of Kabul. Soviet armed forces entered Afghanistan in December 1979 to

Scammers Will be Out in Force in 2010
One of my neighbors recently received a phone call from a well-
known charity organization asking for donations. At least she thought it
was the same organization calling. It wasn’t. It was a scam, with the
thieves using well-known charity names to bilk people out of money.
Rule of thumb: If someone is pressuring you to make a purchase or
donation by phone, hang up. It’s your phone and you can take charge of
whom you’re willing to talk to. Unless you make the call, you can’t be
sure who’s at the other end.
The Internet continues to be a nightmare of potential scams if you
accidentally put in too much information or if you make a purchase
online.
Rule of thumb: Have two e-mail addresses. Use one for family and
friends. Use a second one for everything else and where an e-mail
address is required.
Not all scams arrive by telephone or mail. Sometimes they come
right to your door. The coming 2010 Census is going to be a problem in
some respects in that the scammers will take that opportunity to knock
on your door and ask for information. Or, they could send fraudulent e-
mail that appears to be from the U.S. Census Bureau. Look at the Census
site (www.census.gov) and read what you can expect if someone from
the Census comes to your door or sends e-mail.
Rule of thumb: The Census Bureau won’t send you anyone to your
door asking for your Social Security number, credit-card information,
debit-card PIN codes or personal information. If you receive e-mail that
looks like it might be from the Census Bureau, don’t take any chances.
Delete it, without clicking on any links in the e-mail. If you have
questions about Census e-mail you receive or someone who has come to
your door, call the Census Bureau at 1-800-392-6975 or 1-800-523-

WORKS ON DISPLAY AT THE HINKLE MEMORIAL
LIBRARY GALLERY AT ALFRED STATE COLLEGE
Alfred, NY, January 2010- Stick dolls, dove tiles, and tin
clocks are among the works on display at the Hinkle Memorial
Library gallery at Alfred State College from now until the end
of February. The exhibit features the creations of three
members of the Allegany Artisans: Betsy and Charles Orlando
of Belmont and Elaine Hardman of Wellsville.
Betsy uses bits of fabrics, adds whimsy and notions, and
creates art dolls. Her most ephemeral and whimsical are the
stick dolls that prance across one
wall of the gallery. Betsy once
attended a workshop where
participants were given a table
full of stuff and directed to give it
personality. That’s when she made
her first stick doll. She has gone
on to make many such dolls and
even offers workshops in stick
dolls, suggesting that the activity
is a “great birthday party activity
for kids or adults.”

several area artisans who offer
small workshops for families or
groups of friends. Make a doll, a
bracelet, centerpieces, tote bags,
or pottery with Betsy or one of the
other artisans who enjoy making
things.
Other dolls in the show are more complex. Many of Betsy’s
dolls were made to meet challenges. Pamela Armas, who sells
fabric and trims from India, each year sponsors a doll
challenge. Doll makers pay a fee and are given the details of
the challenge and some fabrics and trims. They may add to the
materials but must create a doll to answer the theme. Betsy
made “Shell Collector” for the challenge named “Treasures of
the Sea.” Betsy said that generally close to 100 dolls are sent
to the Houston Quilt Show to meet Armas’ yearly challenge.
Another doll in the exhibit is Nils the Nisse. Nisse are
Scandinavian elves and Nils was created as a class sample for
a workshop Betsy taught. Betsy not only makes dolls, but also
is an accomplished knitter though she says that her husband
Charley is the true knitting pro.
Charley’s art ranges from knitting to felting to
blacksmithing to the construction of musical instruments. He
not only makes musical instruments but has learned to play
all that he’s made. Since that didn’t keep him busy enough,
after Charley met Bobby Hansson, the guru of tin can art, he
was inspired to take that up too. Now Charley teaches tin can
art at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC,
when he’s not teaching blacksmithing or knitting.
Betsy teaches at the Folk School too. Her classes include
book arts, dolls, figurative sculpture, and mixed media.
The ceramic work in the show was created by potter Elaine
Hardman. Elaine dabbles in fibers, plays flute and piccolo, and
occasionally writes for local papers, but for real fun she works
with clay. In the show are several functional pieces. Elaine
feels that the best part of making pottery is hearing how her
work becomes important to people either because they use it
every day or for special occasions. She feels honored that some
of her artwork is counted among people’s small treasures.
In addition to some bowls and jars there is a whimsical cow
bowl. Elaine makes a number of different animals as bowls,
banks, and cookie jars. Also included are a tile and mirror
entitled “Peace in Your Life” and an outdoor tile called “Happy
Chicken.”

