Ottawa is not the only city with a Nowruz Bazaar. Many cities in North America have them before the New Year. Ayoubzadeh says i's not a tradition, but it has become a custom Akram Shekarchi fas one of the event’s vendors, She has been com- ing down from Los Angeles to se Nowiruz items like embellished garlic, vinegar, and sabzeh, the traditional green sprouts, as well as help her brother with the catering for several years, She said business that day had been good, and people were very friendly, “We are Iranians, Whereve! ‘we have to support each other,” she said, about the importance of the bazaar. Morvarid Basiriis a high school student who had volunteered at the event for the last two years, and ‘was attending for the first time this year, She said that it was hard to find Persian things around Ottawa, but for this event they all came together, and she liked that aspect. “like the food, because you have the Persian kebab and rice and that's my favourite part..and | like the Haft Seen too,” Basiri said, referencing the traditional Nowruz table. | think these things are good ‘cause ‘they keep the spirit of the Persian community alive,” she added Ayoubzadeh wanted to thank the community for their support and ir understanding that their attend- ance is what encourages the organi: zation of events like the bazaar. He said he was very appreciative of the community and hoped events like the bazaar would help give back. ‘One for all, all for one,” he chuckled. en. = Ly a name you can trust Weddings. Birthdays .Corporate Events. Live MusicNowruz Bazaar brings Persians together By Sima Shakeri The importance of a sense of com- munity was plain to see duringthe Persian Nowruz Bazaar on March 15. Organizers, vendors and attendees all reaffirmed their belief that events like the bezear are important to keep ing the Persian community united, The bazaar, which took place at the Sala San Marco Banquet Hall, has been an annual event for nine years, and takes place a week before the Persian New Year of Nowiruz, which is the first day of spring, Many Per- sians flock to the bazaar to get their Nowruz shopping done, as many of the items required for the celebre- tion are hard to find otherwise, Nowruz items weren't the only products on the table. Food, and pas- tries were also sold, as well as small handmade knick-knacks, clothing and Jewelry. Promoters for things like spa or real estate services were also at tables. The event's organizer, Shahriar Ayoubzadeh, said that organizing it ‘was a breeze after so many years. He said the event has been growing year after year, and has now surpassed just the Persian community, as many others also attend and vend at the event. “What we were hoping, basically, ‘was to make it a community event, for the entire community, not just Iranians, and it seems to be going that way, especially for the past three years. A lot of exhibitors have been not Persians,” He said. He estimates that 60% of attendees are Persian, while 40% are not, while it used to be closer to 90% Persian, and 10% not. “We allow the community to come together in a social environment, a family environment. They mostly do their Nowruz shopping for the New Year and they have a good time,” Ayoubzadeh said. “We created [the bazaar] for the community, We felt the need for something that helps businesses, and helps the community come togeth- er,” he said. “This isan event to allow people to come and do their shop- pingallin one place rather than shop around the city.” ‘wew.simorahmagazine.com He also added that word-of-mouth seems to be the event's best oro- moter. He explained that he hasn't been doing anything different year- after-year in terms of promotion but the event has grown on its own to bring people together from different cultures. ‘Ayoubzadeh was expecting a good turnout to the event based on feedback he had received from the ‘community, as well as the weekend’s ‘good weather, and he was not disap- pointed. He said the crowds were even busier than he expected, but that things were running smoothly, and everyone was cooperating, ‘The bazaar itself was bustling with ‘energy, and it was packed with people, and navigating through the throngs to speak to vendors was challenging because of the enthusias- tic crowds. | | Ayoubzadeh said that the event had between 40 and 45 vendors this year, During the event, he estimated that by the time the day ended, 2000 toCosmology and Work My point in all of this? Depending on how we envision ourselves in our cosmologies will depend also how we envision what work is. We are our cosmologies. ‘Studs Terkel (1912-2008) writes in Working: "Work is an essential part of being alive, Your work is your identity, It tells you who you are.” Doesn't it make sense to become familiar with the contours and shapes and ‘messages’ of ‘our