We've Come This Far By Faith

John 20:24-29 (niV)

Refrain:

Now Thomas (also known as

Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not
with the disciples when Jesus came.
25
So the other disciples told him, We
have seen the Lord!

Refrain:
Verse 1:

Dont be discouraged when troubles in

Your life, Hell bear your burdens and move
All misery and strive. Thats why weve
Come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord;
Trusting in His holy word, Hes never failed
Me yet. Oh cant turn around, weve come
this far by faith.

Refrain:
Verse 2

Just the other day I heard someone say

He didnt believe in Gods word; But I can
Truly say that God has made a way, and
Hes never failed me yet. Thats why weve
Come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord;
Trusting in His holy word, Hes never failed
Me yet. Oh cant turn around, weve come
this far by faith.

24

But he said to them, Unless I see

the nail marks in his hands and put
my finger where the nails were, and
put my hand into his side, I will not
believe.
A week later his disciples were in
the house again, and Thomas was
with them. Though the doors were
locked, Jesus came and stood among
them and said, Peace be with you!
27
Then he said to Thomas, Put your
finger here; see my hands. Reach out
your hand and put it into my side. Stop
doubting and believe.
26

Thomas said to him, My Lord and

my God!
28

Then Jesus told him, Because you

have seen me, you have believed;
blessed are those who have not seen
and yet have believed.

Dr. Stephen G. Ray, Jr., the Neal F. and Ila A. Fisher Professor of Systematic Theology at Garrett
Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, IL, worshipped at Trinity UCC on Easter Sunday. He wrote
this wonderful letter, sharing his thoughts about his worship experience here at Trinity UCC,
the greatest church this side of the River Jordan!
I Saw Him Today
Today in worship, something happened. It was a moment like none I've had before. Today, I
saw Him. These words I know sound odd coming from the lips of one who has been in ministry
for thirty years, teaching theology for sixteen, and pastored for thirteen or fourteen years,
depending on how I count. They sound odd for me to hear in my own voice. For I have known
Him most of my life. I know His voice, and can feel His presence with me in the highways and
byways of life, at table and at bedside. But, today. Today.
In my own work as a theologian I have studied and written about symbol and action, and in my
hermeneutics classes been part of discussions about liturgy as symbolic action understood to be
making present the divine in worship in ways that could be experienced as "real" by worshippers.
Taking Barbara A. Holmes language, symbolic language and action open a portal through which
we might be drawn into the very life of God. While I have certainly had many experiences in
worship in which the Spirit has done mighty work, it was always an experience of my heart, my
mind and my spirit. But, today. Today.
The worship arts ministry at Trinity UCC engaged in a wonderful re-creation of the moment the
women came to the tomb and were met by the Angel. Through their movement in dance, their
passion and strength we were brought to that moment of fear and wonder. The mass choir
was singing a version of "He Is Alive." Through their ministry an unexpected portal was opened.
Through the song and the dance I was caught up in the divine drama of Easter. And then from
the corner of my eye I caught sight of something fluttering. The purple flags were waving in
what I took to be another movement in the liturgical dance. But, then I saw His outstretched
hands and gazed upon His face. My eyes filled with tears and my heart was so full it felt about to
explode. The strength gone from my legs, I sat and wept for a bit, and then joined the church in
singing praises. Today, I experienced liturgy in worship as I rarely have. Today, through it, I saw
Him. I will carry that moment and give thanks for it throughout all my days.

Make or Break Proposition

Pardon our liberties with the English language but in African American communities, vacant properties like
the decade-old, defunct Michaels Muffler & Brakes at the corner of 95th and LaSalle are nowhere to be
found on the priority lists of the so-called powers that be.
In Washington Heights, both abandoned buildings and vacant lots are far too common and with them come
serious negative effects to our health and safety. The collection of debris, risk of fire and the attraction to
crime contributes greatly to perception, the lack of neighborhood stability and the economic welfare of a
community.
Last summer, the Endeleo Institute was among 25 applicants selected for a highly competitive Local
Technical Assistance Grant (LTA) from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP). This regional
planning agency, funded by Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will assist Endeleo to develop a
Planning Priorities Report for the 95th Street Corridor and surrounding neighborhoods. The report will
prioritize the main issues plaguing Washington Heights and the 95th Street corridor, formulating a plan of
action to improve economic vitality, quality of life for residents, and community collaboration.
The operative word is community. For the next nine months, Endeleo will engage residents, business and
community leaders, institutions and other stakeholders for interviews, surveys, focus groups and town hall
meetings, all to ensure your voices are heard and reflected in the report. We really need your input.

For more information about how to get involved, please contact our office at
