Florence Nightingale (1949) developed the first
theory of nursing which focuses on changing and
manipulating the environment in order to put the patient
in the best possible conditions for nature to act. In
this theory, the importance of pure air, pure water,
efficient drainage, cleanliness and light are stressed.
The theory focuses on letting the patient stay in a
balanced environment. Environmental imbalances allow the
patient to expend unnecessary energy, a factor that
affects the achievement of optimum health.
Calista Roy (1964) presented the Adaptation theory
in which she viewed the person as a unified
biopsychosocial system in constant interaction with the
changing environment and contented that a person is an
adaptive system. It functions as a whole through
independence of its parts. The theory focuses on the
manipulation of the stimuli to promote adaptive
responses. And the goal is the promotion of adaptive
responses in relation to the four adaptive modes, person
adaptation level and focal, contextual and residual
stimuli.
Madeleine Leininger (1925), introduced the theory
of transcultural nursing which focuses on the comparative
study an analysis of cultures with respect to health and
illness caring practices, values and with the goal to
provide meaningful and efficacious nursing care services
to people according to their cultural values and health
and illness context.