cosmologies? Each of us needs an ongoing revolu- tion of our imaginations. We need to do inner work, that. is, we must take time to ‘waste time,’ as some might say, Unless we take time on an ongoing basis for this inner reflection, the more we will be at the mercy of our inner ‘cosmololgical drivers’ that steer our personal, psychologt ‘al, intellectual, moral and spiritual selves and perhaps take us on ‘paths’ we might not agree with or choose if we were more conscious, The next series of articles will focus on the inte- ‘gral aspect of work for us and explore the notion of con- tours and shapes so that we can become more in touch with who we truly are, To come to the end of our human journey and only then to discover that we have never lived our own real lives but instead only lived the illusions and ideologies of others would be a sad indictment and commentary on who we are, One thing is certain: the context for this ‘true self’ discovery is usually silence. The ‘noise’ all around us in our world today does not bode well for such a ‘self’ journey. There are a lot of ‘selfies; | realize, but perhaps we are really seeing the narcissism that surrounds us on a constant basis. There is an un- conscious and cosmological conspiracy against silence in ‘our world today. Without silence and self-reflection, we may easily be seduced, as Merton says, into giving up our current cosmology with its illusions only to create a ‘new! ‘one with different cosmological illusions and contours and shapes that may be a new adventure in chasing windmills or, at worst, catastrophic for ourselves and for others. These daydreams become an integral part of our cosmology or the universe we live in, Try to talk to someone who is a racist! Or 2 fudamentalist! Ora sports fan! Corporate whistleblowers are like prophets: they disturb the ‘balance of power’ in our cosmologies oF, at least, they challenge our uni- verses, that is, the cosmologies by which we live and in which we breathe and say to one another, “This is how life should be lived!” We know how many prophets have died as a result of ‘sticking-their-noses-into-other-peo- ple's-cosmologicak-universe’! There are prophets in fami- lies, in the boardroom, in countries. Mahatma Gandhi is one classic example! The movie “Erin Brockovich” (2000) starring Julia Roberts isa classic story of a courageous woman with a prophetic voice whose cosmology did not include accepting that corporations could simply pollute tthe local water supplies where they set up shop and did business. The persecutions inflicted upon different re- ligions and people for centuries bear witness to how strong one ideology or one image of a cosmology can be when it perceives a threat to itself (think ISIS or the "Natis}. History is replete with example after example of killings, exterminations, genocides, and brutalities of unimaginable ferocity — as we witness today with groups killing others ofa different persuasion or ideology or cos- mology cosmologies colliding with opposing or differ- ent cosmologies. Calling it “more than bad chemistry.” CNN's March 2, 2015 account of the different worldviews between the U.S. President and the Israeli Prime Minis- ter, the headline read that the difference was more than just a clash of personalities! The author of the article writes, “Their relationship, which will be played out in all, its dysfunctional glory during Netanyahu’s visit to Wash- ington this week [March 1], founders on a deep ideolog- cal divide and @ sharply conflicting world view.” David Makovsky, a former advisor on Secretary of State John Kerry's Middle East team says, “Each one is convinced that the other one doesn’t get the other side’s core inter- ests, .. Beyond all the grievances and the slights, that is the fundamental issue.” So you may be asking, “What has all this got to do with rethinking what work means? The one-word answer: “cosmology.” Another word Is “Worldview.” Compatabil- ity, 2s we know, lies at the heart of 2 couple who plans to get married: they believe they share a common vision. ‘Once married the ‘shared vision’ may find itself in a much larger cosmology or worldview of one spouse, a cosmolo- gy that if so diffierent can lead to divorce, murder, separa- tion, physical abuse, etc., etc. Cosmologies are no laughing matter, The cosmological catastrophes that were handled by the Roman Catholic Church with Copernicus’ and Galileo's discoveries are riveting in their decriptions and collisions with church authorities who held firmly to a very different cosmology, Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) and Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) basically told church authorites that, the church's ideas of their physical cosmology were inac- curate. Copernicus held back from publishing his views. because, according