Scope of present workAs mentioned earlier present studied is an extension of studies by Jagyassi (2000)

bakr (2002) Dammani (2002) and Shande (2003).In the present study effect of
TMD in the form of soft at building top will be studied .TMD will be considered to
have higher damping then main structure .Analysis will be done using direct
integration approach .The building zed are some as those considered by Bakre
(2002) i.e. four building of G+5 with square ,rectangular ,L shape and C-shape
plans are considered .Buildings have parking floors at the ground levels .Analyze
is done for finite element model of building and Finite element software NISA
(Numerically Integrated elements for system analysis) is used.
Analysis of building with TDMEffectiveness of TMD for controlling seismic response of building is well studied
(bllaverde)(1985,1993,1999) Soong and Dargosh(1994) and Sadek(1997)).So for
TMD used for practice at following building john hancock tower,Boston ,Citicorp
center,Manhattan.Canadian ?national Tower,Toronto,Canada Chiba Port Tower
HuisTen Boush Tower Nagasaki Japan and crystal tower Osaka Japan .TMD
installed at building are in different forms are of different tuning and their level of
sophistication varies.
Recognizing the fact that in developing countries like India, controlled device like
TMD shall be in simple form.Jaiswal and Barke (2002) has proposed a soft storey
at building top. Subsequently, dammani (2002) and Shende (2003) have studied
performance of such a TMD by using response spectrum and time history analysis.
In all these studies damping of TMD was taken to be same As that of main
building. However it is well known that for TMD to be more effective, its damping
shall be higher than that of main structure. Damping of TMD can be enhanced by
pitting additional dampers in the diagonal ties between the columns of soft storey.
In this studied ,building with TMD of same damping as that of the
main building are analyzed using direct integration approach.Responce of four
types of buildings ,which were considered by Barke (2002) is obtained under 10
past recorded earthquakes.

Building AnalyzedFour buildings ,each having five storey(i.e.G+5) and different plan shape i.e.
square,rectangular,L-shape and C-shape are consider. It should be noted that L and
C shape building s are torsionally coupled and developing a TMD for such a
building is more involved ( Janguid and Datta 1997) These building have parking
floor at the ground level with no infill walls .Height of all the floors including
ground floors is taken as 3m,with plinth level at 1.5m height from footing level.
Modeling of buildingThis buildings Are modeled using finite element software NISA (EMRC i.e.
Numerically integrated element for system analysis).Beams and column are
modeled using two nodded beam elements with 6 DOF at each node in case of wall
stiffness is provided using double diagonal strut elements.Youngs modulus of
elasticity for strut element is taken as 3500000 mpa and area of diagonal strut is
calculated from the following equation--Ad=(a2t)/4b(1+)cos3
Wherea= panel dimension in meters in x-direction
b= panel dimension in meters in y-direction
t= wall thickness in meters
= poisons ratio of concrete
= Angle of Inclination of strut element with the horizontal

In case of slab stiffness is provided rigid link element . One fourth mass of both
wall and slabs for each panel is added together and lumbed at four corner nodes of
respective frames
To study the effect of TMD two types of building models are consider. First model
(model-1) is the building without TMD and second model ( model-2) is the

building with TMD. Schematic representation of building with out and with
TMD .Walls is not considered below plinth level.
Free vibration analysisIn order to tune the natural frequency of TMD with that of building it is required to
know natural frequency and natural mode shape of building and TMD. Natural
frequencies of building are also needed to calculate the proportional damping
coefficient ( C1 & C2 ) for direct integration method.Hence free vibrational analysis
of all the buildings is carried out.In NISA, Lancoz m,method is used to extract
natural frequency and natural mode of building models.
Suggetion for future workPresent study can be extended in following ways1- Experimental investigation are needed to ascertain the numerical results
presented in this dissertation.
2- Response of soft stoery coloumn should be examined carefully and nonlinerity in TMD should be included
3- TMD with friction damping should be introduced.
4- For high-rise building ,greater then storey ,effect of TMD should be studied.
