PRODUCT FEATURES

JIB CRANES
Motivation's free standing, axial rotation or wall column
mounted jib cranes range to 30,000 lbs. capacity, utilizing
boom lengths to 30 feet. All cranes are manufactured to the
highest standards and are tested to 125% or rated capacity.

GANTRY CRANES
Motivation provides the choice of fixed, fully adjustable,
manual or powered and steerable powered gantries. These
versatile units can be free wheeling or track mounted with
lifting capacities to 30,000 lbs. Motivation gantries offer an
alternative to overhead bridge cranes.

FLOOR CRANES
Motivation's "pick and carry" floor cranes provide the
operator with a flexible lifting capability. Floor cranes with
lifting capacities to 11,000 lbs. are available in folding
knockdown, reversible rigid mast, swivel mast and fully
powered models.

CHECKERBOOM - CRANE BOOM

Motivation's craneboom quickly transforms a standard
forklift to a versatile mobile lift and carry crane, doubling the
usefulness of the lift truck. A simple forklift attachment
converts the fork truck to a simple but safe crane with a
lifting capacity up to 10,000 lbs. (based on forklift
specifications).

PALLET LIFTERS
Four basic models of pallet lifters, fixed or adjustable form
the basis for Motivation's pallet lifter line. All standard and
special models are built to the highest specifications and are
tested to 150% of capacity rating.

COIL HOOKS
Motivation's "slimline" coil hook saves weight and space, and
provides easy operation. A special curved lifter plate fits the
contour of the coil opening to prevent damage. Provided in
counterbalance models, Motivation covers the complete
range of coil hooks.

SPREADER BEAMS
Motivation manufactures lifting beams and spreader beams to
cover a wide range of lifting requirements. Standards are
designed for low headroom applications, fixed models, fully
adjustable units and special applications. Beam capacitities
range to 40,000 lbs. but units up to 100 tons have been
designed.

DUMPERS
Motivation designs and manufacturers a wide variety of
hydraulic box and barrel dumpers. A number of very special
application units have been developed. The standard designs
range from simple box dumper to highly complex "reach"
dumpers, with capacities exceeding 5000 lbs.

INTRODUCTION

PROVEN DESIGN
Motivation Industrial Equipment has been designing and manufacturing gantry cranes and lifting
equipment continuously since 1968. Thousands of Checkerboom gantry cranes, pedestal cranes, floor
cranes and jib cranes are in regular service, many at some of the largest manufacturers, utilities,
government and military establishments in North America. All design, engineering and fabricating is done
by Motivation in Motivation's own facilities.
SAFETY
Motivation's goal has always been to design and manufacture quality equipment to industrial standards.
Motivation gantry cranes are designed to meet applicable sections of CSA S16-1969 standard and CMAA
specification No. 74-1987. The maximum calculated deflection does not exceed (span/600) where the span
is given in inches. Material for all gantry cranes shall conform to CSA G40.21-87 Structural Quality Steels,
minimum grade 44W steel. All Motivation gantry cranes are welded in accordance with CSA W47.1-1983
and CWB W59-1989. Motivation is certified to CSA W47.1. CASTERS ARE DESIGNED TO TAKE THE
FULL RATED CAPACITY OVER ONE A-FRAME. The included safety factor provides a margin of
strength to allow for variations in the properties of materials and manufacturing and is not intended to
provide authorization or protection for users to load the crane above the rated capacity. Standard equipment
is designed for industrial use, not for lifting of human cargo.
STABILITY
For optimum stability of the gantry, the ratio of the height under the beam to the overall width of the base is
2:1. This ratio must be maintained when adjusting adjustable height gantries.
QUALITY AND PRICE
Although Motivation Gantry cranes are very competitively priced, quality has not been sacrificed.
Competitive pricing and quality results from Motivations specialization in gantries, jib cranes, and related
products, all in regular production, with facilities expressly geared to this production. Welders and fitters
are second to none in experience and workmanship. All material is thoroughly checked before fabrication
and all welds are closely inspected. Dimensions and weights shown are approximate. In the continued
search for product improvement, Motivation reserves the right to change specifications without notice.

WARRANTY
Every Motivation crane is inspected before shipment and is guaranteed against defects in workmanship and
materia1 for a period of twelve months from the date of shipment.

GANTRY SELECTION - HOW TO ORDER

CAPACITY
Determine required capacity based on heaviest load to be lifted. Full allowance has been made for the
weight of a normal electric hoist and trolley.
SPAN
Select span to accommodate load size and working area.
CLEAR SPAN
Ensure that span between braces is sufficient to accommodate load size and working area.
UNDER BEAM HEIGHT
Select height under beam to ensure sufficient clear height. Allow for height of load, hoist and trolley, any
additional height required to accommodate slings, spreader beams, or any other lifting equipment, plus the
required height of lift.
OVERALL HEIGHT
Check to ensure gantry will clear any overhead obstruction, passage or doorway. An adjustable rather than
a fixed gantry or optional non-standard dimensions may be required.
ADJUSTABLE vs. FIXED HEIGHT GANTRY
Adjustable gantries are ideal for variable lifting height requirements, unequal floor heights, or where
overhead clearances may be limited. Fixed height gantries are lower in cost lighter in weights and easier to
assemble than adjustable height gantries. They are ideal for plate-based mounting, semi-permanent
installations, and applications not requiring adjustable height and or leg width.

