On the hunt!

Schools see strong results

in Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math
By BRIGIT BAUMA

At Moorestown Township Public Schools, Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math education,
also known as STEM, has been
making great strides these past
few years. STEM education focuses on these areas together not
only because the skills and
knowledge in each discipline are
essential for student success, but
also because these fields are
deeply intertwined in the real
world and in how students learn
most effectively.
Within the Moorestown Township Public Schools system, the
success of STEM can be seen in
both in and outside of school activities. The Moorestown High
School FIRST Robotics Team has
been selected to participate in the
Mid-Atlantic Region Championship; several students have participated in the Coriell Science
Fair, winning multiple awards;
the William Allen Middle School
MathCounts team gained first

The Lenola Volunteer Fire Company and the Moorestown Business Association joined together for an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday,
April 4. Children were invited to Jeff Young Field to hunt for eggs, have faces painted and take pictures with the Easter Bunny, Easter
Chick and Sparky of the Lenola Fire Company. Here, Kelsey Bizler, 1, checks out her Easter egg loot. For more photos, see page 20.

MHS class presidents senior Brian Trainer, junior Robert McGarity,

sophomore Kevin Hughes and freshman Joey DiMarino wear the colors of their respective classes for MHSs Color Clash. The presidents
help to coordinate the selling of t-shirts for each grade and events
for the day of Color Clash, which took place on April 2.

Moorestown High School was

splashed with color on April 2,
the day before spring break for
the schools. Up and down the hallways were the colors of orange,
blue, green and red, all worn by
different grade levels in support
of a class-unifying and altruistic
event.
In its fourth year, MHS held its
annual Color Clash event, which
brought all classes together to
raise money for a charitable
cause and have a fun day full of
activities. This year, MHS students chose to raise money by
selling t-shirts and collecting an
extra $1 per shirt for breast cancer research in honor of a staff
member who was diagnosed with
breast cancer last year. The
school ended up raising more
than $1,500.
Its designed to unify the classes in an event and charity they
support. They choose the charity, Lisa Trapani, Color Clash coordinator, said.
Im new to it, but it sounds
like a great event for the school to
come together and support something greater, such as a charity,
freshman class president Joey DiMarino said.
In the past, classes have given
money to Ronald McDonald
House, families affected by a bus
crash and for building a park.
The main premise of the day
is that it is a day of charity and a
day of giving back to the community, senior class president Brian
Trainer said.
Students raise money by selling different colored t-shirts for
each class, asking for an extra
dollar per shirt to donate toward
the charity of choice.
We figured, were big enough
here at Moorestown, if we receive
a dollar a kid we would be able to
make a significant donation,
Trainer said.

With the weather getting

warmer and April commonly
known to bring rain, the darling
buds of trees and flowers might
start to make their appearance
soon, if they havent already.
However, for Moorestown resident Kathleen Dickey, she didnt
want her flower to bloom so late.
She needed her orchid to bloom
for the Philadelphia Flower Show,
held earlier in the year from Feb.
28 to March 8.
Luckily for her, her phalaenopsis hybrid, also known as cascading orchid, bloomed at just the
right time and earned her the
honor of a blue ribbon at the
flower show. For her first time
competing at the Philadelphia
Flower Show, Dickey won first
place in phalaenopisis hybrid or

THE MOORESTOWN SUN APRIL 814, 2015

in our opinion

Stay local this summer

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

The message may be old, but its worth repeating, even if it is only early April

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

e seem to often preach how

important it is to stay local
for the summertime. And
thats because its true. The 102 days
between Memorial Day and Labor Day
weekends are crucial for the Jersey
Shore, which, no matter where you
live in our fine state, has a vital impact
on our economy.
The devastation that was caused by
Hurricane Sandy seems like a distant
memory, but some Shore towns are
still fighting to fully recover. Those
that have recovered still desperately
need visitors; they still need our support.
Beach Season 2013, the one immediately following Sandy, was not a good
one. As if rebuilding from Sandy wasnt bad enough, an incredibly wet June
kept visitors away from the Shore dur-

ing prime weekends. Sales for stores

that year in the hardest-hit areas were
off anywhere from 20-40 percent, according to state economic reports. Gov.
Christies office estimated companies
lost more than $63 million in business
due to the storm.
Last year got a little better, but it
wasnt back to pre-storm numbers. A
Tourism Economics report, presented
by the state Division of Travel and
Tourism, found that visitors to the
Shore rose 4.4 percent statewide last
year, but spending didnt keep pace, in-

creasing only 3.7 percent. Direct

tourism employment fell 1.3 percent,
the first time it declined since 2010, but
that was mainly due to hard times in
Atlantic City.
So whats the message here? Its simple: Visit the Shore this summer, visit
often, and spend money there.
New Jersey residents often take our
coastline for granted, but we should
realize how lucky we are to have such
a gem this close to home. So lets pay it
back this summer. As hard as it may
seem to fathom, there are only six
weeks until the official start of the
summer beach season, but there is
still plenty of time to plan your summer vacation at the Jersey Shore.
The beach towns need your support.
Lets all dedicate at least part of our
summer to giving back.

event? Whether you take part in an annual
volunteer effort, volunteer every week or
have traveled the world to help others, The
Sun wants to publish your story.
We would also love to hear from volunteer organizations, those non-profits that
depend on volunteers to get by day-to-day.

