lynch Winery has opened a fabulous

tasting room on the Windsor Town Green a vibrant, tasteful
array of shops and restaurants with upstairs condominiums
clustered around a manicured park. The new tasting room is
large and bright, with avocado green walls, dyed cement floors
and rustic furniture placed around the room. Large windows let
in plenty of Sonoma County sunshine. One wall is dedicated to
photographs of the people, vineyards and wines. A large, granitetopped bar spans the back of the room. The overall vibe in the
tasting room is of relaxed, understated elegance, without an
ounce of pretension.
Brenda is both winery owner and winemaker at Mutt Lynch

array of delicious, award-winning wines. At Mutt Lynch they
measure success in two ways: by the number of charities they

Wine Country doesnt get more real than Sonoma Valley, whose rich
soils mark the birthplace of Californias wine industry. Its also the
closest wine region to San Francisco, just 45 miles north of the
Golden Gate Bridge. Cradled between the Mayacamas and the
Sonoma Mountain ranges, Sonoma Valley encompasses a rolling
patchwork of vineyards, quaint farms and 13,000 acres of scenic
parkland. In the center of town, the eight-acre Sonoma Plaza is a
National Historic Landmark, strewn with sprawling shade trees and
bordered by carefully preserved adobe buildings. Up the road in Glen
Ellen, author and bohemian adventurer Jack London lived and wrote
at his pristine Beauty Ranch, now an 800-acre state historic park.
The historic Sonoma Plaza lies at the heart of Sonoma Valley
gateway region to Sonoma County. Sonoma Plazas done it all
Mexican military outpost, fleeting frontier republic, Spanish Mission
village. Now a gorgeous historic landmark and slow culture
capitol, Sonoma Plaza radiates romance around every corner, cafe
and cobblestone. Whether youre here for an overnight or extended
stay, Sonoma Plaza oers the picture-perfect start (and end) to your
adventures. Its a pedestrian paradise, so ditch the car keys and
discover Real Wine Country on foot or bicycle. The Plazas old adobe
storefronts, meandering alleyways, sunlit courtyards and historic
landmarks hum with an eclectic mix of restaurants, hotels, tasting
rooms, cafes, artisan boutiques, galleries even a vintage movie
house. As for the nature lover, wildflower hikes and stunning hilltop
vistas abound within just a short distance. Anchoring it all is the
tranquil Plaza itself, whose vast green stretches of lawn and
immense tree canopy create a lush setting for picnics, cultural
activities and weekly farmers markets.

First driving into the Valley of the Moon is certainly a lushly sensory experience. Rolling hills, centuries-old Heritage Oaks and verdant vineyards drape the
slopes and valley floor beneath Sonomas majestically craggy Mayacama mountain range. Graceful old country manors and their largely still in-tact
estates dot the countryside while cozy towns still speak to neighborly days gone by.
Kenwood boasts some of the finest artisan wineries in all of Northern California. Ty Caton, Muscardini Cellars, VJB, Mayo Reserve Room, Kenwood
Vineyards, Kunde Estate, Deerfield Ranch, Enkidu, the Annadel Estate, Ledson, St. Francis and Chateau St. Jean are only some of the award-winning,
gorgeous Wine Country Destinations located in and adjacent to Kenwood.
Looking for a break from wine tasting? Enjoy shopping at Vita Bella or browse Swedes Feeds for garden and both large or small pets needs. Splurge on
an ultra-luxurious massage or facial at the Kenwood Inn & Spa. Or simply sit out, pick up a Kenwood Press newspaper and unwind on the patio at Caf

As patrons arrive at Chateau St. Jean they are greeted by an

expansive European-inspired garden. The topiary is a true
spectacle which creates a defined ambiance of both grandeur
and sophistication. The adjacent patio allows patrons to fully
admire the garden even before they have had a chance to taste.
Chateau St. Jean has two tasting room options. The main
tasting room has one of the largest wine-related gift shops in
Sonoma Valley and offers a well-balanced sampling of both
whites and reds. The Vineyard Room, located directly across
from the main tasting room, focuses on Chateau St. Jeans
higher-end wines.
Chateau St. Jean is well known in many wine circles. Total
annual production consists of 45 different wines (17 of which
are distributed). One of its most highly reputable wines is
known as the Cinq Cpages. A winner of countless awards
over the years, the Cinq Cpages is arguably the most complex
wine in Chateau St. Jeans wine repertoire. In fact, for $75 per
person, one can experience all of the different components that
go into the wine with the Cinq Cpages blending seminar. It
lasts roughly one hour and the everyday wine drinker can feel
like an expert as they create their own blend and compete with
other tour members in the Best Blend contest.
Another option is the Promenade Tour and Tasting a
relaxing guided tour of the stunning estate that takes place
daily at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. For $20 per person, an educated
host will teach you the rich history as well as the growing cycle
and the fruit characteristics of several grape varieties while
sipping on some of their finest wines.

