elcome to the issue 0 of the Against

Magazine, and what a great issue it will
be! Commending my own magazine in
such way may be a little suspicious but it
is true that I could not be more thrilled to
open this publication with a band like WATAIN in the cover. It
is certain that we are not the first nor will we be the last (our
colleagues at Iron Fist have also done it and certainly were
as euphoric as I am), specially at this time, when the icons
of modern Black Metal are promoting their fifth full-length,
The Wild Hunt.
The Wild Hunt, released in the hot month of August (it
must be snowing in some place in the world with ice cold
weather, so it does not lose points for that), will be the first
record of the Swedish band to be released by the German
Century Media Records, their new home after leaving the
French Season Of Mist along the way.
The leader Erik Danielsson allowed us to enter in his own
world for a few minutes so we could get to know better
what is to come.
We will be back in 4 weeks with more news and I hope I can
count on you to read them!

SCYTHE ANNOUNCE RELEASE DATE FOR NEW ALBUM,

TO TOUR WITH JAPANESE SABBAT

MAMIFFER & CIRCLE SET RELEASE DATE FOR

COLLABORATION ON EKTRO/SIGE

Finnish PRIMITIVE REACTION RECORDS announced September

11th as the international release date for SCYTHEs Subterranean
Steel. Following the release of Subterranean Steel, SCYTHE
will be touring in direct support for Japans legendary Sabbat on
their first full-scale North American tour.

EKTRO RECORDS and SIGE RECORDS announced October 15th as

the release date for the highly anticipated collaboration between
MAMIFFER and CIRCLE, entitled Enharmonic Intervals (for Paschen Organ). The record is the first in a proposed series of joint
efforts between the two groups, and will be released on CD by
EKTRO and on vinyl LP by SIGE.

Forged out of the ashes of the legendary Chicago band Usurper,

SCYTHE was spawned in 2009 to expand upon Usurpers legacy of
headbanging, fistbanging, underground metal anthems. SCYTHEs
metal assault incorporates the style of 80s thrash/black/speed
metal, combined with elements of classic heavy metal and heavy
rock n roll to create an original sound that follows no modern
trends. http://www.scythe.us | http://www.facebook.com/scythe.chicago

Recorded over a single day at Keski-Porin Kirkko, the nineteenthcentury stone church in the heart of Circles hometown, the basic
tracks for Enharmonic Intervals exude divine inspiration. Caressed
by Faith Coloccia, Aaron Turner, Jussi Lehtisalo, and Mika Rtt,
the house of worships immense Paschen organ sets a liturgical,
contemplative mood, which persists unabated through a cycle of
improvisations and short compositions. http://www.ektrorecords.com

CRONIAN ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUMS TITLE

AND RELEASE DATE

NEW SINGLE FROM THIRD SOLO LP BY

EX-MELVINS/CLOWN ALLEY GUITARIST

Scandinavian progressive unit CRONIAN, the brainchild of Norwegian black metal masterminds ystein G. Brun (BORKNAGAR)
and Vintersorg (VINTERSORG, BORKNAGAR), has revealed details
about their forthcoming new record. The new album, the bands
third, is titled Erathems, and will hit the stores on November
8th via the Season of Mist Underground Activists division.

The first single from ex-Melvins/Clown Alley guitarist MARK

DEUTROMs third solo album, Brief Sensuality and Western Violence, has been released preceding the LPs release. Rolling with
nearly five and a half minutes of fuzz-laden wandering riffs, the
vividly visual lyrics in Sky Full Of Witches may at first instigate
acid-trip Halloween tales, yet the true story being told here is one
much more ominous and fully grounded in our present day of
technological overexpansion.

We have just finished up the third album and I dont even slightly
blush when arguing out loud that it is the very pinnacle of my fairly
long musical career. ystein comments. I am pretty sure this
album will blow the socks off of all those who liked our previous releases, as well as fans of BORKNAGAR, VINTERSORG and likewise.

TAD MOROSE RECORD AND PUBLISHING DEAL WITH

DESPOTZ RECORDS; NEW ALBUM REVENANT IN NOVEMBER

REVAMP
WILD CARD OUT NOW!

Despotz Records has announced the signing of Swedish progressive/power metal veterans TAD MOROSE. After a 10-year hiatus,
TAD MOROSE will release its seventh album, Revenant, this
November. The CD is being recorded at Claustrophobic Studio in
Gvle, Sweden.

The second album of REVAMP is finally out! In the few years of

REVAMPs young existence the band endured many challenges
and unexpected circumstances but REVAMP came out stronger:

TAD MOROSE is a band that Ive followed since my teenage days,

said Despotz founder mer Akay. They have their unique sound of
melodic power metal and a touch of prog metal.
TAD MOROSE debuted back in 1993 with the album Leaving The
Past Alive and has since released five LPs and toured all around
the world.

Never before in my career I faced a situation like the one we were

in with this album. It was a huge challenge because of several
reasons. Floor comments. My sickness caused a major break
between the first album and tours plus the writing of the first ideas
for the second album and the actual finalization of those songs and
the album. And right at the moment we started to pick everything
back up after I was sick I joined NIGHTWISH. Like a winter and a
summer storm, they bring unexpected things, some nasty ones and
some amazingly wonderful!

KONGH TO RE-RELEASE
COUNTING HEARTBEATS

IHSAHNS DAS SEELENBRECHEN SET FOR

OCTOBER RELEASE

Swedens premiere doomsters KONGH will re-release their critically acclaimed, grammy-nominated in homeland debut album
Counting Heartbeats. The album, containing over 50 minutes of
additional playing time in comparison with the original version,
is set to be released on the 24th of September worldwide via
Agonia Records.