to the Polish Biographical Dictionary, he did not want to expose himself “on account of the nov elty and incomprehensibility of his theses.” He proposed a heliocentric solar system, in which the sun, rather than the earth, was the centre of the solar system, Until Coper- nicus, people had built their world,’ so to speak, around an earlier cosmology of the earth being the centre of the universe. With Galileo it wasa different matter. His new scientific cosmology was found to be ‘heretical’ and he was forced to recant his research. He spent the last nine years of his life under house arrest —years that he said were his best writing years! Cosmologies do matter! Many of us when we think of cosmology often have an outer image of it, that is, the physical universe with its stars, galaxies, etc. That's correct, of course, but there is also an “inner cosmology” that each of us has. Contemporary conflicts, wers, pllag- ings, persecutions... all stem basically from these inner cosmologies that individuals, societies and countries have. Merton again reminds us that when we discover our (comological illusions we must be careful not to put up resistance with a different kind of worldview illusion and try to ‘convert’ people around that new onel This would be akin to an ‘illusion & la Don Quixote’ type! If you recall, Geoffrey Chaucer (c.1343-1400} writes that Don Quixote took his steed and began ‘charging at windmills’ His ideol- ‘ogy was all in his head ... not real atall, Sadly that seems to have been the case with the sick and ‘evil cosmology of the co-pilot who deliberately brought down Flight 9525 in, March 2015 resulting in 150 deaths in the Alps. That's why you will read so often from me that we truly need ongoing inner reflection time ~ self-reflection — and a process of discernment, to grow wisdom... something that is desper- ately needed today. ‘wew.simorahmagazine.com340 Laurier (613) 233-9999 | nue West vy. In short, insight demands energy for {a} searching, (b) faithfulness, (c} noodling, (d) reality, and (e] honesty. Thus, when we look at Figure 1, we see the proc- es that will be necessary if we are to meet the challenge of rediscovering what work is supposed to be for us today, | have diagrammed the -C-A process (1, #2, #3) ‘thatiis critical for us but | have also added two impulses that need to accompany us with this process. We need to be faithful searchers but this must also be attuned to allowing creativity to visit us. That is, we must be open to the unexpected, the goodness in life that can surprise us, IFwe can do that we have set the stage for welcoming ‘the beginnings of insight. There is 3 fundamental intui- tion here: that we truly believe that life is gracious, that life is not out to trick us but rather to provide us with what is needed for our true journey, Without acquiesc- ing to life's overall goodness, we are really in a quandry because we will start this process of gaining insight by mistrusting the very foundation and context that sup- ports us in attaining such insight, Such psychological and spiritual posturing can only sabotage our efforts, ‘My World Is Better Than Your World’ So, where do we begin? I'm beginning with the idea of cosmology, especialy the inner cosmology believes as to how the world ticks or makes sense. As hu- ‘man beings each of us shares some ‘pieces’ of a cosmol- gy that is innate to each of us. | am referring specifically, here to ‘a piece’ like the Golden Rule which is @ shared reciprocity ethic embedded in over 20 of the world's re- ligions for millennia. It is integral to any ethical code and states that we should treat one another as we would like others to treat us. My method is to say thet before we can take ac- tion as a result of the courege we need to implement our insight, we must ponder for a moment and ask ourselves, “What kind of cosmology do we live in?” Many of us live in a cosmology or a world that we have really not ‘thought much about. Instead, we have grown up often assuming that the ‘world’ we live in ~our inner universe or inner picture of our world or cosmology ~ is what is. To make such 2 conclusion is not totally correct because it suggests that we haven’t thought through what its ba- sic assumptions are; we have simply ‘bought into them’ culturally as a result of our upbringing, schooling, ‘the way things have always been, ete, t's in this sense that lam claiming that we are adrift in a universe that many of us don’t know. ‘We are in desperate need of a new cosmology anda new understanding, Suffice itis to say that the old cosmology — pre-Industrial Revolution — while it had its drawbacks did have one thingin common for people: life was seen and lived froma wholistic point of view, Life ‘hung together’ somehow. That is, people from 300 + years ago and more saw the earth and the