Introduction of Engineering College, KUAS

There are five departments and one graduate institute in the college: Chemical and Materials
Engineering Department, Civil Engineering Department, Mechanical Engineering Department,
Mold and Die Engineering Department, Industrial Engineering and Management Department, and
Graduate Institute of Applied Science and Engineering. Each department provides four-year
undergraduate programs for the Bachelor degree. All departments in the College of Engineering
also offer master and Ph.D. programs. For details, please visit the department website. All the
courses designed in the college are strongly related to the industry.
Most of the departments have their own individual buildings
except for the Department of Industrial Engineering and
Management and the Graduate Institute of Applied Science. The
College has three research centers, Examination Center of Chemical
Materials (ECCM), Environment & Disaster Protection Technology
Research Center (EDPTRC) and Microelectromechanical System &
and Device Laboratory. All centers have strong links with the
industry. For example, most of fond of the centers is from the
industry.
The college has a faculty of Applied Science and Engineering 34
professors, 47 associate professors, 26 assistant professors and 15
instructors. Currently, there are about 3500 registered students,
including 2600 undergraduate students, 850 master students and 50
Ph.D. students

Goals of Future Development

Balanced development in teaching, research, and providing community services is the goal of
the College of Engineering:
1. The goals for teaching is to train the students not only with the necessary knowledge and
skills to be a good quality engineering professional but also have global views and visions.

2
2. The goals for research are to meet the demand of industrial development and to provide
academic service helping the industries to improve in technical levels.
3. The goals for providing community services are to offer continue education opportunities to
our community. It is our responsibilities as a member of the community to help and raise the
quality of life to our neighbors and friends.

Information about Taiwan and Kaohsiung

Information about Taiwan

Area: 36,000 square kilometers

Population: 23 million
Capital: Taipei City
Language: Mandarin/Taiwanese/Hakka/Indigenous Languages
Religion: Buddhism/Taoism/Christianity/Islam

Information about Kaohsiung

The city is located in the south of Taiwan between

120°14’30’’–120°23'30” east longitude and 22°30’30’’–22°45’30”
north latitude. It is the second largest metropolis (with 1.5 million
inhabitants) in Taiwan. The city is often known as Taiwan’s
“Harbor Capital” because of its close connection and heavy reliance
on the ocean and maritime transportation. Although the ranking has
declined steadily over the last few years, Kaohsiung is still the
world’s sixth largest cargo-container seaport. The city has high
concentrations of heavy industry, including steel production,
shipbuilding, and other exports that have led to Kaohsiung’s
relatively high levels of air pollution (though the situation has
improved substantially in recent years). Unlike Taipei, Kaohsiung is
a planned city with wide streets and slightly less traffic congestion
than the capital. The city government holds the idea of a “joyful
Kaohsiung” as the core concept for administration. In recent years
Kaohsiung has been transformed from a primarily industrial city
into a modern Asian metropolis, with the future intention of
continuing to develop the natural aspects of the city, especially the
rivers. S.H.E. (safe, healthy, ecological) is the concept behind the
development plans for the future of the city.

Information of Department/Institute

1. Information about the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering

A hearty welcome to the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering!

The chemical industry plays an important role in Taiwan’s economic development. Our
department is characterized by the close connection with chemical and material industries. In
recent years, the performance and productivity of our faculties have been attracted great attention,
especially in nanomaterials, conductive polymers, and electrochemistry. If you are interested in
seeing the Department or require further information I would be delighted to hear from you, by
phone, fax or e-mail.

1-1 Brief Introduction of the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering

The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering was established in 1963 as the
Department of Chemical Engineering. Along with the development of modern technologies, the
field of chemical engineering has become increasingly broader than ever before. The
department was renamed to Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering in 2005. The
Department offered the Bachelor of Science degree, and, post-graduate study leading to Master
and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees were initiated in 2001 and 2007, respectively. Current
enrollments in the Department are about 480 undergraduate students, 180 students in Master
program and 3 persons in PhD Program. Over 3000 chemical engineers were graduated from the
Department since the inception. Most of the graduates have successful careers, either domestically
or overseas in industry, research institutes and academia. Recently, in order to show their gratitude
to the Department, the alumni have established an educational endowment foundation to facilitate
teaching and research related activities of the Department.
The faculty members are very active in research. Their activities cover many fields of
traditional chemical engineering and those related to technologies in polymers, ceramics,
electronic materials, nanomaterials, pollution control, fine chemicals, biochemical engineering
and biomaterials. Currently, the department has 26 full-time faculty members, including 7
professors, 7 associate professors and 10 assistant professors and 2 lectures.
The Department offer graduate study in chemical and materials engineering leading to

11
Master's and Doctoral degrees for international students. The tuition for Doctoral degree is free.
We sincerely welcome overseas visiting professors and are looking forward to establishing a
long-term collaborative relation with overseas academicians.

Dynamic Light DLS Provides a quick and simple
Scattering (DLS) method for submicron particle sizing.

Differential The DSC offers a measurement

scanning technique of thermal analysis to
calorimetry (DSC) perform fusion, glass transition,
thermal history, crystallization, Curie
point, oxidation stability and thermal
change. DSC can also be used to
cover such needs as specific heat
capacity and purity measurements
Atomic Force The AFM does not require a
Microscopy (AFM) conducting sample. It is useful for
imaging soft samples.

TGA/DTA TGA/DTA is used for reaction