Do you have a special volunteer you would

like to acknowledge? Let us know.
Whatever your story, were calling on
you to send it in so we can share it with
everyone. Send in your volunteer story, and
a photo of you or your volunteers hard at
work, to our news email, which is listed to
the right. Watch for your stories in an upcoming issue of The Sun.

Camp to students ages 12 to 18.
The Special Needs Summer Program has provided services to
students up to sixth grade for the
last decade. This year, with the
help of Sean Fischel Connect,
these students who have aged
out of the original program are
now able to continue their summers in the loving and supportive
arms of the Special Needs Camp
and its staff. Special Needs Summer Program will be divided into
two specific age groups: ages 5 to
13, students transitioning to first
through sixth grades, and ages 12
to 18, students transitioning from
sixth grade through 12th grade.
The Special Needs Summer Pro-

gram will run Monday, July 6

through Friday, July 31 with Mondays through Thursdays 12:30
p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Fridays 8:30
a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Professionals, certified teachers, educators and para-professionals oversee each program and
are aided by trained and carefully
selected counselors and volunteers in the CIT Jobs Training
Program. Each program boasts
the best combination of staffing
available. This combination with
the departments relationships
with local non-profits and organizations allows the Moorestown
Department of Parks and Recreation Summer Programs to be
among the best in the state.

tured it for almost four years, and
brought it to this point. It was
great to win and celebrate the orchid; it was a happy time. Im so
happy with the joy it brought to
everyone, Dickey said.
Dickeys love for plants and

gardening began with her father.

Growing up, he always had a wonderful garden, according to Dickey. As a child, she was consistently involved in the gardening and
nurturing of plants.
Her love blossomed for gardening, which culminated with Dickey joining the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, based in
Philadelphia. Working all over
Philadelphia and her love for orchids, it just made sense for her to
join with others who shared her
love.
Im now excited to work with
them and volunteer, it is a wonderful organization, Dickey said.
Dickey was handed her awardwinning orchid as a small, blossomless plant four years ago,
struggling to survive. She repotted it, fertilized it and gave it humidity and moving air, nurturing
it back to health. The orchid
gained back its strength and
bloomed many times for Dickey,
lasting several months at a time.
From the encouragement and
insistence of her horticultural society friends, Dickey decided to
enter her flower. She originally
was encouraged the previous

year to enter,
but Dickey felt
it was too late
to enter her
orchid at that
time.
This
year,
with
some
extra
care and the
orchid blooming at just the
DICKEY
right
time,
Dickey decided to enter.
It is a good thing she did, as she
won first place. She didnt find
out about the win herself, either;
a friend of a friend saw the award
and sent her a photo of the orchid
with a blue ribbon.
I didnt know what I would
get. I was overjoyed. My friends
were going crazy with my win.
They were so proud with someone from the society winning. It
was very exciting. I was glad to
share it with all of those who encouraged me, Dickey said.
Dickey would love to do the
Philadelphia Flower Show again,
but for now, she plans to stick to
orchids and focus on growing and
nurturing them for the next show.

of those tote stacks, and properly
disposing pool noodles that represent litter. The ability to work
among three teams in one alliance is very important.
The Lemons participated in the
Mid Atlantic Hartboro-Horsham
District and Seneca District. In
the Hartboro-Horsham competition on Feb. 27-28, the team
ranked 16 out of 37 teams, but
was unfortunately not chosen to
participate in the Elimination
Match. Then during the Seneca
District competition on March 2122, the team was invited to join
the alliance of FRC1640 Sab-BotAge and FRC1218 Vulcan Robotics. Their alliance's strong performance had led them to be the
winning alliance, thus they have
been selected to participate in the
Mid Atlantic Region Championship in Lehigh University,
Bethlehem, Pa., on April 9-11. In

addition to being in the winning

Alliance, the Lemons also received the Imagery Award in
Honor of Jack Kamen in this
Seneca Competition.
At the end of the season,
FRC5113 was ranked 36th out of
110 teams in the Mid Atlantic region.
The HS robotics team, which is
a school club, has two teacher advisors, Ed Wright, who teaches
honors robotics and lasers elective and Honors Engineering and
Design course, and Zack Bross,
who teaches AP physics and
Physics, along with 54 students
during this season, which is a significant increase from 30 students
last year.
After doing robotics, youre
pretty confident you want to work
in the STEM field. FIRST can
help you with scholarships,
knowledge on how to use lots of
the tools, and how to be an engineer. It also helps you learn to
work with a group, so you can
work well with your peers once
you get into college and beyond,

Kartik Bhardwaj said.