Candlelight Records today confirms October 22 as the North

American release date for Das Seelenbrechen, the fifth solo
album from IHSAHN. Das Seelenbrechen will be available on
compact disc, a limited edition digibook (with expanded graphics and liner notes), and double 180-gram clear vinyl. Pre-orders
are set to launch via online and physical retail outlets beginning
September 10.

The re-released Counting Heartbeats will feature two bonuses,

never released on CD before: the split LP with Ocean Chief and the
demo 2006 - bands first ever recording.
http://youtu.be/E7HJULHbXOA

Musically, this album is a very deliberate sidestep to what I have

been doing; a necessity to reset the creative parameters so not to
fall into formula, shares IHSAHN. I think I do my best work slightly
outside of my comfort zone and Ive wanted to do something like
this for a long time.

LOCRIAN AND TRUE WIDOW CONFIRMED FOR

ROADBURN FESTIVAL 2014

KILL DIVISION LAUNCH LANDING PAGE WITH DEBUT SINGLE,

ALBUM COVER AND PRE-ORDERS FOR DESTRUCTIVE FORCE

Roadburn have announced Locrian will be enshrouding the 2014

festival in their blackened pall. Playing what will be their very
first show on European soil, the grim Chicago post-industrialists
will be bringing their nebulous drones, uncomfortable ambience
and buried black-metallic shrieks to Roadburn at Het Patronaat in
Tilburg, The Netherlands on Thursday April 10th.

Dutch Death/Thrash metal brigade KILL DIVISION has released the

first single from their debut album Destructive Force, out October
11th/14th in Europe/UK via Metal Blade Records.

Premiere song off the release is available for playback at:

With the addition of percussionist Steven Hess for 2010s wellreceived The Crystal World the sonic palette of the band has
expanded, leading to the significantly more rhythmic, terrifyingly
bright spaciousness of Locrians latest release, and first original
full-length recording Return To Annihilation, which came out on
Relapse Records in June this year.

The first single, Locked Up Forever, was written by Susan Gerl,

who penned the lyrics for the entire record. The song was written
about Natascha Kampusch, an Austrian woman who was held prisoner and tormented in a cellar for over eight years. The story made
headlines in 2006 worldwide. Fans can hear Locked Up Forever
now at http://metalblade.com/killdivision
Destructive Force was recorded at Toneshed studio and mixed
and mastered at Andy Classens Stage One studio with hammer,
care and kerosine.

s everything ok?
Hmmmm, yeah, I guess. The album is
coming out tomorrow on Sweden, so
I have a lot of things going on at the
same time.

Do you feel tired of making all this interviews and promotional campaigns for
this new album?
I dont know. I like to talk about Watain,
you know? I like to talk about the album.
You were present at the listening parties for the new album. How was that
experience for you and how do you see
this kind of relation between media and
Watains music?
Its always a little strange, you know? I
mean, we come from a very small world.
We live in our own world with Watain and
that world has very high walls around it.
But its been good, I guess.
And what do you feel when you see

Watain featured in a magazine cover?

Does this have any meaning for you?
I think it has more meaning for our label
and our management than it has to us,
to be honest (laughs). I remember when
I was still young and I picked up cool
Metal magazines with Venom on the
cover or Metallica, whatever. Of course
it meant a lot to them but now I dont
know. I live in the Watain world and that
world is very different from the regular
world. Its hard to say but of course its
cool to see.
The first song I got to hear from The
Wild Hunt was, obviously, the single
All That May Bleed. Why this song for
the first single?
I think because we wanted to send out
a warning to the people. A warning that
something very very very bad was going
to happen to everyone very soon and All
that May Bleed is sort of a declaration
of war.

And where do you find inspiration to

write such powerful and purposeful lyrics?
I always write. Almost everyday on tour I
write something. It can be anything from
lyrics to short novels, whatever. With
Watain lyrics its always strange because
theres always that feeling of even if its
me writing them theres also something
else present at the same time. Something
that is bigger than myself, something that
is hard to describe. I really appreciate
when people read it because I think to really get the whole Watain experience you
also have to take part of the lyrics as well,
I think thats really important.
Does your religion or spiritual beliefs
plays a role in your way to create both
music and lyrics?
Well, Watain is based upon those things.
Thats the reason why Watain exists in
the first place. The lyrics and the music
reflects our way of viewing the world

and our experience of religion and the

divine. Its always been the case of
everything we have done with Watain.
Watain is first and foremost a band
based on satanic energy and satanic
principles and its very important for
people to know that.
What caught my attention as soon
as Ive started to listen to this new
record was the 80s production, which
is, in my opinion, very intrinsic. And
then, as we move further, we get to
see a different musical approach.
Something more introspective, with
beautiful instrumentals. Do you still
consider yourselves as a Black Metal
band or something that evolved from
that?
Watain will always be a Black Metal
band because of our satanic foundation, as were based in satanic elements and were expressing satanic
energy to our work and I think any
band who does that and plays metal of
any kind is a Black Metal band.
I expected big things from this record,
as it would be hard to excel the great
work you have done with Lawless
Darkness, but I think you did it and
this will probably be the album of the
year for some! How did you set the
mood for this record?
Thank you, by the way. We were in a

very strange situation when we started

working on this record. We had been
touring for Lawless Darkness for
almost 3 years and we found ourselves
in a situation where we were all very
exhausted from this long trip that LD
had brought us on but at the same
time we really wanted to start working
on the album. We had a lot of things
against us when we started to work on
this album. There is a lot of pain and
suffering on this album and it reminds
me a little bit of the biblical Jesus,
when he was on his way to cruxificion
in order to reach the divine. That was
like having a heavy cross on your neck,
you know? That was a bit the mood
when we were writing The Wild
Hunt. It involved a lot of intense periods of heavyness and suffering, really.
But at the same time we have always
backed up to that fire that followed us
to the heart of this band. Thats why I
think it become a special album.
Being The Wild Hunt your fifth
full-length release, would you say this
was the right time to try something
different?
I think its always the right time to try
something different if you feel like it.
But for us its never been in the sense
of like Ok, lets try something different!, you know? Its more about
listening to your heart, listening to

yourself and the voices in your head.

