MILAD AN-NABI (Sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) - BIRTH CELEBRATION OF THE

PROPHET MUHAMMAD (peace be upon him) ACCORDING TO THE ISLAMIC
SOURCES

The HOLY PROPHET MUHAMMAD, may the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon
him, the Seal of Prophets (Khatam An-Nabiyyeen), Mercy unto the Worlds (Rahmatullil-
Alameen), the Perfect Model for Mankind (Uswa'e Hasanah), blessed the world with his
birth on the 12th of RABI AL-AWWAL in the Year of the Elephant on 20th or 22nd April
571 A.D. On this auspicious occasion Muslims all over the world celebrate MILAD-UN-
NABI, the BIRTH of the PROPHET MUHAMMAD peace be upon him. This is one of
the happiest days of the Muslim calendar. Some ignorant people claim that celebrating
Milad is not permitted in Islam and that it is an Innovation (Bid'a). Therefore, it is
necessary to briefly explain with evidences from the Islamic sources as to why it is
important to celebrate this special event. Refer to my detailed Book on Milad.

1. Allah the Almighty orders us to express our happiness for the Prophet peace be upon
him and to thank Allah for sending him for the salvation of mankind in the HOLY
QUR'AN, SURAH YUNUS, VERSE 58: ''Of the favour and mercy of Allah let them
rejoice.''

2. As the Holy Prophet peace be upon him was sent as a Mercy to all mankind, it is
compulsory for not only Muslims but also upon all human beings to rejoice in the
Prophet peace be upon him. Allah says in SURAH AL-ANBIYA, VERSE 107: ''We
did not send you except as a Mercy to human beings.''

3. Expressing happiness and celebrating the Prophet peace be upon him's birthday causes
even the unbelievers, by Allah's favour and mercy, to gain some benefit. This is
mentioned in the HADITH BOOK OF SAHIH BUKHARI in the BOOK OF
MARRIAGE.

4. ABU QATADA AL-ANSARI R.A. narrates in SAHIH MUSLIM, in the BOOK OF

FASTING, that the Prophet peace be upon him was asked about the fast of Monday,
and he answered: ''That is the day I was born and that is the day I received the
prophecy.'' Also SAHIH BUKHARI: BOOKS OF FASTING & THE PROPHETS,
CHAPTERS 69 and 24, respectively.

5. IMAM IBN TAYMIYYA permitted Milad in his: MAJMA FATAWA IBN TAYMIYYA.
