Community House
Restoration Campaign
in need of support
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
In 1923, a challenge was sent to
the people of Moorestown that if
they raised enough money to operate a community center for the
town, an anonymous donor, later
revealed to be Eldridge Johnson,
would donate $250,000 to build the
center. The residents came together and raised just more than
$106,000 to operate the center, now
known as the Moorestown Community House.
Since its conception, the Community House has continued to
serve the original purpose it was
built upon, as its mission to serve
the community has not changed.
The original operating budget,
which has since been called the
permanent maintenance fund,
grew until recently when, due to
the changing trends in society,
and the recession in 2007, it dwindled. The 1920s building is now
also in need of a restoration.

Children and parents enjoyed weather-themed activities at the Moorestown Malls Just Mom & Me Play Date on Thursday, April 9.
Here, children dance to music until it stopped where they jumped on their mats like they were splashing in puddles. Just Mom & Me
Play Date, presentations and crafts are provided by the Garden State Discovery Museum, and are held every second Thursday of the

Moorestown High Schools Interact Club is hosting the third
annual Acappella for Autism
show on April 25 from 7 p.m. to 10
p.m. at Moorestown High School.
This is an interscholastic singing
competition created to benefit the
nonprofit organization Autism
New Jersey. Seven high school a
cappella groups from the area
will compete for several awards
in this exciting musical night.
The show serves three purposes. It provides a way for local high
school a cappella clubs to perform, raise money for Autism
New Jersey and raise awareness
of autism for Autism Awareness
Month, said Jessica Fan, MHS

junior and Acappella for Autism

committee member.
Three years ago, Acappella for
Autism was started after the Interact Club did a talent show for
many years and wanted to do
something new. It wanted to get
more people and high schools
from the area involved for a good
cause.
We decided to try something
new and involve more high
schools within the area. So basically, high school a cappella
groups come from around the
area, and they compete against
each other. It is a competition as
well as a performance, Fan said.

By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
In 1915, there was genocide in
Armenia rooted in the fall of the
Ottoman Empire. It was a terrible
period in history filled with persecution against Armenians.
Rapes and beatings were common, and those who were not initially murdered were sent to the
surrounding mountains and
deserts without food, drink or
shelter.
The Armenian Genocide of
1915 took the lives of about 1.5

million individuals. Many are not

aware of this terrible genocide
that happened almost 100 years
ago.
To educate individuals as well
as to commemorate this tragedy,
local Moorestown author Irene
Vosbikian has relaunched her
book, written 25 years ago, called
Bedros, a documentation of her
father-in-laws personal account
of his escape from the genocide.
It was important to relaunch
this novel to bring this story of
the Armenian Genocide to the
non-Armenian community. Ar-

menians are
aware of this
horrendous
situation, but
it was my concern to bring
this story to
the
non-Armenian public, Vosbikian
said.
VOSBIKIAN
A longtime
Moorestown
resident with four children and 11
grandchildren all in Moorestown,
Vosbikian was a freelance writer
for local papers, but didnt write
for money. She wrote to keep her
fathers spirit and passion for
writing alive. He passed away in
WWII before she was born.
However, when Vosbikian
heard her father-in-laws story of
his escape from the Armenian
Genocide, she knew she needed to
do something with his story and
the information he had given her.
That is how Bedros came to be.
I had gotten married to my
husband and went to visit my father-in-law. Many times during
the week, after dinner, we would
sit by the fire and he would talk to
me about his life in Armenia,
which was Turkey at the time,
and how he escaped. After listening to these wonderful stories, I
decided to put those stories into a
novel, Vosbikian said.
Bedros has two stories within its 318 pages. One is the story of
Vosbikians father-in-law, Bedros,
which is Peter in English, and his
survival and escape before the
genocide and his life in Philadelphia afterward. The other part of
the story is from those involved in
the genocide themselves. She did
this part through letters, which
are all accurate and documented
stories. Bedros is brimming
with hope, bravery and perseverance.
My favorite part of the novel
is Bedros escape from Turkey. It
is a fascinating story where he
travels from Turkey to Marseille,

Christies tax cap is working

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

But now its time to move to the next phase reducing property taxes
Dan McDonough Jr.

ive years ago, back in 2010, Gov.