This is what visiting Wine Country is all about

roll down the windows, let the fresh country air flow
and meander the scenic winding road past horses,
dairy cows and vineyards, all just to see where the
road might lead.
Today let the road take you to Matanzas Creek
Winery, a place that offers something for the wine
lover, the gardener, the epicurian. Matanzas Creek,
which put the bucolic east Santa Rosa neighborhood
of Bennett Valley on the map, took its name from the
creek that drains away the runoff in the valley. The
area enjoys a unique microclimate among North
Coast appellations, with cooling influences from
several fronts - the Russian River Valley and Petaluma
Gap from the west and southwest, and the San Pablo
Bay to the south and southeast.
Matanzas Creek produces a wide range of wines
that reflect the viticultural diversity of Bennett Valley
and Sonoma County. Currently the winery is
showcasing the Sauvignon Blanc, the perfect Spring

Visitors flock to Matanzas Creek in the spring and
early summer when the lavender fields are in bloom.
The Days of Wine and Lavender event takes place

Laurel Glen Vineyard is a beautiful mountain vineyard

that is well known for producing highly rated Cabernet
Sauvignon wines in the past under the direction of founder
Patrick Campbell. Patrick focused efforts on developing and
producing wines in Lodi and South America and eventually
decided to sell the vineyard. In 2011, Bettina Sichel, a veteran
of the California wine industry, became the steward of Laurel
Glen Vineyard after teaming up with a group of wine lovers
to purchase the iconic estate. She brings over 20 years of
working with the finest producers of Cabernet Sauvignon and
believes that with improved organic farming, more careful
handling of the fruit and gentler fermentation techniques, the
new wines are already noticeably more exciting.
One key upgrade was the addition of the Laurel Glen
Vineyard Tasting Room which is open daily. Guests are
offered two different seated tasting options. For $20, guests
can taste four current release wines and this fee is refundable
with a wine purchase or waived for members of the Laureate
Club. For $30, reserve a Library Wine Tasting and experience
4 vintages of our flagship Laurel Glen Vineyard Estate
Cabernet Sauvignon, spanning at least 10 years of
production. Both tasting experiences offer insight into the
rich history of Laurel Glen as well as their future plans.
Bettina along with her knowledgeable winemakers and team
are on a mission to restore the stylistic elegance with a
balance of acidity and fruit ripeness, finesse and ageability to
their estate Cabernet Sauvignon.

Madrone Vineyards Estate is a true Sonoma icon with a rich

history spanning over 150 years. For the discerning wine lover,
Madrone offers visitors small lot and estate wines in a stunning
location and will be a highlight of any wine county visit.
Visitors can choose to taste wines at the beautiful tasting bar, enjoy
a seated tasting in the elegant new tasting lounge which features food
and wine pairings, or on the patio with incredible views of the
Sonoma countryside. For guests wishing to bring a lunch there is a
designated picnic area and creek-side bocce court. Reservations are
recommended.
This historic property was founded on a portion of the Agua
Caliente Rancho originally given by Governor Juan Alvarado to
Lzaro Pia, a second lieutenant under the command of General M.G.
Vallejo in 1840. In 1863, the ranch was purchased by winemaking
pioneer, George Whitman who planted the first vineyard and
established a new winery which quickly became a cornerstone in
Sonoma winemaking history. In 1883, Whitman sold the ranch to Eli
T. Sheppard, who was the former consul to China and an advisor to
the Emperor of Japan.
In 1941, the Madrone Vineyards Estate was purchased by Italian
sausage makers Enrico Parducci and Peter Domenici. The pair
renamed the estate Valley of the Moon and sparked a new era in
winemaking in Sonoma Valley. In 2012, this historic and beautiful
property came under new ownership and that team is now taking the
lead to bring the story of Sonoma and this incredible property back to
by bonnie Zimmermann
its former glory.

Many years ago when almost everyone thought Zinfandel

was white, I was given a bottle of Ravenswood Zin and
nothing has been the same since. Ever have an epiphany?
Well that was mine and to this day I am eternally grateful.
None of this would have happened without the vision of
Joel Peterson, affectionately known as the Godfather of Zin
who always had a passion for wine. Starting out with a
garage winery and crushing his first four tons of grapes
in 1976 right before a thunderstorm he built Ravenswood
into the largest producer of fine Zinfandel in the world, and
continues to be very hands-on at the winery, and his
dedication and encyclopedic knowledge shows in every
bottle.
Nestled into the foothills of the Mayacamas Range that
divides Sonoma and Napa counties, this fabled winery is
literally at the end of the road. Once you arrive you can take
it all in from their outdoor lounge perhaps with a sampling
of local artisan cheeses to pair with the wines (MaySeptember). Overall it is a fun, light-hearted and friendly
experience, self-described as rural and charmingly rustic
(but not too rustic).
The tasting room staff is passionate about our famous
Zinfandels and enjoys our relaxed and laid-back approach to
presenting single vineyard wines, said tasting room
manager Kristin Wastell. Joel is thoughtful, enthusiastic and
humorous in his approach to life and winemaking. We share
in his joi de vivre and guarantee your visit to Ravenswood
Tasting Room to be as memorable as Joels wines. For over
thirty years, we have lived up to our motto: No Wimpy
Wines! Try them for yoursef!