If what you get out from that is a new
musical experiment or something
really different so be it. The idea
with Watain has always been to be
completely free, without limits and
borders. Thats one of the basic Satanic
ideas. Thats what happened with The
Wild Hunt. Its music that is written
without any limitation, without any
consideration on what people might
expect from us.
What role does The Wild Hunt plays
on your career? I mean, How do you
describe this release taking into account all the previous releases and all
the work you have done for Watain?
This started out when we were young
with a few simple tools and we started
to build a basic structure, and the older you get, the better you get at using
your tools, the bigger and the greater
the structure becomes. For us its
always been a matter of building this
great, fantastic, temple for our Gods
and for ourselves to be able to always
be a part of this world and to shut the
rest of the world out. The Wild Hunt
in a way is just another step in that direction. Its another level, so to speak,
in our way of building our temple. Its
been always a goal like that as far I am
concerned. I would never really change
the approach I have to an album.

Do you believe you will survive as a band

for 15 more years or will Watain eventually come to an end?
Its impossible to answer that question because for Watain we are working very very
destructive things. We are working with the
death around the corner all the time. To
me, maybe this band lasts one more day or
maybe it lasts 14 more years. Its impossible to say and thats also the beauty of it
as you never know what to expect from a
band like this or even more so, for being in
a band like this. Its always a matter of life
and death, a matter of here and now. Thats
also why I think Watain has become something very explosive and big, its because
were all about here and now and we put
all our fire and energy to this very moment.

your individual characteristics are. I hope

for Watain to be a kind of glimpse into the
darkside of reality for people. I want it to
be if you picture like a white room with a
white table and a white chair and you think
of that as a form of life, then Watain is a
big black ball on the table filled with smoke
and very disturbing things.

Do you have a favourite song in this

album, or at least, a song you believe it
summarizes the whole album?
To me the title track is a kind of center of
the album, so to say. It has all the ingredients of the album because it has a very
dark kind of vibe and at the same time its
also filled with something very beautiful
and its symbol of sorrow, triumph and
victory. Its very strong and important and
it works well as the center of the album for
me.

About your live shows, and like youve

said, youve created a world of your own
both inside and outside the stage. Do you
intend to maintain this stage show or, like
you did with this new record, evolve to a
different level?
Its always about evolving. Its always
been a matter of making things even more
important and more powerful. Its the way
this band has always worked. In the sense
of the live shows, its not something that
we really worked hard on. Its something
that happened a bit more by itself and I just
hope that that continue to happen like that.

In which ways do you think your music affects other people?

Its impossible to say. It depends on what

And most importantly, how does your

music affects yourself?
My music is myself. Its the same thing for
me. Its a very direct translation of who
I am and what life means to me. I really
dont want to make any distinguishment
between those two things, I mean, to me
the music is a direct reflection of who we
are.

ow that you heard the final result of this album,

would you say Surgical Steel met your expectations?
Yes, I think so. I am not disappointed. Have you
heard the album?
Yes, I heard it a few days ago. I found it very good, almost
like a return to your roots, to the old Carcass days.
Yeah, I mean, that was the intention. Did it meet my expectations? To be honest, in the rehearsal room, when we were
recording the rehearsals and made rough demos, they met
my expectations. So, even if we hadnt developed the making
of the album I would be happy. So you heard what we were
doing in the rehearsal room, anyway.
Speaking of expectations, I believe the fans will have big expectations for this record. Have you received any feedback
from the fans and the press as well?
Yes and its overwhelmingly positive! The only negative stuff
Im hearing is from fans of maybe Sickness or Reek Of
Putrefaction, you know? Some people genuinely believed
we were going to record an album that was rough and ready
as those albums.
We dont get to see many guitar leads nowadays in the
modern metal bands. How important are guitar leads for
Carcass musical structure?
Well, The Master Butchers Apron is one song on the album
that doesnt have any leads on it because it werent necessary so we cant throw lead guitar into the mix just for the
sake of it. I mean, lead guitar is important because its always
been around since the blues. I mean, its the foundation of
Heavy Metal. Heavy metal is about the guitar. As I was saying,
Im not saying its taking a risk or doing anything daring for
having a song without a lead on it, but the reality is, the one
song in the album, The Master Butchers Apron, there was
no room for a lead. We could have add some in there, or
maybe write another riff or something, but the song didnt
needed, so when necessary we will have leads and when not
necessary we wont bother. But, you know... Have you seen
that film, Some Kind of Monster, the Metallica movie?
Yes, I did. Actually I was thinking about that example.
Yeah, you got Kirk Hammett, trying to argue that he needs
leads on it because its gonna take the music... Yeah, that
was a really dumb philosophy. I mean, its the way you were
discussing it on which the modern metal is, in some ways,
anti-guitar. Most modern metal is anti-guitar because its not
even roughed, its just rhytmical patterns on the guitar with
those kind of breakdown riffs (reproduces the sound with his
mouth), thats what modern metal seems to be. And well,
our album is not like that, our album is full of riffs.
Now that youve mentioned Metallica, do you believe St.
Anger would sound better with leads?
No, it is what it is. I enjoyed the album for what it is. I dont
think its missing guitar leads but you will never know. You
never heard it! Thats the way the band wanted to go and its
fine. In a way they dated that album for not having leads on
it.
I enjoyed that album for what it was but it was like listening
to a different band. I missed the Metallica feeling but this
happens a lot. Every band wants to try different things.
Metallica had always been leaders in their field but with