Select options as required for the application.
SPECIALS
Intermediate capacities, heights, spans and widths are available at minimal additional cost. Because
Motivation offers such a wide range of gantries, space only permits listing some of the most popular styles,
sizes, and configurations. Other sizes and configurations are also available at prices well below custom

SWAY-LOCK

When the gantry is used in one location, the sway lock can be adjusted to secure the self-aligning
beam in position. If the gantry is being moved about frequently, the sway-lock should not be set,
then the beam will automatically adjust to each location.

WHEELS

Motivation gantries are supplied with four bolt-on swivel casters with ball bearing swivel brackets
and semi-steel wheels with roller bearing axles. Wheel brakes are standard. Only single casters are
used, allowing easier swiveling. Caster capacity is sufficient to support the rated capacity
directly over one pair of casters.
Four position swivel locks are available for all gantries to facilitate straight line travel.
Polyurethane, phenolic, V-groove or flanged wheels are available for many sizes and capacities. Vgroove wheels can run on concrete floor as well as on inverted angle track.

PAINT

Motivation gantry cranes receive a final coat of rust inhibiting Motivation medium blue gloss
machine enamel.

ADJUSTABILITY

Adjustable gantries are height adjustable in 6" increments. Safety chain on spreader prevents overextension when adjusting gantry width.

CANTILEVER CONFIGURATION

For a cantilever lift, the gantry can be supplied with the optional beam clamps to allow the beam
adjustable extension beyond the legs, or the gantry can be ordered with standard welded brackets,
providing a specified cantilever extension.

CANTILEVER SAFETY

The normal safe limit of the cantilever extension is one third (113) of the beam length and one half
(112) the rated capacity of the gantry. The opposite end of the gantry will require either a
counterweight or a means of anchoring the gantry to the floor Both Motivation fixed and
adjustable gantries are suitable for cantilever applications.

JACKING KIT

Optional Ratchet jacks can be used with adjustable height gantries to adjust the height without the
need for any other overhead lifting device. A minimum of two are required, used alternately
amongst the four legs.

the width between the legs and between the leg braces at the lower flange ('J' dimension in charts) may not
be sufficient to allow some trolleys and/or hoists to travel to the end of the beam. This dimension must be
checked carefully if travel to the end of the beam is required. A different trolley or special wide leg and leg
bracing to beam attachments may be necessary.

Are available instead of welded leg and leg brace attachment, permitting adjustable span and
cantilever configurations. Beam clamps are required with optional aluminum beam. If desired, leg
bracing can be changed to angle out instead of in, reducing the clear span between the legs
accordingly.

ADJUSTABLE SPAN

Can be provided by ordering the gantry with the optional beam clamps.

TRACK

2" x 2" x 1/4" inverted angle track mounted to flat bar is standard with anchor bolt holes
alternately positioned every 30" for lagging the track to the floor. ASCE crane rail or heavy flat
bar track is recommended for capacities over 10 Tonnes.

GUIDE RAIL

For trackless operation, a guide rail can be installed on one side only for straight line adherence,
with regular casters running on the floor. FOR LOADS OF 2 TONNES AND OVER, A POWER
DRIVE SYSTEM IS RECOMMENDED.

POWER DRIVE

Power drive wheels with a soft start and a brake option can be installed at each end of the gantry.

MOUNTING PLATE

Mounting plates can be supplied in place of casters for semi-permanent or permanent gantry
installations. These are ideal for cantilever applications, loading docks, etc. If required, spreader
bars can be eliminated to free up floor space and working area when the gantry is adequately
anchored to the floor.

HOISTS

Available hoists include hand chain, electric, or air powered. Hoist must match gantry capacity,
power source, required headroom (hook to underside of beam). Suitable lifting speed must also be
specified.

TROLLEY

'P' Style, Plate Base, Free Standing, 360 Rotation. Most

popular style of jib crane in use today. Boom on top of
column provides maximum clearance under boom with
minimum overall height.
P
'C' Style, Concrete or Sleeve Base, Free Standing, 360
rotation. All desirable features of' 'P' style. Can be
permanently set in concrete with no bolts, flanges or gussets
at floor level, or sleeve mounted for ease of installation and
removal.
C

'P-SB' Style, Plate Base, Tie-Rod Suspension Bracing, Free

Standing. Economical, ideal for applications requiring
180/220 boom rotation or less. Maximum trolley travel.

COLLECTOR RINGS

POWER ROTATION
is available for all styles of jib cranes; fully assembled, semiassembled or in kit form. Standard boom tip speed is
approximately 33 feet per minute. Includes motor; starter,
clutching, speed reduction, sprockets, chain; mounting,
guards and cover plates, control panel and junction box,
hisible disconnect and interconnecting wiring. Manually
cranked rotation with gear reducer and hand wheel is also
available.
POWER ROTATION

ROTATION STOPS
are available at extra cost for both manual or power rotation.
Power rotation limit switches complete with brackets are also

SLEEVE BASE
for 'C', 'C-SB' and 'C-BQ' concrete mounted cranes can be

be provided, enabling crane to be re-installed at alternative
locations.