heavens ‘and time and seasons through an integrated lens. Their cosmology was not piecemeal, or just bits-and-pieces. But With the advent of the Industrial Revolution life got bro- ken down into parts that were seen to fit together as one Put parts ofa machine together so that it would work. Hence, the heart wasa ‘pump’ Fix the pump and voilal Problem solved. Cosmologies, Illusions and Ideologies ‘The late Thomas Merton (1915-1968) reminds us that we can easily be under the spell of collective illu- ‘wew.simorahmagazine.comeo REVISIONING WORK: PART Knowing the Difference Between ‘Good Work? and ‘Wrong Work? Or. Michael Rock Urban Hesychast April, 2015 “Know therefore what is work, And also what is wrong work.” — Bhagavad Gita ‘Some of us ‘work’; some of us are ‘out of work’ The prob- lem address in this essay is not so much who works and who does not work. OF course, to the individual working ~ ‘or not working! — does matter. Work is very much em= bedded into the fabric of who we are, It is often the first question we are asked when we meet a person for the first time: “What kind of work do you do?” or “What is Your line of work?” For some to be asked for the ‘kind’ of work they do can very embarassing - depending on their self-concept. For others to be asked about their ‘line’ of ‘work immediately conjures up the different images they have put together ~so they think —to make a good pres- entation of an accounting or impression of themselves. The question of work, in other words, forces most of us to ‘say something about ourselves’ — a major indicator of ‘work's importance in shaping our identity and mastery of life's challenges. Work can be an intolerable burden or @ ‘great joy; no work can be an intolerable humiliation ora personal renewal. In order to make some sense of what we now call ‘work’ want to spend the next series of articles on the topic itself and the rethinking of the idea of work. It's not a simple topic to approach because itis loaded with so much history and mythology or beliefs of what we think ‘work is or should be. Each of us is born into a world with its current mythology or zeigeist or interpretation of what the ‘world’ means or should mean already in place, that a is, in the air we breathe, so to speak. In our busy day-to- day lives we don't often think what is ‘behind’ the think- ing that we believe is our own thinking about life, about the world. lam suggesting that today we need 2 revolution of the imagination to have @ healthier sense of what work is and must be, As the subtitle above from the Bhagavad Gita to this series says, we can have ‘good work’ and we can have ‘wrong work: A true discernment is needed to sort ‘out and know the difference; it also takes courage to keep choosing what is ‘our work’; sometimes it takes years to sort out that fundamental question: “What am I sup- posed to do in life?” In an earlier article | discussed my I-C-A formula: Insight-Courage-Action. We will never lead healthy lives unless we gain the Insight needed, but we also need the Courege necessary to translate that insight into Action. Many perhaps have the insight or awareness of what is needed but stall at being courageous enough toact upon such 2 process. Keep in mind that insight demands that we are serious about searching what we intuitively know we must search for. It also requires that ‘we be faithful to the inner demands needed for the search, that is, that we're not going about it in a willy-nilly fashion but expecting to find an ‘answer’ to our efforts; that we take the time to ponder the question or problem we are currently wrestling with, an effort | call noodling PB Searching CreativicyPU arg ARYA FOOD MARKET =’ SoS Sp scp g> TO SllT 46 g02r0 ‘wew.simorahmagazine.com(ONS DID PUP ees) Coe C ea cpr ee fe ere ete ire Te ed Se ‘aslige Pll 98 3185 gly yanfBeuoyse DI Shubar 15202-6181 Parsia Travel ‘513-230-4228, Cae een = SH at Hee lal of Cand cd = P coat at Jee alata pak eer “cod loge clactal Rado Parvaz VFM 61292-6181 SW ey 5 1 Driving 613-266-2620 eae) Jim's Driving 613-294-4872 Salang 613-820-0007 Yeni Garda 613-233-9999 eps abs i) ee La C Ey 613780-0818 ‘Immigration Canada 613-238-5462 Peper Pe RF ny Cee ead ees ‘Arya Food 613-594-636 Max Auto 613-725-9884 Pepe sweety z re RD eet Arya Food, (613-594-3636 Otto's Ortawa (613-725-3048 Same Clad oerreS 132-2174 Al Mirzakhaliti 613-266-8432 sisaenerst seodtasle ed Shia Shaan 613-569-1155 Baran-Dance last 61265-4602 Sahu Karur sisseu Neguecn-Paiting & 6132242174 sa A ‘Azadeh Andokan 6133029738 Simorgh Magazine s13292-6181 Mayan Fasmzach 613-595-8600 (chirpractor) a Massage Therapy sane Cea Nawin Saba Dez) 613-241-1010 Behuad A Reza 613-291-6167 Noshin Vlad (Desi) 613-807-18% Mr Safi s1x686-3100 ced O r ny = Al Mirzakbalili 613-266-8432 ee _— exsan-6757 ‘Minoo Heri 613-263-8964 Lae?