that album, in a way, they were trying to

absorb and follow all the bands within
around them, its what I think. They were
no longer leading, they were following.
For someone like you, who is musically
active since the mid 80s, what do you
think about the evolution of the metal
scene and what role does Carcass play
on it?
Part of the reason we have made this
album and all we can justify is maybe
we feel this void and this album will fill
a hole, you know? Theres some good
stuff out there but honestly, if I was 16
or 17 I dont think I would be interested
in whats going on with metal, in the moment. I would be interested in the bands I
enjoyed when I was young. I dont think I
would be a fan of whats happening since
the mid 90s. For me the heydays were the
80s and yearly 90s. I dont know if thats
nostalgia or what but music goes around
in circles and the circular pattern has got
smaller and smaller. The circle is getting
completed much quicker than it used to
be. If were talking on what the kids are
into to its more about fashion than the
music. Heavy Metal is meant to be music
for outsiders, its not music for the beautiful people.
What have you been listening?
Im actually more interested in checking bands that I have missed when I was
younger because theres a vast library
of fantastic music from the 70s and 80s
that I probably missed out because of my
snobby attitude and because of the bands
I was into. So, you know, Classic Rock,
Punk, Hardcore, thats where my heart
is. The new Carcass album is influenced
by Extreme Death Metal, its just stuff we
enjoyed back in the late 80s. Its not a
result of us checking out what bands are
doing now because, you know, wed be
listening bands that were influenced by
us and we can influence ourselves in that
respect (laughs).
What was the experience of recording
a new Carcass album 18 years after the
release of Swansong?
It started off being a lot of fun but as
it dragged on and on it started to turn
into a bit of a drag, to be honest. It was
really fun when we started recording it
but it started to take so long, the whole
mess with trying to get it mixed, it kind
of casted a negative shadow to a certain
extent.
Really?
Yeah, because we were ready to have
this album mixed in January of this year

and due to circumstances outside of our

control it was delayed to April, so its a
lot of fucking time wasted. But we had no
deadline anyway so that was part of the
problem. But its been positive and turned
out for the best.
What are the main differences between
working with this new line-up and the
line-up from the old days?
Not many, to be honest, because the work
is the same as its always been. Bill would
go in and track the guitars with the drums
and once we would get the drums tracked
wed build up all the rhythms and the vocals, the leads, etc. Its basically the usual,
even with the writing process.
Its the same formula...
Yeah, yeah, I mean, there isnt a formula,
specially when it comes to writing. All I
can say is that we went into the rehearsal
room with the drummer and lead guitars
and we wrote this album as we should,
you know? A band with riffs, jamming on
them. Theres a lot of music nowadays
that is written in bedrooms with a drum
machine and a laptop and then they go in
the studio... Colin Richardson (producer)
was telling me about bands that... the
guitarists, the first time they played the
guitar was in the studio because they had
everything mapped out on the laptop
when they go in and this album is the
complete antiphasis of that mentality.
Theres no click track, no sequencing. We
tried to make it as organic as we could
given that it was done on digital.
Do you believe those kind of bands lose
the Metal sound and the essence of what
Metal should be?
Theres a lot of lazyness in the studio. I
could tell you a lot of stories that Colin
and the enginneer told us about some of
the artists they work with. Were talking
about musicians and singers who have
recorded albums and released music and
they dont even know that in the studio
they were replaced by somebody else. Its
almost like were going back to when the
producers, at the end of the day, if they
think the performer of the band is not
good enough theyll call someone else to
do it and most modern music seems to be
made that way. The digital technology allows you to cheat. The recording process
is just a glorifying computer game.
Once you had started to idealize this new
record did it ever crossed your mind that
you would be recording it without Ken
Owen?
Obviously, at the start, that was on our
mind but what can I say? Its not some-

thing we were obsessed with. We just got

on with the basis of writing new music.
Ken is irreplaceable but Daniel (Wilding)
has done a great job and also brought
something new to the band as well. We
were constantly discussing the old days
in the studio and we were always talking
about Ken. We got Ken into the studio in
order to do backing vocals so I dont want
people to think that we forgot the guy,
because we havent, but life goes on. I
mean, Kens life has continued and mine
and Bills life, as well as the band, has
to continue as well. You know, Bill went
to see Ken and this was quite difficult
because it was hard to judge what reaction he was gonna get but he went to see
Ken and obviously said to him Look Ken,
we wrote some new material and were
going to record a new album. And you
know what Kens response was? Rather
than breaking down in tears he just said
I thought you would have done this earlier. I think this shows you the character
of the guy, right?
This album has excellent riffs that takes
us back to Carcass old days. Whats the
meaning of this release not only in your
discography but in your musical career
as well?
Theres no pressure on us to do anything,
but we are as anxious as anyone else not
to shit on our legacy. Weve not been given a large amount of money of a record
label to make an album and to that extent
we dont care. But we do fucking care!
We want to proove to our critics that... we
wanted this album to be a punch in the
fucking face. We want to impress people. You get to our age and you could be
misguided, you could be out of touch with
whats going on or what people wants.
We enjoyed, when we were younger,
when we were into the Extreme Death
Metal, Hardcore, NWOBHM and Classic
Rock. We know what we like, you know?
So, hmm... I forgot what the question is
(laughs) No! So, we just did the best we
could and were trying to top whoever is
our best album and I dont know what it is
because I could never answer that to you.
Were trying to make a better album, the
best album. Thats all you can do and that
should be any bands ambition. I personally dont think Carcass has ever peaked.
We have never had a Raining Blood
career. If you look at Slayers career no
ones gonna argue that their best album is
not Raining Blood, you know? But with
Carcass we dont have that classic album,
so were still searching for it.
Like you have said, you cant say what is
the best Carcass album. But is there any

album you consider to be the strongest?

