Scopeandimportanceofbotany
Aswithotherlifeformsinbiology,plantlifecanbestudiedfromdifferentperspectives,from
themolecular,geneticandbiochemicallevelthroughorganelles,cells,tissues,organs,
individuals,plantpopulations,andcommunitiesofplants.Ateachoftheselevelsabotanist
mightbeconcernedwiththeclassification(taxonomy),structure(anatomyandmorphology),
orfunction(physiology)ofplantlife.
Historically,botanycoversallorganismsthatwerenotconsideredtobeanimals.Someof
theseplantlikeorganismsincludefungi(studiedinmycology),bacteriaandviruses
(studiedinmicrobiology),andalgae(studiedinphycology).Mostalgae,fungi,andmicrobes
arenolongerconsideredtobeintheplantkingdom.However,attentionisstillgiventothem
bybotanists,andbacteria,fungi,andalgaeareusuallycoveredinintroductorybotany
courses.
