A few Sample Lessons to accompany the Unit Plan


Lesson 1: Intro to library -- Part 1
Objective: Students will learn proper care for books
-Read Mr. Wiggles books (how to listen to a story)
- Show pictures of some not nice books
-Make of list of ways we can take care of books. (use a puppet to assist in
conversation, for engagement).

3.) Clean hands, no food or drink
4.) No dog ears- use a book mark
Introduce students to the coloured book bins:
Students take books from the coloured bin, practice taking care of the books and
reading on the couch

Lesson 2: Intro to Library part 2


Objective: How to take books off the shelf and put them back
Review: Book care/ Library expectations

How to browse books: Explain each books has an address, a special place it
is kept.
Show students how to pull a book out, decide they dont want it, and lay it
flat on shelf. (Ask student not to put it back, or leave it on the floor.)
Show the special places to put books
Have students practice taking a book from the shelf, showing their book
care rules and then practice putting the book in the special shelf spots.

Lesson 3: Checking out books


Objective: Students will learn about their library cards and how to check out a book
Review: How to browse on the shelves.

Teach students:

students sit around the circulation desk


Show students how we use the computer to check in and check out books.
The scanner is for the teachers only
Use a few examples cards, shows students how the card allows their name to
appear on the computer.

Students get to browse books and check out their first library book. (have books
prepared on a table for students to check out, or they can choose from the shelf)
Show students each book has barcode and to have the barcode facing up
After all students check out a book sing the song..I take my book home with
care and bring it back on _________ (to the tune of This is the way I brush my
teeth)

Lesson 4: Parts of a book-1


Objective: Students will be able to identify the difference between the author and
the title.
Review: Parts of the book

Before Reading; ask students if they can locate the title. Then have students
locate the Authors name.
Read the story

After the story, ask the students do all books have an author? Do all
books have a title? What does an author do? Why do books need a
title?
Ask students about Dr Seuss are he the title or author? (show students
where Dr. Seuss books are)

Have books on table; invite children to find a book and then ask them to point to
the title on the book, and to the authors name (children may not be able to read,
but they can still identify the location).
(Introduce students to books display area- Displays are for touching)
Check out books:
After Check out children share their book choice with the class, pointing to the title
and author

Lesson 5: Parts of a book -3


Objective: Students will learn the difference between an author and an illustrator
Review: Review Author and title

Read a story that has both an author and illustrator.


Explain that sometimes it takes two people to make a book
Students sort through books to find a book with both an author and
illustrator

Have selection of books with some of my favourite illustrators. Book Talk some of
the books with beautiful pictures.