No because all of the 5 studio albums are
so different. You really cant put Reek
of Putrefaction next to Swansong
because they sound like two completely
different bands. And the same goes with
Heartwork, Necroticism... There are
people who genuinely love Reek of
Putrefaction and think that everything
we did after that was shit. There are
people that think our career ended with
Symphonies of Sickness. Theres a lot of
people that think our career ended with
Necroticism and fucking hate Heartwork with all passion. Then, of course,
there are people who love Heartwork
and hate Swansong and thats great! I
mean, its great to have a back catalogue
that can provoke those kind of responses.
Isnt that better than having 5 albums
that sound so similar that people cant
tell which album is which? And hopefully
Surgical Steel is an extension of that
even further, this is another album that
stands side by side with the other 5 but
still sounds different enough to have its
own identity.
Tell me about the artwork and the
release title as well. Whats the meaning
of it?
Well, its a perfect graphic that sums up
with the title. The album cover is 100%
surgical steel. Its surgical steel tools on

a sheet of stainless steel (laughs). That

circular design is something we have used
since around the time of Necroticism so
it was important to have an iconic image
that when people see will know immediatly its Carcass. At the same time ties
in with the past. I definitely wanted to
evoke the feelings of Necroticism and
Heartwork. This isnt about nostalgia for
it is about our sense of history. Its about
knowing our place in our lineage. Were
definitely trying to take people back to
the old days.
In the past - and Im not sure if you still
are or not - you used to be a vegan, right?
I was a vegan when I was a teenager.
I dont eat meat now, I mean, I hate
describing me as a vegetarian because
I really dont like extremists, you know?
But if someone asks me what my diet is, I
dont eat meat and I dont eat fish.
How much did this influenced your music
and lyrics? Because for someone familiar
with your early lyrics this would come as
a big surprise!
I really think it hasnt influenced the
music but lirically it has a lot of humor in
it. At the end of the day, your lifestyle is
based on killing creatures so singing some
horrible words is pretty harmless when
compared to your lifestyle. Thats my philosophy, thats the way I look to it.

Tell me about your plans for the future!

There are no plans. Thats the beauty of
Carcass. As our ex-guitarist would say,
were not very professional! (laughs).
Were busy till the end of the year. Weve
got a week in the States, were gonna go
to Japan then we go a month in the road
to support Amon Amarth in Europe and
then, next year, we have to tour America
properly, Australia... whatever comes
along and is fun and interesting. Thats
what keeps us motivated.
Sure, everyday is a new day, right?
Exactly! Were fortunate enough that
we make a living from this. Weve never
formed this band to have a career. The
fact that were here, 27 years later, and I
dont have to work on a shitty job is... To
give you an example, this album, we paid
for it ourselves before we got the record
deal. That might seem like a gamble but
its not, because even if no label was interested in releasing it - which would have
been an impossibility, lets face it. Even
if it was garbage someone would give us
money for it - all we had to do is put it on
ebay, sell 1.000 copies and we would get
our money back. This album is an artistic
statement. Its not something to fulfill a
recording contract. We did this to proove
something.

ou have not only created something different

from what you had done in the past but you
have created something really different from
what we get to listen nowadays. Since you all
play in other bands, what was the reason to
create DESTROYERS OF ALL and what is the
philosophy for what you are doing with this
project?
Hello! It all began in 2011, all of us wanted to create something
new and inspiring. With this idea we started to jam and create something which could be a mixture of distinct styles, due
to the vast and diverse musical influences that each one of us
has. All the members were very serious about it, right from the
beginning, so there was no tolerance for the Lets play the
garage-band game! attitude. In this band we are open-minded
when it comes to writing music, so when we start composing
a new song, no one has any idea of how it will turn out, and I
think thats a good thing because we dont really feel pressure to
follow a restrict and specific music style. And every time we do
it, we try to be perfectionists. Like the famous Fernando Pessoa
heteronym Ricardo Reis once wrote: Be whole in everything.
Put all you are into the smallest thing you do.
Since the bands line-up features members from other bands,
should we see DESTROYERS OF ALL as a main project or a side
project?
Destroyers Of All is a serious full-time project, which all of us
manage to combine with our other bands: Tales For The Unspoken, Antichthon, Strikeback... etc. It has its own identity and is
not to be considered as a side or temporary project.
One would say you have mixed all these genres to please everyone but I believe theres a stronger and honest reason to do
that, otherwise the EP wouldnt sound so strong! How much
time did you needed to finally say Thats it! We have found
our sound!? And what drove you to create this sonority?
The main reason our sound is so diverse is basically because
all of us have totally different musical influences and tastes.
And when we created this band we were aware of that, but
we looked at it as a positive challenge, and at the same time a
good thing. Of course its risky, but hey, you gotta take risks in
life. During the composing process all of us were working for
a final result which was unknown to the members of the band
themselves. If you ask me how does the new song sound like,
I will say I dont know because we havent finished yet. Our
songs structures are bizarre sometimes, but one thing that we
do not want to do is boring monotonous music, so thats why
its so energetic and here and there, schizophrenic. What led to
such diverse sonority is the group effort of fusing all the charac-