For true beer lovers, Sonoma Spring Brewing Co. may be one
of the most exciting local breweries growing amongst the vines
of Sonoma Countys wine country. Due to its success, they
recently moved from their modest original location to a multiroom complex just on the outskirts of the city of Sonoma. Head
Brewer, Tim Goeppinger, has more than fifteen years of brewing
experience, and it shows: even the most casual of encounters
finds him waxing with an alchemists precision about hops, malt
and the other esoteric ingredients of beer.
The first thing you may notice upon approaching the brewery
is a group of five tap handles sprouting up from a large, open
window. This walkup growler refill station may very well be the
most ingenious part of the establishment. In a hurry? Dont feel
like being indoors? On your way to a picnic? Worry not! You
can stroll right up to the window, choose your beer, pay the man
and get right back on your way.
If you are in a more sedentary mood, however, the taproom
set to open in early May boasts a much larger selection of
Sonoma Springs offerings. With five barrelheads and upwards of
twenty taps, it serves as a good location to plant oneself and try a
variety of their offerings, including the award-winning Uncle
Jacks Kolsch and Lil Chief IPA, all against the backdrop of an
undeniably brewery-esque brick building. Whether on-the-go or
ready to sit around and talk about some of the finer aspects of
brewing and tasting beer, Sonoma Springs Brewing Co. has a
little of something for every lover of good beer. by Stevie brunolli

Searching for the perfect spot for a wine country picnic and wine
tasting in the heart of Carneros? Then visit Ceja Vineyards! The
hospitality, idyllic location and world-class wines will be a highlight
on any visit to wine country.
Ceja Vineyards is a true American success story. This ultrapremium, Latino family-owned winery was founded by first
generation Mexican-American immigrants in 1999.
In 1967, Amelia Moran and Pedro Ceja met while harvesting
grapes with their families in Oakville. They were both twelve years
old. Amelia recalls, When I tasted my first Merlot grapes I knew that
wine was part of my soul. With a shared enthusiasm for winemaking,
Pedro and Amelia fell in love and married in 1980. Six years later they
joined forces with Pedros brother Armando and his wife Martha to
create Ceja Vineyards. They launched their label in 2001 and
currently produce a portfolio of award-winning wines, all sourced
from their Napa and Sonoma estate-grown grapes.
It is not unusual to run into family members while visiting the
winery, and their passion for food and wine is contagious. By blending
the best of Mexican and American cultures together, the family creates
wines that are great by themselves and pair beatifully with
international cuisine.
Visitors can enjoy and sample a minimum of five wines from the
Ceja portfolio that may include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot
Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Vino de Casa Red
blend. With their warm hospitality, beautiful grounds and delicious
wines, a visit to Ceja will create a new memorable wine country
experience and will offer an opportunity to purchase these stellar
wines. The Ceja Wine Tasting Experience is $20 per person.
Reservations are recommended. Salud!

Located off the historic square, Della Santinas is a familyowned and operated restaurant that has stood the test of time to
become a Sonoma institution. The Della Santina family name
shares a long lineage and history in the Tuscan town of Lucca,
Italy. My father Quirico Salvatore Giovanni Della Santina
migrated from Lucca in 1960.
Residing in the North Beach area of San Francisco, Quirico
became a baker by trade. Later, he was lured to Marin County by
his uncle Adolph to work in the family restaurant: Marin Joes.
After 25 years of successful ownership in a thriving business, he
decided to go out on his own in beautiful Sonoma Valley. Since
1990, we have continued to bring Tuscan country cooking to the
wine country using recipes passed down from my grandmothers
Pia Fontana Della Santina and Clary Gambogi Barsotti.
In 2008, we opened Enoteca Della Santina, a wine bar and
retail wine shop specializing in wines from all over the world.
Enoteca, translated literally in Italian, means wine library a
place for people to enjoy a glass in an Old World ambiance. We
have created a showcase for international as well as local, small
producers.
Our wine club has circumvented the globe looking for value
selections that expand our members palates and knowledge. Day
to day, the bar is a gathering spot for locals and tourists looking
to experience a taste of Sonoma Wine Country living.