Christie won a political battle,
enacting a 2 percent cap on municipal tax levies. The law limited
property-taxing budget increases to a
maximum of 2 percent with some exceptions down from 4 percent, lest
they be subject to public vote.
While some argued at the time
whether the cap would work, or
whether it was another political ploy,
the data says it has had a positive effect.
Since the cap was enacted, property
taxes rose 2.4 percent on average in
2011, 1.6 percent in 2012, 1.3 percent in
2013 and 2.2 percent in 2014. From 2004
to 2006, property taxes increased at
least 7 percent each year.
Thats data we can stand behind, but
now, five years after the caps enaction,
more needs to be done. Its not simply
good enough that property tax increases have leveled off; we need to find a

working? Or is it all just political smokeand-mirrors? Let your voice be heard

way to reduce the property tax burden

on our residents.
While the increase last year was
only 2.2 percent, New Jerseys average
property tax bill rose to the highest its
ever been to $8,161 on average, according to Department of Community
Affairs data. The average property taxpayer paid an additional $173 in property taxes last year, up from an average
total of $7,988 in 2013.
Heres some more ugly data...
Only 0.2 percent of homeowners in
the U.S. paid more than $8,000 last year
in property taxes which is lower
than our state average.
New Jersey collects $3,000 per capi-

ta in property taxes. Seventy-nine percent of American homeowners paid

less than $1,750 last year, and only 3
percent paid more than $4,000.
Christies property-tax cap was
never going to fix the problem of New
Jerseys high property taxes; it wasnt
designed to do so. It has helped keep
local taxing entities in check, but thats
only a start.
Step 2 of property tax reform should
be initiatives to lower property taxes.
Some of these are in place, such as incentives to bring new business to the
states barren wastelands such as
Trenton and Camden.
But that is not enough. We need to
bring more business and more jobs to
this state, more ratables for our towns
and school districts to offset the taxes
these entities need to operate. Taxes
arent going up too much, and thats
good, but now they need to start going
down.

letter to the editor

Resident frustrated with North
Church Street conditions
I wrote this note out of frustration with
the road conditions on and near the 600
block of North Church Street. It is truly a
concern with how much our house shakes
and vibrates along with the window rat-

tling, uneven road surfaces and speeding.

Leslie Belford
Shake, Rattle, Speed and Holes
Rattle, rattle, I hear you say.
Whats that? Its Church Street ground giving way.
Holes and gullies all around,
Heavyweight trucks speeding down.
Just flying though, I hear them say,

With kids around in dangers way.

Windows cracking, furniture shaking,
Feels like theres a quake awakening.
Wholl address the problem at hand?
Someone must, someone can!
County or township where do I go?
Which extension? How the heck do I know?
No! Call this bureau. No! Call that man.
Someone help surely someone can!

JEAN AND TOM STEUERNAGEL

Lights, camera, proposal

Tom Steuernagel goes Hollywood when asking
for future wife Jeans hand in marriage
By JEAN STEUERNAGEL
Special to The Sun
I met my husband while doing
a photo shoot for Cuisine magazine in West Hollywood. Tom was
a video editor for MTV. One weekend, I had to go out of town,
which allowed Tom to put his
Casablanca proposal into action.
He rented an upright piano,
then borrowed a camera and
lights from his studio. In Los Angeles, they rent out lookalike
celebrities for events, so Tom
rented Humphrey Bogart, complete with white suit and Lucky
Strikes. A makeup woman from
Universal made Tom to look like
Sam the piano player.
One smoggy Sunday afternoon,
Tom sat at the piano while Bogie
leaned against it. Lights, camera,

action, take one. The fake Bogie

recited his famous line, Play it
again, Sam. Then Tom looked
squarely into the camera and
said, Jean Marie, will you marry
me forever? He edited his modified scene into the original movie.
The next night he invited me
over for dinner. When I arrived,
he poured some champagne, and
then hit the play button on the
VCR. Casablanca was fast-forwarded to just before the crucial
scene. As I sipped my drink, I
watched the TV in utter disbelief.
Seconds after his proposal, I noticed a diamond ring in the bottom of my champagne glass. Of
course I said yes.