teristics all of us like in Heavy Metal, in an intelligent way. Any

Black Metal sounding part and dissonant riffs, is influence of our
drummer, Filipe. The neck-breaking Thrashy parts are Guilherme
and Joos mark, Technical Death Metal bass lines are all by
Bruno, and Alex makes his wicked solos and helps add a little bit
of melody like the Hard Rock parts that you can find in the song
M4, just to name an example.
And do you believe youll stay true to this sound in future
releases or theres always room to evolve?
The line-up is strong, open minded to other musical influences,
so I guess we will always have our own musical identity, you
know... The Destroyers Of All sound that hopefully you can recognize when you listen to a song that you dont know its ours
yet. You mentioned the word evolve. I say yes, but in a technical point of view, pushing ourselves over our limits is something
that makes you become a better musician and performer.
Into The Fire was released in May. What has the feedback
been like so far and what are you trying to achieve when it
comes to reviews?
The feedback has been incredibly positive! We didnt know what
to expect, and so far it has exceeded any expectations that we
could have in our minds. People approach and write to us, writing good and positive remarks about what were doing here, so
it makes us very happy and only makes us want to compose and
release more music. Press reviews are important, because they
help to spread our name. And thats exactly what we are trying,
to spread our music and the name Destroyers Of All as far as we
can. We invite people to write reviews.
How do you feel about your place within the Portuguese metal
scene?
We are a recent band, so its completely normal that people
dont know us yet, but were trying to spread our shadow over
the countrys head. With the help of the people who like and
support us, we will have our place in the list of bands that
people want to see live and listen to the new releases. Not a
band which people dont really pay attention to.
I know the reason why, but for those who will not be convinced by our words, tell them why Into the Fire is a record
being worth to be listened
Because it has tons of energy, heavy riffs, catchy melodies,
wicked and insane solos, pounding and frantic drumming, a
technical bass that you can actually hear, and because our songs
are like roller coasters, sometimes journey-like structured. Its
definitely not boring, at least for us and all the reviewers who
have wrote about us.

ongratulations on your new release! For someone

who has released more than 50 albums in the past,
what is the feeling on this new one?
None. When the music has been released, the music
already left from me; the music became to what
should be shared by people.
And since you have so many releases out there, do you describe yourself as a busy person for creating so much music or
all this comes in a pure and natural way for you?
I always say I have never composed any music because there is
music from my cosmos already around everywhere, like shortwaves of the radio programs. I wanna be the good radio tuner
for people. People can listen to some music via my hands, so I
can play and record more and more music all the time. Its not a
special thing, its really normal. Ill make more albums until the
day I wont be able to catch the music from
my cosmos.

Whats the philosophy behind AMT music?

Do whatever you want, Dont do whatever you dont want.
Regarding Doobie Wonderland, how do you describe this
release when compared with your previous records?
Its nothing special for me. Because I just got this music from my
cosmos, the same way as all of my past works. Plus, Pika gave us
her cosmic power too. Even these words, Doobie Wonderland,
suddenly I got these words and that melody both at the same
time from my cosmos.
Do you think the modern audience is ready for this kind of
music or is Doobie Wonderland aimed for the fans from the
old days?
It doesnt matter! If someone find and like our music, its fine. I
believe music can reach to people who need this music at least
in that day.
In your opinion, and since youre related to this Psychedelic
and Classic Rock style, is there any difference for you on releasing a record in CD and vinyl format?

Im maybe
some kind of
anachronism
so I dont prefer
change. But it doesnt
matter for music. I think there
are only two kinds of music in this
world: one is good and the other is bad. I
dont care about new or old. I dont care if its released on
CD or LP. I just think if people prefer LP to CD we should release
on LP too. We need to supply peoples demand. As for me, I
have only bought vinyl because I like vinyl, thats all.
What do you listen in your private time? And how often do you
listen to your own records?
Usually I listen to the natural sound from my mountain, sound of
bamboo forest, chirping by

birds and insects, sounds

of rain, wind, thunder, and my favorite
sound is the sound of full moon, like crazy ringing! Regarding
music, I mostly listen to folk and traditional music, ancient music
as well, especially European, North American, Middle Eastern
etc. Also soundtracks of my favorite films too. I like to listen to
beautiful music, whereas I dont like to listen to percussive
and loud music. I dont listen to my music after releasing it
because I already listened many times when I mixed it.
Whats next for Acid Mothers Temple?
No idea, because I may die just after typing this sentence!

/10 Here is an album that will

WATAIN
The Wild Hunt [CD]
Century Media

raise some discussion between the fans, not only of WATAIN but
also of the black metal in general. Not
because The Wild Hunt is an album
of dubious quality, it is not. In fact, and
of course this is nothing more than the
reviewers humble opinion, The Wild
Hunt is one of the best albums released
in 2013 and I do not state it is the best
only because that would be unwise and
unfair for other bands, deserving our
respect and attention, that will put to
the test this statement of mine. This new
record, the fifth full-length in the bands
discography, marks a new stage in the
career of WATAIN. There is always a lot

to be said about the word evolution, yet

all that we can listen to in this album is
the result of an evolutionary path, of a
victorious march that is far from having
an end. Despite all this, I consider The
Wild Hunt was a risky release for the
fact that it shows changes that, for the
more skeptic, may raise the doubt if the
true essence of black metal is present and
if WATAIN are not just playing it safe by
risking more commercial compositions,
with clean vocals, feminine voice and in
a different approach. However, I am not
a skeptic and do believe that The Wild
Hunt shall be appreciated for what it is: a
black metal masterpiece!
[Joel Costa]

his metal flame, delivering some of his

best riffs ever written in a mixture of old
material with fresh slabs of melodic death
metal guitar precision. However, years
dwelling on other styles brought a new
sensitivity to his playing which resounds
clearly in the masterful mixing of death
metal / grind structures along with tasteful
bluesy solos played upon various melodic
interludes, which end up confiding a sense
of musical variety to most of the material.

