What is FTTH

Fiber to the home (FTTH) is the delivery of a communications signal over optical
fiber from the operators switching equipment all the way to a home or business,
thereby replacing existing copper infrastructure such as telephone wires and coaxial
cable. FTTH is a relatively new and fast growing method of providing vastly higher
bandwidth to consumers and businesses, and thereby enabling more robust video,
internet and voice services.

Benefit of FTTH
Compared with other access technology like xDSL, FTTH has below benefits:
High Speed, FTTH access speed can reach 1000Mbps or 10Gbps, while xDSL is less
than 100Mbps;
Long Distance, for example, the common form of gigabit Ethernet (1Gbit/s) runs only
to 300 ft (91 m). However, 1Gbit/s Ethernet over fiber can easily reach tens of miles;
Future-Proof, the fiber data rate of the connection is usually limited by the terminal
equipment rather than the fiber, permitting at least some speed improvements by
equipment upgrades before the fiber itself must be upgraded.

FTTH Technology GPON and P2P

GPON and P2P are the mainstream technology used in FTTH deployment, below
section describes basic concepts related to the fiber to the home (FTTH) solution from
the user side to the network side on FTTH networking using PON and P2P upstream
transmission, respectively.

FTTH Networking Using PON Upstream Transmission

FTTH Networking Using P2P Upstream Transmission

User Side
Concept
Home Gateway (HGW or HG)

Description
A gateway device positioned for small
office and home office (SOHO) users. It
provides multiple service ports, such as
POTS and LAN, wireless local area
network (WLAN). The HGW supports
routing and remote management and
diagnosis.

Access Side
Concept
PON

ODN

Description
A network that uses the point-to-multipoint (P2MP) network
architecture. A PON network consists of an optical line terminal
(OLT), an optical distribution network (ODN), and optical
network units (ONUs). It uses optical fibers to transmit data,
supports more users with less optical fibers, and provides high
access rates.
A network that consists of optical fibers and passive optical
components, such as one or more optical dividers. The ODN
network provides highly reliable optical paths to connect ONUs to
an OLT.

Optical Line
Terminal(OLT)

An aggregation device located at a central office (CO), which

terminates PON protocols, like Huawei OLT
MA5600T/MA5603T/MA5608T.

Optical
Network
Terminal(ONT)

A user terminal that provides various ports for users. In PON

networking, the PON board of an OLT communicates with an
ONT through the intermediate ODN network. In point-to-point
(P2P) networking, an OLT communicates with an ONT through a
P2P Ethernet optical access board.

Split Ratio

A ratio used for dividing a downstream optical signal into subsignals in the PON system. A greater split ratio will result in a
high optical power for signal transmission over the same physical
distance.

Network Side
Concept
IPTV head end

Description
A contents preparation platform in the
IPTV system. It receives signals, converts
media formats, and manages media
materials.

FTTx
Fiber to the x (FTTX) is a generic term for any broadband network architecture using
optical fiber to provide all or part of the local loop used for last mile
telecommunications. The term is a generalization for several configurations of fiber
deployment, ranging from FTTN (fiber to the neighborhood/node) to FTTD (fiber to
the desktop).

FTTP
Fiber-to-the-premises, this term is used either as a blanket term for both FTTH and
FTTB, or where the fiber network includes both homes and small businesses.

FTTB
Fiber-to-the-building, -business, or -basement, fiber reaches the boundary of the
building, such as the basement in a multi-dwelling unit, with the final connection to
the individual living space being made via alternative means, similar to the curb or
pole technologies.

FTTN

Fiber-to-the-node, -neighborhood, fiber is terminated in a street cabinet, possibly

miles away from the customer premises, with the final connections being copper.
FTTN is often an interim step toward full FTTH and is typically used to deliver
'advanced' triple-play telecommunications services.

FTTC
Fiber-to-the-curb/kerb, -closet, or -cabinet, this is very similar to FTTN, but the street
cabinet or pole is closer to the user's premises, typically within 1,000 feet (300 m),
within range for high-bandwidth copper technologies such as wired ethernet or IEEE
1901 power line networking and wireless Wi-Fi technology.

FTTD
Fiber-to-the-desktop, fiber connection is installed from the main computer room to a
terminal or fiber media converter near the user's desk.