FIRST is basically all about
STEM. Besides building the robot
itself, our basic goal is to promote
STEM in the community, Kathie
Jin said.
There is a long list of scholarships offered by partners of
FIRST. Some 92 percent come
from college/universities, and the
rest from corporations, foundations and associations. In January, there were 175 scholarship
providers which amounted to
more than $20 million in potential
college scholarships. Sixty-six
percent of these scholarships
were for those majoring in STEM.
Moorestown has also seen success with the Coriell Science Fair.
According to the Coriell website,
Coriell Institute for Medical Research has hosted its annual Science Fair, showcasing the very
best of South Jersey's science
programs. Students from Burlington, Camden and Gloucester
counties in grades six through 12

PACE, a committee promoting
learning and understanding about
giftedness and finding ways to
support gifted youngsters and
their families, held its annual noncompetitive science fair on March
31 where more and more students
are participating each year. Starting six years ago, children from
kindergarten and up were invited
to participate in the fair and do research on anything that they
wished, using the scientific
method. Children who start young
many times continue to participate in the science fair and eventually work their way up to the competitive Coriell Science Fair.
Another success in STEM, the
WAMS
MathCounts
team,

coached by WAMS math teachers

Allison Longmuir and Tara Kortman, took first place in the regional MathCounts competition
for the third year in a row. It was
held on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Ocean
County College in Toms River.
Ten teams and 65 individuals
competed from both Ocean and
Burlington counties.
William Allen Middle School
dominated the individual round,
claiming five out of the top 10 individual places. Among the top 10
were John Borton (second),
Rishab Ayyapath (fourth), Josh
Tsai (fifth), Greg Bauman (sixth)
and Dipro Ray (seventh). Borton
and Ayyapath will proceed to the
state level as individuals. As a
team representing William Allen
Middle
School
and
Burlington/Ocean County in the
team competition, Borton, accompanied by teammates Ray, Tsai
and Bauman, competed in the
state MathCounts competition on
March 14 at Rutgers University.
They did not win, however, they
still did quite well at states.

The sophomore class bumps the ball back to the freshman class at
the giant volleyball event during Color Clash. At the end of the day,
the grades came together to play games like giant volleyball, pizza
box carry and giant bowling. Color Clash allowed classes to build not
only class unity in the games, but school unity by raising money towards breast cancer in t-shirt sales starting in mid-March.

This year, it is really hitting

home with MHS because they
chose a charity that has affected
one of their staff members. After
being diagnosed with breast cancer and getting treatments with
Dr. Amy Clark, an oncologist at
the University of Pennsylvania,
the students decided to raise
money toward Clarks own individual breast cancer research.
The staff member, who wished to
remain unidentified, felt very
humbled and happy the students
were raising money to find a cure
for breast cancer and that they
knew exactly where the money
was going.
New to Color Clash this year
was the No Texting While Driving program. Run by school police officer Bryan Wright, a few
kids from each grade came together to create a program to
raise awareness about how texting and driving could affect the
community. This involved taking
pledges, doing different activities
and spreading awareness. There
was also the No Texting While
Driving logo on the sides of the
t-shirts that were sold.
Color Clash began with an assembly given by Dr. Michael Fal-

lon, who spoke to the students

about not being invisible to yourself or anyone around you, having respect for everybody else and
being your own person.
One thing we also stress during Color Clash is class unity and
self-unity within the community.
Although we are raising awareness for charities, we also think
about our personal selves and
how we can make each other better, junior class president Robert
McGarity said. He did a really
good job of talking to us and
reaching deep into our minds. We
really appreciate it. It was a very
touching assembly.
The students went throughout
their day on a shorter schedule so
the really fun activities of Color
Clash could begin. The last hour
of the day, students and teachers
came together in one of the gyms
to play giant volleyball, pizza box
carry and giant bowling, along
with a little teacher surprise activity. Students and teachers
played together in each grade to
have fun in each activity.
Its a fun time to hopefully get
the crowd laughing and happy,
and culminate the entire school at
the end of the day, Trainer said.
Ultimately, students had a fun
time cheering on classmates and
teachers and were proud to hear
that they raised more than $1,500
for the fight against breast cancer.