CARCASS
Surgical Steel [CD]
Nuclear Blast

/10 Waiting is over. What some

thought unlikely to occur, has

finally happened. British legends Carcass
are back with their sixth album Surgical
Steel.
While not totally innovative by todays
standards, it managed to succeed where
most reunion albums fail, it met all
raised expectations and surpassed them.
After years of playing in other blues/alt
rock driven outlets, Bill Steer rekindled

Jeff Walkers voice remains practically untouched since the 90s and he occasionally
partners up with Steer, marking a return
to the dual vocal approach fans had been
wanting back since the days of Necroticism.
The third element of the recording line-up,
new 24 year-old drummer Dan Wilding
(ex-Aborted), was indeed a most suitable
choice for handling of the sticks, showing
extreme precision and total adaptability
to the new set of songs, but the thing
most fans will be pleased to know is that
he remained faithful to Ken Owens style,
reminding us at times of the patterns
executed by the former drummer who still
managed to collaborate on this album by
doing back-up vocals in a few songs.

In its essence, Steer, Walker and Wilding,

delivered a merger of sorts between the
bands last three albums, inclining mostly
towards the melodic death metal style of
Heartwork while incorporating a few
sections here and there which remind us
of the Necroticism and Swansong eras
throughout some of the songs.
Other than the first single Captive Bolt
Pistol, highlights include Cadaver Pouch
Conveyor System, The Master Butchers
Apron, Noncompliance to ASTM F
899-12 Standard, The Granulating Dark
Satanic Mills and 316 L Grade Surgical
Steel.
Quoting Jeff Walker, Surgical Steel can
be heard as the missing link between
Heartwork and Necroticism, but its
not a nostalgia trip. Its a clear statement
that Carcass are indeed back, and in full
force. On top of that, one must say that
Surgical Steel is a strong candidate to
the Album of the Year title, due to the
serious commitment of these musicians
in producing a really enjoyable album,
which ultimately manifests itself as one of
Carcass best albums.

/10 I am convinced that

Acid Mothers Temple,

in their Cosmic Inferno incarnation, hail not from Japan, but
from a planet where people
smell sounds and eat colours,
where music is sustenance
for a robot-funk fueled progpterodactyl. Its not as silly as it
sounds, but thats what AMT is.
Their Cosmic Inferno formation
is a bit harsher than their previous ones, distorting their guitars to infinity take M. J. Love
666, an expression of pure
raw emotion. However, it is the
opening track that stands out;
it is over 20 minutes long and it
takes us through the eccentric
journey that Do You Remember Doobie Wonderland?
is: an intoxicating, sometimes
unpredictable album.

/10 Who does not

like super
groups? In a panorama so
full with countless individuals
whose talent flows through
their veins at a monstrous
speed, we can not simply say
no to projects like ADRENALINE
MOB and ALL PIGS MUST DIE.
Nothing Violates This Nature
is what we expect to listen
when we have members of
CONVERGE, BLOODHORSE and
THE HOPE CONSPIRACY creating music together: a sound
filled with the most fearful
hatred in a hyperactive register
that captures the thrash/punk
attitude of the past. What we
have is half an hour of pure
consented aggression mixed
with a lot of pessimism.
[Joel Costa]

/10 The fact that the

band was formed in

2005 and is just now releasing their first album makes
ALTARS Australias best kept
secret. Nevertheless, the
path of this trio was not
silent at all. A discography
composed of one demo, two
splits and one single made
possible the creation and
later enlargement of a solid
fan base. Paramnesia is a
great debut where we can
see the best of old-school
death metal and modern death metal. With an
enticing musical structure,
ALTARS brought the power
of riff to Australia and the
world.
[Joel Costa]

Theyre releasing it in October but

actually I got to hear it with Pelle (In
Solitudes vocalist). Its a fantastic
album filled with the danger that this
kind of music has to have. Its
a perfect album to me!

/10 Formed in 2010

and thriving on
a classic doom metal style and
imagery, Finlands Church of
Void manage a nicely balanced
blend of the genres most iconic
inuences. Even though Black
Sabbath and Type O Negative
come to mind more often than
not, the follow up to last years
Winter is Coming EP is a
pleasure to listen to, with its
intense and well executed compositions wrapped in a faultless sound production. Hardly
groundbreaking, Dead Rising
is promising as a debut album
for such a young band, who
basically need some ne tuning
in order to build up a personality of their own.

believe that these newcomers

from the U.S. can easily be
considered one such act. Being
formed about four years ago
and having released two demos
it was time for them to ink a
deal with a label and unleash
upon us their debut self titled
album. Music-wise now theyve
created a really interesting and
highly addictive amalgam of
doom/stoner metal and hard
rock which they infused with
plenty of progressive and with
even some slightly psychedelic
elements. The songs may be
mid paced for the most part
but this doesnt mean they
are boring or tiring rather
the contrary since they have
some really beautiful melodies
and catchy riffs that stick to
your mind. The album is really

inspired and thought out to the

slightest detail and proves that
BEELZEFUZZ have the potential to have a bright future if
given the chance since they are
capable and skilled songwriters
and musicians. Add to all the
above the fact that they have
an extremely talented singer
with a warm, passionate and
beautiful voice and you have
all the necessary ingredients
that guarantee the success of
this endeavour. Their music is
mesmerizing and impressive so
Im sure those of you who are
into the 70s doom metal and
hard rock and adore bands like
BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE,
UFO and the likes will find here
a band worthy of your attention
and support!
[Christine Parastatidou]

/10 The name can

be a novelty
but the members of the North
American band CLERIC certainly
are not. Formed by members
of Kill the Client, Baring Teeth
and Tyrannosorceress, CLERIC
perform a fusion between
old-school death metal and
the typical aggressive temperament of a Texas rattlesnake, as
the band comes from the same
state that was the birthplace of
Pantera. Gratum Inferno, besides having an excellent cover
designed by Jason Barnett,
contains seven visceral hymns,
perfect to fit the soundtrack of
a riot. To give it an even more
special touch the edition will be
made in vinyl, which makes this
Gratum Inferno an album not
to miss!
[Joel Costa]

/10 Whoever breathed

the 90s Metal

surely did not remain
indifferent to bands like
Sepultura and Pantera that
redefined the genre and
were responsible for what
we know today as Groove
Metal. Destroyers Of All did
not go for the traditional
recipe and decided to take
a chance by creating a mixture of Death and Groove,
with a touch of Thrash. All
this resulted in an impressive and solid debut EP. For
a band with quick songs,
sturdy riffs, brutal solos
and a voice with the best
90s Groove, there are no
limits! Big debut!