input costs and meet the demand for locally-grown grass fed

grazing, hear what an experienced meat processor has to say
about maximizing yield from a grass-fed carcass and see if a

The conference agenda features knowledgeable and
experienced producers from right here in Pennsylvania. Our
keynote speaker, John Hopkins, is co-owner and operator of the
very successful Forks Farm and Forks Farm Market in
Columbia County. Breakout sessions during the remainder of
the conference are designed to address a wide variety of
grazing-related topics.

Veterans
(NAPSA)-As Americans find
new ways to salute the efforts of
brave U.S. servicemen and -
women, one group has continued
to help thousands of blinded
veterans realize brighter futures.
The organization was started 65
years ago by a small band of
recently blinded U.S. soldiers
meeting in an army convalescent
facility. Anxious to help one
another lead happy and productive
lives, they soon became guided by
the following statement:
"We cannot expect much help or
cooperation in our fight unless we
prove ourselves worthy of it. If we
do not wish to be considered
helpless, we must begin to
produce."
Today, just as when it began in
1945, the Blinded Veterans
Association (BVA) serves as a
bright beacon of light for blinded
veterans and their families. The
organization works actively to
locate veterans who need services
and to help them make
contributions to society that are as
worthy and meaningful as they
would have been, had they retained
their sight.
The group also guides veterans
through the rehabilitation process,
advocates for them and their
families before Congress and the
Department of Veterans Affairs
(VA), and helps provide access to
new technologies and research that
might help with vision loss.
Just as important, however, BVA

nearly 7,000 veterans lose their site
each year due to age-related
macular degeneration, retinitis
pigmentosa and glaucoma.

free, and the group is funded by
donations from generous

Satisfying Foods Can Mean Diet
Success
(NAPSA)-There's no magic
formula to losing weight-consume
too many calories and the body
will store them as fat. That said,
there are ways by which you can
make better food choices to help
control your appetite and
metabolize food more efficiently.
For example, new research
indicates that making meat and
poultry a part of your diet can help
control appetite and enhance
weight loss. These high-protein,
nutrient-dense foods are satisfying,
which translates into less snacking
between meals.
In other research, eating enough
protein, along with adequate
physical activity, may also help
you lose fat, not muscle, as you
manage weight.
A 2009 study conducted by the
University of Illinois' Department
of Food Science and Human
Nutrition and Penn State
University's Department of
Nutritional Sciences reinforced the
fact that diets with increased
protein and reduced carbohydrates
are effective for weight loss.
Thirty-one percent of those on the
high-protein diet lost a total of 10
percent or more of their body
weight.
A Purdue University study
confirmed these findings and found
that a reduced-calorie diet with a
higher amount of protein helped
overweight women retain more
lean body mass while losing
weight compared to women who
consumed the same amount of
calories but ate less protein.
These findings don't surprise
Betsy Booren, Ph.D., director of
scientific affairs at the American
Meat Institute Foundation. "Lean
meats and other sources of protein
provide a significant amount of
vitamins, minerals and other
nutrients with relatively few
calories."
So what are some lean meat
items to add to your grocery list to
help subtract from your waistline?
• In the case of beef, the leanest
cuts are those of "select" or
"choice" grade, with the words
"round" or "loin" in their names,
such as eye round and top sirloin.
