Prayer to St George the Great Holy Martyr

O Most Praised Great Holy Martyr and Wonderworker, Saint
George:
Look down upon us with Thy speedy Help and implore the
Mankind-Loving God not to Condemn us sinners
according to our offences, but that He treat us according
to His Great Mercy.
Despise not our Prayer, but beseech on our behalf our Lord
Jesus Christ our Saviour and our God - for a Quiet Life
that is pleasing to God, for healthy body and soul, for
fertility of the Earth and abundance in all, and that we
not turn to evil purposes all the Good Things granted by
Thee from our All-merciful God, but that they may be for
the Glory of His Holy Name, for the Glorification of Thy
Mighty Intercession.
May He grant God-Loving Soldiers Victory over the enemy,
and may He Bless our land with unchanging Peace and
Prosperity.
At our Departure from this life, may He Guard us from the
snares of the evil one, that we may stand Uncondemned
before the Throne of our Lord of Glory.
Hear us, O Passion-Bearer of Christ, Saint George, and pray
ceaselessly for us to the Master of All - God in Three
Persons - that by His Grace and Love for mankind, and by
Thy Help and Intercession, we may find Mercy and may
stand with the Angels and Archangels before the AllGlorious Judge, unceasingly praising Him, together
with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and
unto the Ages of ages.
Amen.

ST GEORGE

THE

GREAT HOLY MARTYR

St George, the Great, Glorious Trophy-bearing Holy Martyr was a Roman Soldier
who was martyred for his Christian Faith according to the merciless order of the
pagan Emperor, Diocletian, at the beginning of the Fourth Century.
Although he was born in Cappadocia, his mother was a Palestinian Christian,
which has made St George a favourite Saint of the Palestinian Christians. St
George is the Patron Saint of Moscow, Georgia and England, as well as various
other Faithful Christian countries.
The Eastern Orthodox Christian Church commemorates St George on 23 April and
the Translation of his Holy Relics on 3 November.
As 23 April often falls within Holy Week, the Feast of St George is then transferred to a
later date, after Paschal Sunday.
St George was born into a devout Christian family. His father was from Cappadocia
and served as an Officer of the Roman Army, while his mother was from Lydda,
Palestine, to which she returned as a widow with her young son after the
Martyrdom of her husband, where she provided St George with a respectable
education and raised him in Christian Piety.
Following the example of his Father, St George joined the Roman Army after he
came of age, proving to be a charismatic warrior, who quickly rose through the
Military Ranks.
By his late twenties, St George had gained the honourable titles of Tribunus
(Tribune) and Comes (Count.)
St George was stationed in Nicomedia as a member of the personal guard attached
to Emperor Diocletian who reigned between 284 305.
In 303, Diocletian issued a most terrible Edict that authorised the systematic
persecution and murder of Christians throughout his section of the Roman
Empire.
Emperor Galerios who reigned over the other section of the Roman Empire was
supposedly responsible for this most heinous decision, which continued
throughout his reign during the years 305-311.
St George was ordered to fulfil the Imperial Orders of the persecution and execution
of millions of Christians in Nicomedia, which he refused to do and instead he
Confessed himself as being a Faithful Christian.
Furthermore, he publically dared to criticise the Imperial Decreee of Persecution
against the innumerable innocent citizens of Nicomedia and elsewhere.
Emperor Diocletian, as expected, was outraged by the bold audacity of one of his
most highly honoured Roman Officers.
St George was immediately arrested and subjected to indescribable torture before
being executed and thereby Spiritually Perfected by his decapitation on 23
April 303.
St George is known as Trophy or Victory Bearer, not only for his military
achievements, but for so calmly, bravely and faithfully enduring Martyrdom.
Having witnessed the extraordinary Courage and Serenity of St George by the
Grace of God - while enduring his Holy Martyrdom, Empress Alexandria, the
wife of Emperor Diocletian, and Athanasios, a pagan priest, as well as many
other witnesses were converted to Christianity most of whom subsequently
suffered their own Holy Martyrdom.
The Sanctified body of St George was returned to Lydda for burial, where many
Divine Miracles occurred through his Intercessory Prayers.
St George is often depicted spearing a dragon or a strange serpentine creature,
while seated upon his horse. This comes from an Miraculous Account when St
George appeared on his horse and saved the Youths from being offered as
sacrifices to an unknown beast that would devour them.
F E S T A L M A T I N S S ER V IC E - S T G E O R G E T H E G R E A T M A R T Y R 23 A P R I L (A F T E R H O L Y P A S CH A S UN DA Y ]

3.

The details vary according to the region, but the basic report is that a deadly
creature made its lair at the spring or lake that provided the town or city with
water.
Consequently, in order to collect water every day, the citizens had to distract and
temporarily remove the creature from its lair. So they would sacrifice one of
their youths either male or female which were chosen by drawing lots.
Eventually, the daily sacrifice was the local Princess or a certain young woman who
was dearly beloved, for whom many Prayers were offered.
Before the beast could devour the young maiden, St George had appeared on his
horse and after loudly praying for Divine Assistance from the Holy Trinity, he
immediately slayed it with his spear, thereby Delivering the young girl from
harm and stopping the dreadful daily human sacrifices.
As a result of this Divine Miracle, 25,000 relieved and most grateful citizens
renounced their ancestral paganism and converted to Christianity.
This account, however, may or may not be taken literally, for the battle between St
George and the creature the dragon may actually represent the continuous
Spiritual Warfare between Faithful Christians and the obsessively jealous Satan,
or that ancient battle between St Michael the Holy Archangel of God and
Lucifer, when the evil one was banished from Heaven.
Dragon slaying was a common theme used to explain our ceaseless Spiritual Battle
agains the machinations of the evil one especially pertaining to the Spiritual
Warfare of Good and evil - Faithful Christians versus everything that is wicked
and destructive.
St George is most commonly depicted in early Holy Icons, mosaics and fescoes (wall
Icons) wearing the Armour of a Roman Soldier.
After the fall of Constantinople and the association of St George with the devastating
western Crusaders, he is more often portrayed mounted upon a white horse.
After the destruction of the great city of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade and
its ungodly Crusaders, St George was associated with St Demetrios of
Thessalonika, another early Holy Martyr who had been a highly honoured
Roman Soldier. They are often portrayed together or mounted upon their horses
and thus they are likened to Earthly manifestations of the Holy Archangels, St
Michael and St Gabriel.
St George, especially, is equated to St Michael the Archangel as many Holy Icons of
St Michael also portry him on a horse, slaying a dragon.
St George is always depicted on a white horse, while St Demetrios is depicted on a
red horse. Sometimes, if the Holy Icon is very old, the red of the horse appears to
be black.
In Lydda, Palestine, his mothers birthplace, a church was built that was dedicated
to St George, which contained his Holy Relics. Many Divine Miracles have
occurred there through the Intercessory Prayers of St George on behalf of those
who seek his assistance.
Both that ancient church, which was constructed during the reign of St Constantine
the Great during his reign in 305 337 and the Translation of St Georges Holy
Relics are Commemorated on 3 November.
Another Holy Church of St George, which is associated with the Monastery of Christ
of Symvoulas, Cyrpus, has been recently constructed and has been named: St
George of Symvoulas in honour of an ancient Holy Icon bearing the same
name, which is associated with many Miraculous Healings due to the
Intercessory Prayers of St George the Great Holy Martyr.
May his Memory be Eternal and may St George continue to pray for all Faithful
Christians for our Salvation and our Deliverance from the evil one, especially

Today, Salvation comes to the