/10 Creating fresh

music with a personal

touch that at the same time
has a strong tie to the past and
the traditional genres of our
beloved music is something
difficult to achieve and only
a few talented bands manage to pull it off. Personally I

/10 I do not hide that

my opinion about
DevilDriver has been swinging
between good and bad over
time; however, the band lead
by Dez Fajara proved - if there
were still doubts - that the
label of nu-metal does not suit
anymore and that going back to
the roots is out of the question,
showing that Dez Fajara and
company are masters in transforming their own sound and
giving a whole new sense to the
word evolution. More intense
and focused than their previous
releases, Winter Call came to
solidify the bands legacy in the
American metal scene and to
make DevilDrivers future live
performances something that
cannot be missed!
[Joel Costa]

/10 If you are looking

for relaxing
and mental space trips, Lustres
Wonder is the perfect choice.
Listening to Lustre is equal to be
trapped in a magical outer-world
which leads you to hypnotic
soundscapes because of three
minimal keyboard combinations
one of those is similar to the zither
sound. Combined with guitar riffs
functioning as noise and a slow
paced drumming, a sphere of
sound is created being surrounded
by those repetitive and hypnotically keyboard waves. Vocals are
rarely used, because Nachtzeit
needs only the musical part to
spread his message. Some may
find Lustres sound boring if knowing the entire discography the
formula is always the same , but
it works perfectly if you are really
into atmospheric music.

The End Of Devotion EP in
2009 and what seemed to be a
prosperous future turned out
to be an absence until now.
This year of 2013 marks their
return with the full-length
Sinful Twilight. First, I was
in positive shock because My
Deception has finally released
an album, but then I didnt like
the fact that five out of the nine
tracks are already on the 2009
EP. What should be a novelty
became a repetition even if
those old songs have a new
production outfit. The other
songs follow the usual bands
line. The vocals are more refined than before and the cold
guitar riffs are completed with
keyboard nuances..
[Diogo Ferreira]

/10 After a five

years absence, the Swedish band

PEST returns with a new
album. Being recognized as
one of the Swedish black
metal classic bands, this
new album surprises by the
way it approaches its simple compositions, which are
faithful to the true essence
of the genre in a somewhat
thrashy way. Even with a
certain nostalgia coming
from the 80s standing out,
nothing makes this album
as black as expected. Nonetheless, it is an album to
take into consideration if
you have an open mind for
good and pure BlacknRoll
[Joel Costa]

/10 The predecessor For

Winter Fire already

did gave us a hint of the
potential of this north american Doom project, but didnt
prepared us for this Post-Doom
Metal monster, composed
by six lengthy tracks, filling two
CD. Without reinventing the
wheel, the musical approach
of this quartet is built around
the lyric content, exploring the
inner spirituality and mens
relation with the cosmos. As
deep as the theme might seem,
its the incredibly ambitious but
also cohesive soundwriting that
is astonishing. A drone start
sets the tone to emotionally
heavy and hypnotic pieces. Itll
be a journey youll never forget.
[Jos Branco]

/10 TURISAS2013 is an

eclectic experience
where a lot of influences come
together to give you richer
music. The depth of Mathias
Nygards voice has quite an
impact on the listener and creates a certain black melancholic
atmosphere that keeps you
tuned with the words. We apprehend pieces of other genres
in the musical language presented at TURISAS 2013. Some
tracks had moments that could
remind us of Queen, Nick Cave
or even Ute Lemper when she
is in darker songs mood. In this
record youll find folk and jazz,
gypsy punk and a kind of opera
rock, all blended with metal in
a very natural way. It is worth.

is an album full of attitude, a
drumming performed with a
relentless rage while the guitars
are executed in a very pure and
volatile way. To help in the excellent execution of this work,
the vocalist Fredrik Wester
also contributes with courage
through the use of his powerful
and impetuous voice, resulting
in an extreme album whose intensity only ends when the last
notes of Pried From Earth
are played, the last song that,
in farewell, presents us with
violent and bloodthirsty riffs.

/10 It is impossible

not to like music like

this! Soma is the piece that
was missing in my infinite
puzzle. Yes, what I have just
said was really stupid but love
makes us say stupid things and
this album is my new passion!
Soma is the first WINDHANDs album to be released
by their new record label Relapse Records, and the second
in their still short but future
classic discography. With the
guitars creating epic moments
throughout, this record makes
me go back in time to the
essence of bands like Black Sabbath or even Nirvana. It makes
my hair stand on end for being
so frighteningly beautiful!

/10 Fresh from the release of their debut album a year

ago, these upcoming Liverpudlian retro doomsters are

back with a new EP. Immersed in the 70s prog and psychedelic
sounds, the nal result can be described as something like Hawkwind meets Cathedral, although uncannily fresh and compelling.
An awesome and highly recommended surprise.

/10 Ravenous Damnations Dawn is the debut mini-al

bum of the Swedish ENSNARED. Many of you may think

Great...more Swedish death metal..., but the truth is that this
record, whose edition is entrusted to Nuclear Winter Records, is
a real surprise! Is it Swedish death metal? Yes. But with a touch
of 80s blackthrashing that gives it a special taste. Innovative and
diabolic!
