The innovative in line Quenching and Self-Tempering (QST) process at the
ArcelorMittal heavy sections rolling mill of Differdange in Luxembourg is in
industrial operation since 20 years.
The possibility of combining high strength up to 450 MPa (65 ksi) with
outstanding welding properties, besides a high ductility, good through-thickness
properties also at low temperatures, outstanding weldability (in most cases
without preheating) made heavy jumbos sections in QST steels, brand name
HISTAR, an immediate success.
With HISTAR, ArcelorMittal satisfies the needs of the designers for light and
economical structures which fulfill at the same time the criteria of safety and
sustainability.
HISTAR, steels are delivered in the thermo-mechanically rolled condition in
accordance with the European Technical Approval ETA-10/0156. They comply
with the requirements of the European standards EN 10025 4:2004 for weldable
fine grain structural steels as well as the American standard ASTM A913.
Many applications such as members of long-span space frames, heavily
loaded steel columns and composite columns of high-rise buildings have been
successfully built these last two decades.
Besides these conventional structures, the hot rolled beams in QST steel
grades became an integral part of special applications such as deep foundations,
the American Strong Column - Weak Beam concept for high-rise structures in
seismic areas as well as super mega composite columns with multiple Jumbos
untied between the floors.
In order to allow Structural Designers to give birth to the Architects dreams,
the strength steel grades have been increased. Since 2011, ASTM A913/ Grade
485 MPa (70 ksi) is now available, breaking the world record of 65 ksi yield
strength for hot rolled sections.

Moreover, to allow Architects to reach even greater heights, the range of rolled
shape sizes has also been extended. Since 2011, Super Jumbo shapes (HD400)
(W14"x16") are available up to 1299 kg/m (873 lbs/ft) and HL 920 (W36"x16.5")
up to 1377 kg/m (925 lbs/ft) increasing the world record of thickness (140mm)
and weight.

Thereby, more than 200 shape sizes are available in grade 485 MPa (70ksi).
For typical gravity columns, the heaviest Super Jumbo in grade 485 MPa (70
ksi) can carry 40% more loads than the previously heaviest Jumbos in Grade 345
MPa (50 ksi). This means also 40% weight savings respectively carbon foot print
reduction.
With new modern steels and sections sustainable building materials are
available for Super Tall Buildings.
