Sloop, the three Atchison

County newspapers, Tarkio
Resource Center, Mule Barn
Theatre Guild, Flower Mill,
and many volunteers!
The teams were divided
into three groups. Within
these groups each team was
asked 13 questions in the
first round. These 13 questions were taken from this
years Mark Twain Nominees and one classic book
that totaled 3,188 pages.
Yes, that means that among
their team members, they
needed to each read at least
3-6 books if they decided to
split them up.
The battle began with the
groups of four or five players each competing in different areas of the Resource
Center. The teams heard a
statement about one of the
books and then a specific
team is asked if they can
identify the title of the book.
After the title was answered
correctly, they were asked
to identify the author for an
extra point. As you can see,
lots of careful thought and
analyzing went into their
answers!
The top four teams at the
end of 13 questions moved
on to the championship
round. The championship
round questions were more
difficult and challenging.
The Raccoon Readers from
Tarkio won the championship with a perfect score of
26! Team members included
Mercedes Parshall, Morgan Parshall, Ella Rolf, and
Bryli Staten. Though the
perfect score has happened
before, its a rare feat to accomplish. The second place
finishers were the Rapid
Readers from Rock Port:
RyAnne Herron, Ethan Lucas, and Isabel Heintz. This
team only missed two questions. The third place team
was Mark Madness from
Fairfax: Ian Hedlund, Eric
Gilpin, Devin Guajardo, and
Luke Roberson. The fourth
place team was the Wonder
Walruses from Rock Port:
Jarrett Hunter, Anneliese
Clauson, Teagan Green, and
Riley Walker.
This years top readers were RyAnne Herron,
Ethan Lucas, Isabel Heintz,
and Aubrey Brown. Fifteen
participants read at least 12
of the 13 books, which averaged out to almost 3,000
pages and 19 kids read over
2,000 pages. Each one of the
kids in every group stepped
up and challenged themselves and their teammates
to read beyond the norm
for this competition. This
years groups surpassed last
years total pages read by
reading 82,363 pages! Can
you believe that the first
year the battle was held the
total number of pages was
only 35,401??
The participants were
given a vintage Beanie Baby,
various carnival toys, and a
book of their choice. The participants were also entered
into several drawings for
books and games. Members
of the top four teams were
in a drawing for two $100
bills and the lucky recipients were Isabel Heintz and
Teagan Green. The top four
teams were also awarded
prizes that included a book
for next years competition.
The Atchison County
County competitors worked
very hard to prepare and
they ALL deserve a high
five. Hopefully, this competition has established a
lifetime of love for reading
for the competitors. The
event could not have been a
success without the following volunteers: Jerri Harbin, Dal
las Prather, Teresa
Smith, Susan Slaughter, Bill
Slaughter, Cathy Carter, Isabella Hurst, Margo Ellis,

Linda Lee, Betsy Chapin,

Elizabeth Schmerber, Kayla
Sierks, the local newspapers, Marylyn Wilcox, Beth
Graves, Lois Powell, Katherine Cox, Patty Rolofson,
Anne Amthor, Mark Staten,
Lisa Clement, Ponya King,
and Marissa Hedlund. All of
these volunteers are greatly
appreciated!
