NComputing IP Utility (NIU) for vSpace

vSpace
NIU Key Features
Creates a unique virtual network adapter for each vSpace virtual
desktop session, dynamically associating a unique IP address for
every user
Isolates all network traffic coming from each virtual desktop
Supports dynamic assignment of IP addresses via DHCP for both
the X-series and L-series
Supports static IP address assignment for the X-series
Enables certain third party network applications to function in a
vSpace multi-user environment
Includes NIU console to show user session to virtual NIC mapping

Overview

Separate virtual network adapter configuration

With NComputing systems, multiple users share a single

PC and share the same IP address. However, some third
party software applications were developed with the
expectation that each user is running on a separate PC
with a unique IP address. These applications may not
function as intended if multiple users share one IP
address. NIU can resolve this situation for many of these
applications by giving each virtual desktop its own unique
virtual network adapter.

All the virtual network interfaces created by NIU can be

viewed and have their properties controlled using the
Windows Control Panels Network Connections applet.
Each virtual network adapter is created using a Device
Name convention of NIU Miniport Driver nn,

NIU is separately installed to run alongside NComputing

vSpace software and can be used with vSpace on
Windows platforms for the L-series or X-series access
devices.

Allows
llows user network tracking by session
Some third party network applications need to uniquely
identify the source of IP packets sent from a host
computer. NIU can enable these applications to function in
a vSpace multi-user virtual desktop environment*.

One network interface for multiple IP addresses

Although all vSpace virtual desktop sessions use one
physical network adapter on the host system, NIU
dynamically assigns a new virtual network adapter to each
vSpace session, and each virtual network adapter then
obtains its own unique real IP address. From the networks
point of view, each virtual desktop session and the
applications in each session are isolated from the hosts IP
address. Each vSpace session is also network isolated
from all other sessions running on the same host. NIU
virtual network adapters support all standard networking
capabilities including the ability for individual sessions to
communicate via IP protocol with applications running
inside other sessions on the host.

Control Panel Network Connections shows NIU vNICs

and you can use the standard Windows network property

controls to configure any or all of the virtual network
adapters to use static IP addresses (persistent on X-series
only).

NIU Console
The NIU add-on for vSpace contains its own NIU console
separate from the vSpace Administration Console. The
NIU console provides current user state and session
mapping information about the combined NIU and vSpace
environment.