Community House is asking the

people of Moorestown to take another challenge. In its Restoration
Campaign, the Moorestown Community House is asking individuals, clubs and businesses to help
keep the Community House as a
community center for generations to come. To do this, the campaign is asking for $2 million.
Those who wish to help can do so
in one of three ways: they can
make a contribution or a pledge
of any monetary size as a business or individual; they can take
the Eldridge Johnson 10-in-5 challenge; or they can have an event
at the Community House.
I believe the Community
House is a community treasure.
We, the Moorestown residents,
are the current stewards of the
Community House, and we have a
responsibility to restore it so our

Now, we need to raise funds to

restore building. Our operating
revenue will be able to sustain us
in the future, we just need the
townspeople and the business
leaders to come together to donate that money in the same way
Eldridge Johnson did and the
townspeople did in the 1920s. By
donating money and restoring
the Community House, hopefully
well be able to help more nonprofits and more people, said
Brad Kenney, executive director
at the Moorestown Community
House.
What many people dont know
about the Community House is it
is a private, non-profit. That
means no township, state or federal funding goes into the Community House. It is completely
funded by the usage of the venue,
which makes up about 80 percent
of its income, and from donations, which make up 20 percent.
Moorestown is extremely
unique in that no other town in
New Jersey has a place like the
Community House, a private,
nonprofit, Kenney said.
Due to the change in trends
and society, as well as other venue
options being available, the Community House has seen a decline
in revenue. To help offset that, the
Community House renovated the

gymnasium into a ballroom to
create an entirely new revenue
stream. The ballroom can be used
for weddings, birthday parties,
wine tastings, galas, meetings
and more. It has seen much success since, and for 2013, the Community House was named Best of
Weddings by The Knot.
At the same time as it gave us
an opportunity for more revenue,
it also gave us an opportunity to
serve nonprofits even more,
which is our mission. So that is a
huge positive thing, Kenney
said.
The ballroom change has increased revenue to help create a
more balanced budget. However,
there is still much to be done. The
Community House needs work on
its roof, heating and air-conditioning, parking lot and renovation of the rooms for this genera-

tion, just to name a few.

The Restoration Campaign is
asking for $2 million and is already 33 percent there. It is asking $1 million for the restorations,
$675,000 to satisfy the mortgage
created from the ballroom and
$325,000 to add to the existing permanent maintenance fund, which
will restore this fund to its original level with inflation adjusted.
The Moorestown Community
House has just started its outreach to businesses with the Business Leader Breakfast/Lunch.
Businesses are invited to come to
the lunch to learn more about the
Restoration Campaign as well as
the Community Houses Eldridge
Johnson 10-in-5 Challenge. This
challenge is asking businesses, or
individuals, to pledge $10,000 to be
paid over five years. The campaign is looking for 100 pledges,
which is only 5 percent of the
1,800 businesses in Moorestown
alone. The next one is Tuesday,
April 28.
However, not just businesses,

anybody can help the Community

House in its Restoration Campaign. If they cant do the 10-in-5
Challenge, they are encouraged to
make a contribution of any size
as well as something people
might not often think about
hosting an event at the Community House. Hosting an event helps
raise funds for the Community
House as well.
The hope is to finish the last
push of this campaign by mid2016, but Kenney said he would
love to be done by the end of 2015.
For more information on the
Restoration Campaign, visit
www.ourcommunityhouse.com.
Through the website, people can
also donate. To donate in person,
take a tour of the Community
House or speak to Kenney. His

sale during intermission, and
those proceeds will also benefit
Autism New Jersey.
It is for a good cause, and it is
really interesting to see how all
the groups put together their
music. It is like an introduction to
the a cappella world and the
music world in general. Most people are moved by music, and I
hope they feel moved to come.
The groups are really good, Mirchandani said.
This is one of Interact Clubs
major events for the year. Last
year, the club was able to donate
$5,600, and it hopes to do the same
or better this year. Tickets are $10
and can be bought online at
www.showtix4u.com or at the
door. Tickets sold out last year,
and the Acappella for Autism

committee is hopeful to do so
again, so be sure to get tickets in
advance. Ordering early will
allow for good seating as well, as
tickets are reserved.
We keep increasing, and we
hope to keep cutting down on
costs and getting more donations
for Autism New Jersey. If we sell
out again this year, we might look
for another, bigger venue next
year, Fan said.
Before the performance, Acappella for Autism is also holding a
fundraiser on Friday, April 17 at
Jersey Mikes Subs, when 20 percent of the proceeds made from 5
p.m. to 8 p.m. on that Friday will
go toward Acappella for Autism.
We had the fundraiser there
last year. Their subs are really
good, Mirchandani said.
